33rd Team Ranks Patriots as #1 Roster Most in Need of Help

An update on my prior post. PFF ranks the Pats WR room as the worst in the NFL. #28th for OL. I don't care for PFF, but it's pulling teeth finding other articles grading stuff like this.

PFF's not alone in their ass-essment of both our OL & WR rooms.

Judon had 4 sacks through 2 1/2 games last year, if he got old... he wasn't showing it. A torn pec can happen to a young man.
32 years old Judon will start this season coming back from a serious injury.

I’m not surprised Monson is part of the site, he’s as big a Pats hater as there is out there. He was one of the guys who claimed Brady was all done, and just a mediocre QB in 2014, and he cried like a little ***** when he got called out on it. He made up his own metric, most could have been interceptions as his data to support the claim. That’s like almost intercepted a pass, but didn’t. He’s a total douchebag.
I believe he was also the guy who tried to defend PFF ranking Brady as the #21 player in the NFL . . . the year he was the first unanimous MVP.

You all seem to think that going from the #32 Offense to say #25 is terrible.

If our Defense stays at #9 that might get us to being the #20 team overall, a major improvement a solid first step A.B.

We would hope to be #15 or so in 2025, competing for the playoffs.

I get caught up in my own optimism sometimes.. I guess I was just looking at it differently, and liked the fact we have a young future star in Drake. But to your point yes, taking the time to build up the team especially the o line is all a process. To clarify my post I was just referring to the team building aspect of roster building and cohesion during training camp. That's all.
I for one truly enjoy reading your optimism.

Yes, there is the reality of just how bad this team was last season. As a fan, I go back far enough to when the team was lousy every year. One of the best things about being a fan is that I can focus more on the positive things about the Patriots and choose to do this rather than focus on the negatives even when I'm aware of them and believe me, I am aware of them. I don't believe this makes me delusional and if it does, I don't give a ****.

As an old dude, there is only one thing I know for sure and that is life is way too short and I realize this more and more everyday. So I really try to take all things, all things including the Patriots one day at a time. IMO, as of right now, and all things considered, the Patriots have a chance to be a better team than last season and I think this is a reasonable expectation. This can be accomplished, one game at a time and I'll have the same guarded optimism for each day and every game that I've had for over 50 years as a fan of this team.

My friend thank you for this. This should give even the most pessimistic fans some reason for optimism. Myself I've been a fan since the 80s as a kid growing up watching the team.. I remember when tippet came to my school on crutches to do his community service. But yes, I'm always an optimistic person. I get that some posters may not always agree, but that's what the forum is about. I believe that we have some parts that permeate to success. For example the guys on defense.. they all have close rela with coach Mayo.. they all want to play for him and make him shine as a HC.. Brady even accolades Mayo as a HC. On offense we have a dynamic backfield with rham and versatile Gibson. Out wide polk & baker give us some young athletes that can go up and get it. Pop, KJ, KB.. we may not have #1s but these guys are coming into the league and have to make a name for themselves.

It feels like our defense gets unfairly judged.

Way too much focused get placed on the offensive shortcomings, that I think evaluators get lazy with their evaluation of our defense.

Our defense needs some respect on thier names.. most teams only have 2 maybe 3 guys on defense that can wreck a game plan we have at least 8. Peppers, Barmore, gonzo, judon, Jennings, Dugger, Bentley, white..

You're very welcome Real fan 02.

I can understand some of the pessimism from some of the fan base and I guess it is what it is. In recent years, watching the Patriots have not been a lot of fun. After the nightmare of watching Cam skipping passes off the turf or missing receivers by 10 yards and Mac "et al" throwing interception after interception, I'm ready for the Patriots to have at least a semi chance of winning a game after getting behind. Ya, I know Brady ain't walking through the door again when no score deficit was too big to overcome. I think we all got a little spoiled by Brady in that regard. But if we're only a few points down, I'm looking forward to just a chance of pulling out a win coming from behind.

I agree with what you said about the current team's make up and while acknowledging a not so good OL, and assuming Maye becomes the starter sooner than later, I think Maye has much more agility to get the F out of the line of fire of a defensive line trying to kill him - unlike Mac who at times just couldn't move fast enough to avoid a sack. And Maye can run with some speed, has a strong arm and can throw with accuracy. Putting this together with an already good defense and an improved Special Teams, (how many block punts, missed field goals and TD's were given up on punt returns last year?) the Pats should be much improved.

Is this wishful thinking on my part? Maybe, but I would much rather have positive thoughts about 2024 than think that they are going to suck worse than last season. Besides, I've never figured out a way to be pissed off and happy at the same time. . .

I think that we have a top 5 to 10 Defense. And I would emphasize re-signing our own and drafting a stud and a solid backup each year. IMO, this would continue us as a top Defense.

Do folks agree or disagree?

I agree...that we're a Lot closer to a top-10 defense than to a top-5 one.

Well I agree. Like you I've been high on the defense the last 2 seasons.. not enough people understand the awful positions they were put in especially last season. These guys are a prideful group and they all play with a tenacity. I'd say becuase the Jets lost some guys on defense we are the best defense in the NFL. I say this because we are stout at every level. No other team can say this.

I'd say closer to top 5... you can't run on them.. you can't throw on them... sounds like top 5 to me

That's a great post my friend. I enjoy reading things like this. Well we have no way but to go up.. we hit rock bottom at the QB position last season. I believe that ownership want to win games while growing Drake and the team under mayo. I believe both is possible. For example take a look a Texans. Had brand new coaching staff, a #2 pick that wasn't even supposed to start. He was projected to sit behind Davis mills! He smoked him in training camp and won the job.. outside of thier left tackle tunsil they didn't have what I'd call a good o line. Ryan's just like mayo , a young ,smart defensive coach.

so many similarities. I'm not saying we are going to the divisional round, but we could be a team in the hunt that no one wants to see.

Why can't they be thrown-on?
Any team can be thown on theoretically.. what I'm. Saying is you aren't going to beat them deep.. if you do Barmore has punished your QB as he's slow getting up..

I completely agree. We get it if you're a "realist", but don't shame others for having hope. None of us know for sure how this season will turn out, and to pretend you do is simply arrogance. I'm sure there were "realists" doing the same thing at this time 23 years ago.

Agreed here. 60 thousand fans show up each week at Gillette during the season becuase they have hope, and optimism that our team will win. Even as bad as it was offensively last season I had a glimmer if hope they would find a way to at least look competitive. I'm looking forward to this season for so many reasons.
