2019 free agents: Who can we get?

Call me crazy, but maybe we could get Jameis Winston to sign a 2 year “prove it” deal to back up Brady, and hopefully succeed him. Just maybe sitting behind Tom would help him mature and revive his career.
I mean, he’s made a pretty good amount of career earnings so far being the number one pick and all, just maybe he doesn’t need that first big contract as much as others. I think it makes a lot of sense on his part.

After all, he is only 24

I'd rather have Mariota than Winston but I think that chance gone.

Not sure if Josh can beat those absolute brainfarts and bad decision making Winston seems to have out of him but if the draft falls badly again and we don't get any QB with potential out of it then Winston is one of the players who'd be at least worth a look in the preseason.

Don't forget about Etling (he said, with a remarkably straight face).

I’m pretty sure if the Bucs don’t retain him, and he hits free agency, he won’t stand a chance making it past the draft. I could be wrong though

You dolts. BB clearly used magic Force powers to screw up Garapollo from a distance. He also whispered the name of mullens in somebody's ear. Jimmy Grapes, bless his soul, will be freed up soon to test the waters, since he'll be judged an injury prone might-have-been...

Until he lands again in New England right about when TFB hits age 44.

Book it.

The idea is to find a successor that actually values taking care of the football.

Getting and evaluating a QB is such a cluster**** situation nowadays with limited practices. You want your QB1 to get the majority of the snaps. Then also have the primary backup get enough so if something happens he at least has some chemistry / experience with the 1s.

Which leaves so little time for QB3s / developmental types to actually get reps. Most of their development is in the filmroom, with the practice squad or during the "opportunity periods" that Lombardi described in his recent book:

“With a good first day under our belt, I join Belichick to watch the last part of practice, the one called the “Opportunity Period,” in which development of our youngest and taxi squad players continues, even this late in the season.”

Point being it is a difficult process unless you have a set successor in house as backup already or even as young starter.

You guys must be eating Tide Pods for breakfast this morning.

I thought I formulated it as diplomatic as possible by saying "at least worth a look". I think he is what he is and will never be careful enough with the ball to be a successful NFL quarterback. But maybe under the guidance of McDaniels and better designed offense he will be able to minimize that.

And unless you we just tank exactly at the right time to get one of those top 5 picks when a great prospect is available or luck out like we did with JG what really is the alternative than just throwing **** at the wall ?

They have 6/100 top picks in the draft. That’s plenty of capital to take 3-4 good players AND move up for a QB prospect, should they choose. Aaron Rodgers went at the end of the first round. Garoppolo went at the end of the second round. Brady went at the end of the sixth round. There have been plenty of decent QBs over the years who weren’t taken with a top 5 pick.

They could also choose to trade for someone with a first or second rounder (or both), go after someone in the next couple of years in free agency, or try and develop a reclamation project. I just think that we rely more on strong cerebral skills for this offense, and that Jameis Winston is probably one of the worst fits out there for our particular system, especially at such an important position.

"In 2021"?? I think Edelman will be on Social Security by 2021.
Funny you should mention this.....facially, Edelman is looking old. After last weeks physical beating, he may have aged even more.
If he wasn't manning NE's slot, he looks like a guy who belongs on a Wicked Tuna rig.....chain smoking, yelling curses across the water at Dirty Dave.

I am not disagreeing with that. That being said I think we both can agree that while you can find value outside the very top echelons of the draft the majority of players with elite potential are taken there.

It is all a matter of probabilities. Who are the top young QBs right now ? Wentz, Watson (~), Mahomes.. maybe Goff ? All taken pretty fast off the board. Wilson, Romo, Brady or even JG are really the exception.

I agree with you that with everything Winston has shown he doesn't really look like a fit to me either. That being said I also don't think the QB position allows itself to be a chooser given where we are. The more we try things with as little financial commitment as possible the better.

Yes, Mcourty is overrated.

Love to find a real elite Safety like a Rodney or Ed Reed. Somebody that plays whistle to whistle.

We could have very easily traded up for Derwin James. Our overall lack of athleticism on defense is alarming. Not being able to tackle Mitch Trubisky is all you need to know.

Flowers and Guy are pretty good. Can build around them. Van Noy is useful. Want to see how Hightower finishes the season

Dante Fowler but might command too much.

Door opens. Danny Etling pokes his head in.

"Hi! We're you guys just talking about me? I thought I heard my name mentioned. No? Okay, then."

Door closes.

For me, the question isn’t whether or not we can get the guy we want. I agree with your statement that we have the capitol. The real question is whether or not we can identify a guy we want.

For me, the even bigger question is, can "we" (the fans) even come close to identifying a QB who "they" (the Pats) actually want.

Honestly, we’d all go one way and they most definitely will go the other. And here we are, back to Jameis Winston in a Pats uniform.

Funny if you really think the pats go after a top FA lol
