2019 free agents: Who can we get?

For me, the even bigger question is, can "we" (the fans) even come close to identifying a QB who "they" (the Pats) actually want.

If JG showed me anything then that the team knows what it wants in a QB. But getting that is not as straight forward because a) the player has to available at a point in the draft where you can get him without sacrificing considerably higher rated players and b) he has to develop according to the projection.

And unlike most positions QB is just so difficult to project because your success at NFL level requires many things that are not obvious from tape. Yes, you should have pretty clean mechanics and whatnot but projecting the ability to read disguises or set protections in a college QB in 2018 is a crapshoot.

And don't get me started on how practice restrictions in the CBA mean that there really is not much time to give your 3rd string QB reps.

Apart from the more obvious cases it really takes a perfect storm of things to find the right QB.

It's informative how far off I was about the 2018 QB prospects who I thought would be attractive enough to the Pats to spend a draft pick if they "fell" within reach. LOL!

Also, though Etling may not ever be an active roster QB for the Pats, the Pats may have had good reason to draft him and keep him as the scout team/PS QB. He was coached at LSU by Matt Canada - the college OC who originally developed many of the plays and schemes that Mahomes is now executing to such great effect in KCY (and Trubisky, now, in Chicago to a lesser degree of success).

How do you think Gilmore got here? The draft?

Some posters think that we are terrible at getting talent the draft. Some think that we are terrible at getting talent in free agency. Some think that we are terrible at keeping talent by re-signing our players. Apparently, if we have any talented players, they got here by some some of magic.

The alternative view is that the talent on the team has been very poor and all the success is due to having Brady and Belichick.

While all this is true, it cannot help the future of the franchise to not even try to develop a quarterback. The team is apparently fine with Hoyer as a backup.

To be clear, I think that it was, is, and will be worth a roster spot (and a bit of cap money) to have a potential backup at QB on the 53 man roster.

At the moment, the developmental QB is apparently Etling. We may not know how the Pats feel about how that's working out until the draft.

I think there is a pretty good chance he will be around at least until shortly before camp starts in 2019. See what kind of jumps he does during OTAs & co and then decide what to do with him.
