They should Start from the Top BB should relinquish or delegate his GM Responsibilities and Nick Caseiro should be reevaluated. I think it's quite obvious they need new Blood in the area of Scouting or player evaluations. They have done a piss poor job there and don't care about where they were Drafting. Other Teams have hit on Third - Fourth and Fifth Rounders in those same Drafts we haven't gotten jack squat!
Who? I assume current GMs are off limits, so you’re picking from guys who either were fired from GM jobs or haven’t been a GM before.

Does it matter?? we need new Blood Period our incumbents blow. I like BB the HC and no doubt know he's the best in the business but BB the GM leaves a lot to be desired with his henchman Caseiro.

If there are so many options out there that would be an improvement, I’m sure you’d be able to give me a few names. This shouldn’t be difficult.

For starters I'm just making a logical suggestion...but I think Bobby Grier or maybe retired Ozzie Newson would do abetter job than both BB and Caseiro in those areas. Of course that's a problem for Jonathan Kraft to figure out.

Right now I’ve been impressed with Kevin Colbert’s drafts in Pittsburgh, Andy Reid’s drafts in KC, and Tom Telesco’s drafts in LA. I think a lot of our poor recent drafts has to do with the late start we’ve gotten 3 out of the past 4 years.

Round 4 Pick 7 (DET): Morgan Jr, Stanley, WR, Nebraska

It would obviously be a great story here in NE. On the positive he runs routes inside, outside, deep short, screen....he's also a strong runner after the catch. On the negative he doesn't seem to have elite speed or quickness and you need one of those unless you're bordering on TE size.

Dan Morgan formerly of the Sea Hawks joined the Buffalo Bills as their director of player personnel. Always been impressed with this Guy under Carrol watch Buffalo in the near future. The point is they are guys out there just gotta do some digging.

It won't take Philly too long to turn it around after this year they just Drafted a real good TE to pair with Zack Ertz.

He’s whiffed on a lot of players using high picks too. The Jordan Richards pick arguably cost us last year’s super bowl.

I think to build a long-term winner the best way is the draft. Get cheap, good players, and then let them go when they hit the free agent market unless they are studs like Brady or Gronk.

I believe that the "best way" to build a long term winner is with a combination of the draft (including UDFA), free agency and trades. It seems to me that this is the way that BB has approached things since he's been with the Pats, but what do I know?

Good post.

Thats an average of .75 Super Bowl appearances per year.
Did you need to take your shoes off to calculate that. Wait, do you own shoes?

I know only 3 sbs in 4 years, heads must roll.

This. Strict possession type but if he can turn into a David Givens clone I’ll take it.

Booby Grier? Did someone just post that the Pats should bring back Booby Grier? The same Booby Grier that WHIFFED on 29 of 31 draft picks after Bedsore's buddies, Rucci and lane signed thsoe ridiculous contracts?

Don't get me started on Booby...it'll be a bloodbath

Yes, of course, but the draft always should be the main focus. You can supplement with good free agent signings and trades.

BPA every round because the roster sucks pretty much all over.

Seems like a solid strategy until it comes time when the pats are on the board and each time they have a position other than DT highest rated.

Poor recent drafts ...

The jury is still out on 2018, IMHO, since 6 of the 9 prospects (with no previous injury history) ended up on IR. Kind of ironic that the one guy who did have an injury history is the one who's still playing). JC Jackson was a UDFA.

2017 - Made only four picks, and traded the rest for players. Of the four, Rivers (3rd round) lost his rookie season to injury and hasn't panned out this year. Garcia (3rd round) succumbed to a previously undiagnosed serious illness (bad luck). Wise (#131) has been a solid rotational DE. McDermott (#211) was claimed off waivers during cutdowns. Adam Butler was a UDFA. Langi was a UDFA (auto accident - who knew THAT was going to happen?).

2016 - Thuney, Roberts, Karras. Had a good rookie year out of Mitchell, and a decent rookie year out of Valentine. Those two, plus Cy Jones, lost their sophomore seasons to injury and never bounced back. Brissett was a backup QB for four games before getting injured. Jon Jones was a UDFA.

2015 - Brown, Flowers, Mason, Cardona. Stork was the starting Center for a year. Richards and Grissom were high-end special-teamers for three seasons. Derby (6th) was flipped to Denver after a year for a future 5th. David Andrews was a UDFA. Brandon King was a UDFA.

2014 - Garoppolo, White. Cam Fleming was a utility/reserve OL for four seasons. Malcolm Butler was a UDFA.

2013 - Collins, Logan Ryan, Harmon. Ryan Allen was a UDFA. Josh Kline was a UDFA.

2012 - Jones, Hightower, Ebner. Wilson was a high-end special-teamer for four seasons (and went on to greater success in DET, before getting injured). Dennard was a decent CB for one season. Bolden was a UDFA.

2011 - Solder, Vereen, Ridley, Cannon. Mallett was the backup QB for a bit. Lee Smith was claimed off waivers during cutdowns. Danny Aiken was a UDFA.

There are lots of ways to acquire a competent run-stopping DT, don't necessarily need to draft one. That's the basic underpinning philosophy to BPA, I think: the Pats need a DT, they need a tackle (which could be addressed by re-signing Brown), they need a DE (could be addressed by re-signing Flowers, they badly need a TE, they need a WR, they probably need a LB, they don't need a safety yet but at some point they'll need to get younger there and we have no idea if Dawson is the guy, they could use another corner because everyone can always use another corner. They could certainly use another guard, with Thuney entering the last year of his deal.

They're not going to fill all of those holes in the draft. Filling them is going to require a combination of draft capital, FA signings, and potentially trades. So if they they see the best WR or TE or DE available as being more likely to be part of the next core than the best DT available, then I'd hate for them to take the DT just because their DTs were so bad this year. If there's no DT who they think is part of the long-term solution when they're on the clock, I'd rather they not draft one at all and plug the gap in FA.
