Borregales can line up in the slot or outside… that doesn’t make it smart.

You can sit Chism and bring up any practice squad backup you wish to fill in special teams.

Why trade a perfectly good WR...arguably our best WR the last 2 seasons for a late round pick? Injuries do happen. I still see Boutte seeing enough snaps even with AJ and Doubs being #1/#2 right now.

The more I see of him, the more I want to keep him. I'd be happy to see the matter dropped, even if that means keeping 7 WR's. I expect AJB to be a one-year player. I hope and suspect he'll be a valuable addition this year, but that will be another year of wear and tear on a player already showing signs of decline and likely to ask for a boatload of cash next year, more than I think the Pats can responsibly pay given his age and the need to sign other, younger players, Drake included.

I have no intention of getting into a pissing contest about this and I respect most people's opinions, but I have yet to hear a compelling argument that having the redundancy that Booty brings makes us a better team than having a WR corp with a diversified skill set.

JMcD is a matchup game plan coordinator. Booty is a contested catch X who is good at the catch point and that's about it. So are AJB and Doubs and Hollins obviously has that element too.

As training camp is showing us, AJB and Doubs are building chemistry with Maye and will be the featured WR in this offense.

Hollins blocking is a key attribute to our run game and he plays special teams.

Pop is our best quick man beating WR who can get separation.

KW has explosive play potential and a speed element and reportedly has the best release package outside of AJB. Yes he's a work in progress but he's under a cheap contract for 3 more seasons.

We have a log jam and other teams know this and Booty is on the last year of deal. A 5 or conditional 4th is all we'll likely get, unfortunately.

STARTING POINT
Brown, Doubs, Hollins, and Williams are on the team and on the active roster every game. As noted, Williams is a returner as well as a 3-5 a game target 4th WR in that group. How often should the 5th WR play? Isn't our starting 3 plus Henry enough? Isn't that the current situation through camp? Even a FIVE-receiver set could include the 4 receivers plus Henry or a RB as the 5th recever.

What roles do others play? How many targets a game should we expect from the rest? Check last year.

For example, If Boutte has the same role as Doubs, why would the team sit Doubs to play Boutte if they have decided that Doubs is a better choice.

Is Douglas a good enough backup in the slot or change of pace for him to be the active 5th for a few targets a game? Could the team be hoping that Douglas will an inexpensive, reliable #5 again in 2027?

And yes, whoever is the 5th WR on the roster is insurance against one of the top 3 getting injured. His reps would greatly increase in that situation.

The 6th schematically? the 6th is at best an inactive player on Game Day, and insurance in case one of the 5 is injured. In that case the 6th becomes the 5th for few snaps that this role gets.

Chism was the 6th in that role. I believe that there was only one game in which he was the 6th active WR. One game had 4 active receivers. The rest had 5,

I haven't heard any news of them running 3 receiver sets in preseason with Brown Boutte and Doubs. Wouldn't they need to work on that at least a little in the preseason? Or is that going to be a top secret game plan to start the season where AJB and Doubs serve as decoys to draw coverage so Boutte can be the focal piece of the offense working contested catches down the sidelines?

I think Josh likes keeping certain things in his pocket. I'm positive you're going to see Doubs used in X, Y and Z routes regardless of where he lines up. I think you may even see Mack Hollins out there giving a breather to a TE at times too as Josh has used him as a TE in the past.

All they need to know is their routes - and they're running those routes in practice already. There's not much more to practice than that - only one WR is getting the ball thrown to them.

One bad injury week and all of sudden people wouldn't be so happy about the 5th or 6th they got for him.

I’m all for keeping Boutte. I just think he would be their 4 or 5 depending on the defensive match up. If we get a 3rd rounder then I pull the trigger. Otherwise we keep him.
Not good for Boutte on a contract year but Maye has good chemistry with him so he could come on. Like you said injuries at the WR position is common. Boutte is good depth.
