Texans Potentially a Trade Partner with Patriots For Boutte?

The two situations are very different. Brady was pouting about weapons despite the team being undefeated. They were also a Super Bowl contender midway through the season.

Agreed. It won't be that type of ripoff, but teams get desperate.

They need to get down to 53 on the roster without exposing too many assets to poaching. The Pats were in the Super Bowl last year and just looked really good against the Colts and Eagles in joint practices. They’re not going to sneak up on anyone or slide players to the practice squad without other teams noticing.

I'm not concerned if they lose any of the 3rd TE's, RB's (even Jam though I understand the argument), or the 3rd QB.

If they knock off one and certainly two of those spots, they easily fit in 7 WR's, and keep the rest of the positions with normal backups.

It's the first few weeks. They will have at least 1-2 development players sitting anyway.

BTW Kyle Williams was one of only two players returning kickoffs at the joint practice.

Dress 6 WR's, 2 RB's plus Gilliam, and 2 TE's (swing Hollins and an OL as the third?)???

They shouldn’t lose anyone they value. The team has to make the tough but pragmatic decision, even if it means taking less in return then they think he’s worth.

The team that trades for him still has to pay him, people need to understand this concept.

Not many are willing to consider we can't pay Boutte his next contract if we have Brown and Doubs and then extend Gonzo and Drake. He will walk after this year and I doubt he will bring a comp pick. When the offers peak, we have to take what we can get for him.
We want our cake and eat it too.

People are excited because he's a home-grown talent and we've been bad at developing WRs for so long. Of course we want to keep him.

Yet as you point out, it's clear he doesn't have a long term role here. The team looked at the WR situation and grabbed both Doubs and Brown this off-season and didn't offer a market-rate WR1 or WR2 extension to Boutte. This pretty much telegraphs how the front office values him, despite what the fan base thinks.

So, we argue back and forth about if he's worth keeping around for injury insurance vs getting something for him. No one knows what injuries may arise, and no one knows what the other teams are offering for him. We do know we only have 53 slots on the roster. All the other teams know that too so almost certainly aren't going to offer a thing for him till after cut-down day.

The players available at 3rd TE or RB depth (maybe Jam is ok), or 3rd QB do not have enough value IMO, to not just wait.

I don't understand why you continue obsessing about this. This was more true before camp and injuries.

As time progresses and injuries mount, teams start focusing on saving their season. In the right circumstances, overpaying for a player like Boutte and seeing how he works out on the new team becomes a better option than before.

The future becomes more of a now thing.

The reason Doubs got paid and Boutte is still waiting for the “big bucks” boils down to one word *contribution*…

In the past 3 years Doubs has 155 receptions and 18 TD’s vs. Boutte who has 78 receptions and 9 TD’s. So Doubs had literally contributed twice the number of receptions/TD’s as Boutte over the same period.

If the rumors are correct then any team in the league could have handed over a 5th round pick for our former 6th rounder and the soap opera would have been over. Unfortunately no team was willing to pony up so here we are.

As Eddie Murphy once said, “bidness is bidness” and since the NFL is most definitely a “bidness”, other teams won’t give up value for Boutte, and the Pats won’t give him away. So either he gets traded when some team loses a WR or he remains with the Pats because he is one of their best 6 receivers.

Either way, if/when Boutte gets his opportunity, if he wants to “get paid”, he’d best take care of “bidness”…..

You have to field a complete team in week
one. You need players to play special teams.

Moreover none of this matters, you aren’t cutting one or two of the WR’s who look good on the backend of the roster just because fans think they can get a higher draft pick for Boutte later. Dorner and DeGenerro are cheap. Chism looks like a keeper. Williams looks better than Boutte and brings added speed to the roster Boutte doesn’t.

Before game one they should sht or get off the pot. No amount of time is going to convince a team to give up a 2nd for Boutte and they shouldn’t cut good prospects based on hope. The Pats didn’t have to pay Sanu, a new contract factors into return compensation. There’s no point keeping him into the regular season.

Moved this to its own thread as the other is about the fact that Boutte was apparently the one who initiated the original trade request. This one is about potential news of one team that could be in play.

Doubs got paid because his contract expired. Bouttes expires after this year.

If a team believed Boutte would save their season, why in the world would we get rid of a guy that good?

Yeah it's called the need tax. Would he get a 1st? Probably not but thats where the negotiating starts.

Keep up, son.

Well old fart, I am not a son. Second, no we don't start with a #1. You are utterly delusional. It amazes be just how far out there some of you are. Were you one of the ones calling for firsts for Joe Milton too? I bet you were. hahahaha.

I understand how it works for you and me, but there are just too many fruit cakes who can't get this. One idiot is calling for a first round pic for Boutte. He won't be cut, thats for sure. Chism is the cut if there is one.

I don't imagine he will be cut, but I do think he will be traded. I think we have other receivers who are at least as good as he is at this point. I hope they get a third, but imagine they will take a 4th and be done. They have already moved him down to the second string players.

I’m still in the “keep Boutte” camp. I just think he’s a quality WR who has proven that he can make plays and who seems to have a nice rapport with Maye. Yes, they are going to have to get creative on cut day, possibly keeping 7 WRs. But it’s a long season, made even longer with the expectations of this being a playoff caliber team. Depth is critical. I just worry that NE would be trading away a guy who they may need.

Nick Caley is the Texans OC and he coached 8 seasons in NE.

The majority for McDaniels.

Better yet, their GM is Nick Casserio who was with the Pats even longer.

I used to be on the "keep him we need him for quality depth behind Brown and Doub" bandwagon, but after watching Williams and Hollins balling out against a good Eagle secondary, I wonder if keeping Boutte would just be a barrier for Williams to reach his potential as fast as possible. BUT only if we get a premium in the trade. I think a first or 2nd is ridiculous, but I would be interested in a 4th which COULD be a 3rd if Boutte reaches certain milestones, like the number of games he plays and the snaps he's on the field. I would also be willing to do a player swap for their top backup ILB and 2028 6th round pick.

Sanu brought back a 2.

Not saying that will happen, but the longer you wait the more Boutte will bring.

I don't see what's the big deal leaving him on the roster instead of one of the JAG RB's or TE's, while waiting to win a trade instead of giving Boutte away.
Waiting until closing time was smart.

That Boutte will be in demand.

Let’s hope the Saints and Texans are looking at Boutte through beer goggles.

We got a pick for a guy we were going to cut and looked terrible in Caedan Wallace.

Boutte has value, and teams competing for him drives up his price.

I’m thinking we can get a 3rd.

This is Rappaport throwing at the wall.

The Texans still have Dell, Collins, Jaylin Noel, and Xavier Hutchinson at WR. They aren't going to pay a premium for Boutte for him to be 3rd or 4th on their depth chart.

The pats also gave up a pick to make the deal happen. And the pick is 2 years from now.
