Some next day thoughts:

Defense
Interestingly, despite all the talk of the offensive line, it was really our great coverage that created the opportunities to heat up Herbert. We finally said hey we have 3 great corners and we matched up (even in zone) by down and distance which smothered the Chargers receivers and that allowed our coaches to dial up the pressure bigtime. Obviously late in the game once the game script ensured the Chargers would be passing our line was getting pressure even without blitzes but in quarters 1-3 (esp. Q3) it was really the blitz that created disruption.

Needless to say, really have to pray Gonzalez can clear concussion protocol for the next game as he was phenomenal in this game. Seems like the coaches have finally realized how to best utilize the strength of our defense which is our 3 top corners who match up pretty well with anyone we will see.

Thought the run defense was pretty stout for the most part. Chargers couldn't rely on gashing us and were forced into resorting to the pass often. We didn't completely stonewall them but multiple times on short yardage the defense plugged it up and got off the field or forced 4th down. Much much improved over recent weeks (guess Williams and Spillane really do make that much of a difference huh)

Offense
I was disappointed in the first half that we didn't stick with the run more. Stephenson in particular was very effective, as he was running through the first tackle pretty often and getting those 5-10+ yard runs consistently. His re-emergence in recent weeks continued in this game and I wish they leaned on it more in the first half.

Drake was definitely struggling to diagnose things in the first half and made a big adjustment in the second half, where I thought he played much better down-to-down. Not surprising given the Chargers are known for their disguised zone looks. The big thing he really needs to work on is when to just give up on a play - on all of his strip sacks he got contacted initially, fought it off, and still tried to get a pass off under duress and got stripped. That cost us 3 points and a chance to ice the game with 5 min left. Other than that, he missed the pass to Hooper for a TD which was unusual - perhaps the wind was a factor or maybe he just missed. Outside of those plays in the second half he was great.

The wide receivers didn't do a ton outside of Boutte with a couple of big plays but we know that they are a solid group that is more schemed open than physically dominating. Hunter Henry was the one who had the more favorable matchup and he generally delivered on that giving us most of our big plays through the air.

The offensive line was pretty bad frankly, esp. on the left side. I thought we played better with Ben Brown rather than Jared Wilson in and I honestly wish we stuck with that. We will need much better going forward. Wilson was getting both beat by his guy and having trouble picking up stunts from what I could see on the TV. Campbell had some issues too but mainly on getting bull rushed and at least he didn't let guys just bust through free unlike Wilson.

Overall the offense probably should have put up ~23 points (hit that pass to Hooper +4 pts, don't get strip sacked in FG range +3 pts) which is a respectable output against a very stout Chargers D.

Next week
Texans (who I assume we will be playing)

Our O vs. their D: they are less known for disguised coverage on the back end - they just physically whip you with their defense both in front 7 and in their coverage. We are going to have to be patient with the run game and try our best to get more linebackers on the field and throw at those linebackers. Our receivers will not be a big factor against those corners. We do NOT want to play a straight dropback game against that defense. Go jumbo, run at them, try to wear them down, and hit play action trying to get our TE matched up on their linebackers. Some trickeration may be in order (remember the Bills hook and ladder play to pick up 4th and 26?) as that defense plays super aggressive which can occasionally put them out of position - Josh better go to his bag a few times, we will likely need it. It will be a struggle to score 20 points.

Our D vs. their O: we really need Gonzalez back and frankly we can try to roll out the same type of gameplan vs. the Texans as we did for the Chargers. Texans have better receivers (Nico Collins is a stud, Kirk is a capable slot receiver, and they found a good rookie in Higgins) but similarly have an averagish rungame and the weakness is the offensive line. Their line is definitely better than the Chargers but both lines really struggle with blitz protections and stunts/pass rush games. We need to match up and lock their receivers and heat up the quarterback with a variety of blitzes and stunts to stretch the protection scheme. Stroud is a very similar player to Herbert in that he's got a strong and accurate arm, can be mobile, but has had to deal with relatively poor protection all year so he can get jittery if you start to heat him up (as he's kind of expecting it at this point so mentally will bail even when protection does hold up).

Texans are basically just a better version of the Chargers, on both sides of the ball. It will be a close one, and our offense will have to execute much better than this week. First team to 20 wins that game - I like our chances better than theirs but it's like 55/45.

The Patriots defense was frankly impressive. Stifling is the word that best describes what they were last night.

That’s why the Patriots are in the divisional round. Maye was bad.
Maye was NOT bad dude. Not as good as he usually is but he was lights out in the 2nd half. You're letting your hate make you delusional too

It was good prep for Houston if we play them. I think McDaniels will have a similar plan and add another wrinkle, probably in form of creative and quick ways to get the ball out of Maye's hands. Explosive plays will be few and far between with Houston's pressure.

Houston runs a shot zone and McDaniels is gonna have to scheme up some creative hot routes and coach up Maye how to do some serious presnap reads to find those soft spots in the coverage. How good are Houston safeties? Could tee off by getting them out of position. Probably one of the best run defenses we will face, so we're gonna see a lot of short/no yard run gains for the sake of snaps to set up the pass.
Agreed, Texans have a similarly good defense and coverage.

I say let's start Dobbs and tire them out sacking him before we bring in Maye mid 3rd QTR to go all MVP on them.
Who's with me on this brilliant out of the box "thinking" (sic) scenario?
lol, thats cruel and inhumane treatment of backups...

Ok. All pro Drake Maye looking pretty bad.
He looked bad on the two fumbles. Otherwise, he looked really good. He diagnosed blitzes, he beat them, threw for 173 yds in the second half, and he drove his team downfield (where the fumble happened).

Really, Drake was only a negative factor on that one play. Otherwise, he was directly responsible for 300 yards+ gained.

Chargers defense better than I expected.

We can laugh that Maye in his 2nd year has more playoff wins than Herbert, but the Chargers organization has been terrible. The broadcast last night going on about the "help" they've given him is complete nonsense. They hit two home runs on the OT's, but skill player wise has been a joke. Aside from that, he's the most handcuffed QB in the league. They haven't been able to replace Austin Eckler. Nobody has been afraid of their WR's/TE's for years. This board loved McConkey, but I told you he's not enough. Aside from his one shake and bake move on Jones, he was invisible. Their supporting cast was pathetic last night. Herbert won't win any games until the Chargers organization takes this seriously.

The Pats secondary played fantastic last night. As I mentioned in pre game thread, Gonzalez is a lot like Richard Sherman and can get bored at times. Completely shut down his side of the field. Carlton Davis was solid and called for a bogus PI.

Rough night for Maye, but he extended many plays with his feet and the one throw to seal it.

Henry bounced back after his early game drop for the game clinching TD.

Rham had a strong game.

Boutte with clutch catch and runs.

I thought Diggs was going to go off, but he was erased.

Campbell and Wilson had a rough night.

Defense is different when Spillane plays.

Milton Williams made his money last night with the two sacks including the game clincher.

Run defense is better with the two players mentioned above.

Ellis made some plays late to stall the Chargers drives.

Craig Woodson with some nice gap fills and tackling.

I loved the aggressive blitzing from Vrabel/Kuhr. Very Carroll/Steve Sidwell esque when they attacked Marino at all angles in the 1997 Wild Card game.

considering the level of defensive competition in the respective games, he played better than Josh Allen yesterday.

I don’t think Maye was bad as whole at all.

He had a couple awful plays. But down to down, he remained pretty solid.

Assweiler is rated higher than Herbo…

One thing that only Collinsworth seems to have noted.

1. Harbaugh went for it on 4th down at the goalline because they thought they could bottle up Maye, as he had just thrown an INT, so if they failed, they were sure they could contain him again.

2. They sent an all out blitz at Drake who was deep in his own end. Drake saw it, audibled out of it, and hit Rham who saw daylight.

3. Collinsworth mentioned this and he was right. It was a huge play because Maye showed he was mature enough to hurt you badly when you underestimated what he could do.

I don't think that's true but I'd love to be wrong
"New England will have to play at least the next four games without Hollins, including playoffs, with the 32-year-old eligible to return in the postseason if the Patriots advance. With two games remaining in the regular season, Hollins could return by the AFC Championship Game, with a possible first-round bye counting toward the four-game minimum absence."

The late Sunday slot is the coveted one for TV ratings. Houston doesn't have the cachet of the Pats, Steelers, or Bears.
I think Houston/New England is a bigger draw than LA/Chicago

My thoughts on last night:

The Pats D is hella good. They were actually good last year and the year before that too. But back then the offense, O Line and coaching was so incredibly bad they couldn’t compensate for that.

Grit. The Chargers were one of the defenses considered elite by most experts, and rightly so. This always looked like it would be a low scoring game and the Pats ground out a result against them.

This is probably, stat wise , the best D they will face in the playoffs. Houston is probably the next best then Denver. Point is, after last night Drake Maye should not have any undue fear going up against these Defenses. He showed he can do enough to put points up on them.

Josh McD is possibly the GOAT of Offensive Coordinators.

Milton Williams was a big reason why Philly were world champions last year. And also why they were one and done this time around!

Also forgot to mention this was a great win because of how they responded back from the 41-7 beatdown this Chargers team gave them last season. Aside from the OT's injured, this was pretty much the same Chargers team.

They may have to exercise their demons again against the Texans as I can see Rodgers choking tonight.
