Only one center? Risky
Also I think Reagor beats out Boutte
Only 3 rbs? They need one more if they want to focus on running
Leverett is listed as a guard but he's the back up OC.

You might be right about Reagor.

We will scour the cuts for a LB, RB and an OT.
I'll response to my own post.

We should be clear. There will be lots of players available that would be upgrades. I would hope for at least 5 waiver pickups or pickups the next day after the players clear waivers, plus a trade or two. I could see as many 2-3 OL's, 2-3 LB's and a RB.

Most importantly, they will be cheap so we will want them.

I would really have to strain to get to 53. The last time I had 50

We used to pride ourselves on the quality of the bottom 10 of the roster, JAGs and developmental players that contributed some.

This is the worst bottom 10 of the century.

Game 1 could easily start with 5 players not currently on the roster.

1) I'm OK with 10 OL's. However, I don't think that Anderson will make the roster instead of Love.
2) I have Ellis making the 53, perhaps in addition to Ximinez, but more likely instead of him.
3) I don't see us keeping Thornton. I don't get the point. We have 4 WR's plus Bourne coming back after a month. Reagor is a 5th WR and returner for now, and perhaps a 6th when Bourne comes back. I'm fine with Osborne and the three youngsters getting all the reps. If there is an injury, then Reagor will get some reps.

Do the new rules require that Barmore be on the 53 like last year, before being put on in-season IR. I though the new rule didn't require that. What was the change?

I don’t think they’ll pick up more than 3 waiver wire players - maybe one OT, one G/C and one DE. It’s hard to make an impact on a team after missing most of camp.

If a player is placed on this list before the regular season begins, he could miss the entire season unless — per a rules adjustment this year — they are designated to return during the roster cutdown to 53 players after training camp. Teams can designate up to two such players to return.

By Competition Committee; amends Article XVII, Section 17.16(C), to permit each club to place a maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return. Such players will immediately count as two of the club’s total designations.

In plain words, the new rule allows teams the ability to place two players on injured reserve at the roster cutdown deadline to return during the season. That has not been the case in the past with the NFL; if a player went on injured reserve before the active 53-man roster is set, he was out for the season.

If this is the case, Barmore won't count toward the 53? not that it matters much.

=============================

1) We could cut down to under 53 to give some flexibility. Obviously, there are at least a couple of players we have no interest in keeping on the 53 for Game 1.

2) There are several positions where I hope to upgrade with waiver wire players and free agents after the cut: LB, DE/OLB, RB, IOL, LT, TE, S/ST. I do see LT and LB as real holes.

3) I also expect us to trade/cut Osborne or Thornton, hopefully Osborne, freeing up another roster spot, probably a 4th OT.

4) Finally, this year is very different from others. We all recognize that we are in a rebuild. We pick third on waiver wire. We have lots of weakness at the bottom of the roster, fine for a team that is looking for developmental prospects.

Don't know if we need Schooler unless he contributes at S during the games. Not excited about either of our kickers but lack any conviction with Ryland.

I like Jennings at RB but he can probably be retained on the ps. Undecided about the 4th DT between, Watts, Purcell and Hill.

FWIW, here is Phil Perry's roster projection, as of Friday Aug 16:

Quarterback (3): Jacoby Brissett, Drake Maye, Joe Milton

Running back (4): Rhamondre Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, Kevin Harris, JaMycal Hasty

Wide receiver (6): Ja'Lynn Polk, DeMario Douglas, Javon Baker, K.J. Osborn, Jalen Reagor, Tyquan Thornton
Depending on the day, we may have either Thornton or Kayshon Boutte in that sixth spot.

Tight end (3): Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Jaheim Bell

Offensive line (8): Chukwuma Okorafor, Sidy Sow, David Andrews, Mike Onwenu, Vederian Lowe, Caedan Wallace, Layden Robinson, Nick Leverett
This may end up being more about roles than roster spots.
Will Lowe -- who had a difficult night Thursday -- remain a starter ahead of Week 1?
Will the Patriots try Onwenu at tackle and allow Layden Robinson to get some first-team reps alongside Andrews?
Still a fluid situation here.

Specialists (3): Joey Slye, Joe Cardona, Bryce Baringer

Defensive line (7): Deatrich Wise, Armon Watts, Davon Godchaux, Daniel Ekuale, Jeremiah Pharms, Mike Purcell, Trysten Hill
For a defense that is going to be focused on stopping early-down runs, having a half-dozen big bodies to throw at the problem -- allowing them to rotate and stay fresh -- makes some sense.
Purcell, 33, is an experienced vet with the frame to hold his ground and eat blocks as a backup of sorts to Godchaux on the nose. Hill could chip in as an interior rusher with some explosiveness off the ball as Christian Barmore deals with his blood clot diagnosis.

Linebacker (9): Anfernee Jennings, Keion White, Oshane Ximines, Jahlani Tavai, Josh Uche, Ja'Whaun Bentley, Christian Elliss, Raekwon McMillan, Joe Giles-Harris
Joe Giles-Harris gets his hands on too many footballs in practice to leave off here.
He's impressed linebackers coach Dont'a Hightower with his instincts in coverage.

Cornerback (6): Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, Marco Wilson, Alex Austin, Isaiah Bolden
We'll keep Wilson and Austin on the list since they've received a good deal of reps with top defenders in camp this summer. Let's also include Bolden, whose special-teams value -- he laid a punishing hit on a kickoff Thursday -- stands out.

Safety (4): Kyle Dugger, Jabrill Peppers, Jaylinn Hawkins, Brenden Schooler
Without having seen Marte Mapu to this point in the summer, we'll leave him off for now, though he'd be expected to be on the roster whenever he returns to action.
