I agree...that we're a Lot closer to a top-10 defense than to a top-5 one.

They were top five D last season despite missing the best individual player on the entire team, their best young shutdown CB and best young slot CB along with dragging the 32nd worst offense around behind them... they're returning their entire defense. If the offense can do anything at all they'll be a top five defense again assuming health and if the coaches can replicate what BB did.

The team stats will reflect that when the offense starts pulling it's weight. The defensive stats from last season already show a top five defense. I don't see how a team with a defense this good could be voted the roster that most needs help... they only needed to fix the offense and that mostly meant the QB position.

A player declaring themself healthy means nothing. I'm sure JJSS declared himself healthy before free agency last year.

I think that getting Gonzo and Judon back will help move us closer to 5.

One factor we don't consider about 2023 is that the Offense was soooo bad that their Offense didn't have to score many points to win. They didn't have to come back against us in high scoring games. So, fewer points were scored than might have been scored if our Offense was better.

On the other hand, our poor Offense kept our Defense on the field for longer than it should have been. A solid running game this year should greatly help the Defense.

The Pats 2023 offense was one of the worst in NYFL history. The defensive players did pretty well to keep it together.

It is kind of amazing how well the defense held up last year. As long as the offense stops repeatedly giving the other team the ball, the overall team will be better. I think there will be a lot of low scoring games next. year.

I wouldn’t put a lot of energy into these kind of rankings. Most of the commentary I’ve seen from “national level” writers. regarding all the teams not just the Pats is very focused on offense in general and QB in particular.

Let’s be real here, they have a “journeyman” projected to start at QB, a total question mark at LT, and no “big names” on that side of the ball. Their revamped offensive coaching staff doesn’t have anyone with “pizzazz” from the national perspective (led by a guy who “failed” in Cleveland with support from a guy who “failed” with the Giants). No shock that people who don’t follow the team closely and don’t really pay attention to defense are not impressed.

WGAF what they think. The way I look at it right now, they have nowhere to go but up on offense and if they can get decent play from whomever is at LT they will be better than last year with the practice squad level Lowe and the out of shape all season Brown. Just not having former employee #10 out there pissing himself and throwing pick 6s every game almost guarantees improvement, they won’t be starting the season relying on two rookie guards and no one worth a crap at OT.

In regard to the defense it is not debatable that they were in the top 10 last year in spite of missing most of the season without the single best player on their team and their promising young CB, not to mention Marcus Jones who can make plays as a punt returner and has at least a chance to improve from his rookie year at CB. They get them back and lost no one of any consequence (sorry Mack Wilson and Laurence Guy), and have reason to hope about Keion White. About the only thing that disappointed me about their defense was the relatively low takeaway numbers. I expect them to be a very good unit again, especially if they improve at FS and the other outside CB position.

Regarding special teams, they obviously need the kicker to be improved and to cut way back on the penalties. I’m like most fans regarding Ryland, hoping for the best but expecting a short leash with the guys that decided to blow an early 4th round pick on him gone. We’ve seen cases where a kicker who was damn good in college craps themselves at first in the NFL and then figures it out; Daniel Carlson on the Raiders comes to mind, it so does Roberto Aguayo. Just having Achord gone and Jones back gives me optimism about improving there.

Have to agree with you. Some of the so called "experts" seem to pass them by when evaluating the Patriots

And you heal much easier in your early twenties.

Judon had 4 sacks through 2 1/2 games last season, if he was getting old... he sure didn't play like it.

32 to begin this season and hopefully fully healed.

This. I can't take any assessment of our defense seriously until you take into account how much a bad offense can screw over a good defense. And it's the part most conveniently left out by those who contend it's not that good. Whether that was Bill's genius or the players are amazing (probably a bit of both), the defenses since 2019 have been very stifling.

The thing that makes the past few years so annoying is the defense was at a point where you didn't even need a great offense. That's how bad the organization fumbled the ball in the last few years, Bill included. You built something that is strong and has enough young talent to last. Instead you let it fester in the shadow of heaping mound of **** that was the offense.

I'm excited to see this year if the offense is even marginally better, which isn't a tall task.

They are just stirring the pot, you can make a case for any point of view if you want to be sensational. Yes, there are open questions about OL and WR. All teams have areas of development and weakness. The bottom line is that the Pats now have Drake ****ing Maye as a young player to go along with the recent draftees and an established core of players. That feels like having some strong young assets. Going into the season with realistic expectations, I am more worried about the coaching staff becoming a cohesive unit right away than I am about the individual talent.
