He's competitive, for sure. The rest is highly questionable. I just wish they'd cut him and designate Maye No. 2 (for now).
If Zappe is so awful, should be cut, and never allowed to don a Pats uniform ever again, then why IS he still there? Why is he still getting reps that could be given to another young QB prospect that would eventually land on the PS and surely be a better option? Why are they wasting reps and coaching time on someone as useless as Zappe?

It’s inexplicable, right? They owe him nothing and the opportunity cost is not negligible. Someone with more upside than him could be learning the offense and getting familiar with the team.

Why would the Patriots keep a player so laughably bad that one poster here contends he shouldn’t be in the league? I really don’t buy the “body for camp” argument. The reps and coaching are precious, and wasting them on someone who shouldn’t even be the PS QB seems grossly incompetent.

He's here to provide another arm during camp.

How many teams in the league currently have only one QB on their roster entering camp that’s played a snap in the NFL? Bears look to have two and Commanders have three. Seems unusual for a reason.

I believe the only way Zappe starts is if Brisset gets hurt and Maye isn't ready yet.

There is no sane world where Zappe beats out a healthy Jacoby Brissett.

Teams will have between 70-100 QB's on their 53- man rosters and IR/PUP list to start the season.

Arguably, these QB's are "playing in the NFL".

Have many do YOU think are good enough to play in the NFL?

40-50. The rest would only “ lead” their team’s to losses.

How many 3rd string QB’s do you believe are starting caliber QB’s?

I realize they need to fill the spot for emergency relief, but most 3rd string QB’s aren’t good enough to start and win games. And there are plenty of 2nd string QB’s who couldn’t either.

If your standard is that anyone who can play QB in the NFL and not win games consistently then we are all NFL QB’s. I consider an NFL caliber QB to be one who can actually win games. And I’m not setting the bar ridiculously high, I don’t expect them to go 12-5.

I do not believe Zippy gets the opportunity to show out this summer. Brissett and Maye need the snaps, and there will be some focus also on Milton.
the staff does right by Zippy and releases home to find a chance elsewhere.
I think the interest is minimal from other teams.
ideally, Maye is under C by game 4 or sooner

Perhaps you mistakenly assume this coaching staff actually knows what it's doing. But we'll see come training camp why Zappe remains on the roster -- if he actually does.

It’s bizarre how Mac Jones was traded, but Zappe stays. That’s dysfunction right there.

Not really. The reports out of Foxborough were that Jones was the one making life difficult in the QB’s room, which makes sense given that he was the displaced starter. Jones didn’t want be there, and the patriots had a big option on him they weren’t going to pay, so they took the best offer they could get. No one is going to trade for Zappe, although he’s probably better than Jones. Milton is a long term project, I don’t see them cutting him to keep Zappe around as the 3.

Where did I say Brian Hoyer was better than anybody. You will have to show me that?
You didn’t say it (afaik, I don’t read every post), and I didn’t claim you did. I didn’t put words in your mouth. Did you see the question mark?

My opinion is that Hoyer is NOT better than Zappe, yet he has had a long career. Sure, he’s bounced around, been out of the league, but always comes back. Nine teams have decided at some point that Brian Hoyer is an NFL QB. And if Hoyer is an NFL QB (which he clearly is, according to a slew of teams), and if Zappe is as good or better than Hoyer, then Zappe is also an NFL QB.

Now you might say that Hoyer brings more to the table than his play. Could be. Hard to argue against something subjective like that. But he still might get in a game, and he better be an NFL when he does.

I think your QB evaluation methodology, whatever it is (“I don’t like this player”?) is whack.

I don’t assume it at all. I said if Zappe is truly garbage and they continue with him into TC, and then potentially into the season, then they’ve bungled the whole thing. It’s deleterious to have him in a Pats uniform if that’s the case. So either they think he’s better than or equal to the alternatives at the moment, or the Zappe question has slipped their radar (not believable), or their QB evaluation is whack, or they are waiting because the right alternative hasn’t manifested yet (and they believe there’s no penalty for delay).

Who are you referring to?
I’ll have to find the comment, but someone was saying something along the lines of “They keep Zappe, but trade Mac Jones?” And I was wondering if the implication was that Jones would play backup here. He didn’t say it outright, but I found the comment odd because in my mind, after last season, those situations are strictly independent. Jones had to go, period, regardless of Zappe’s fate. I’ll find it when I have access to my desktop.

He's here to provide another arm during camp.
Again, okay, but why wouldn’t the team pick an arm with future potential? The advent of the PS has changed the equation regarding QB depth charts, especially now that you are not limited to 3 elevations. Give a guy who might have a chance to blossom into something decent instead of having a garbage player in camp.

You realize if he even goes to the PS, your “arm in camp” assertion cannot stand, right? You can’t say, “Well he knows the system,” because he’s learning it fresh just like every QB not named JB. And if he doesn’t go the PS, the Pats have left themselves with Maye-Milton as the depth chart should Brissett go down, and if there’s another injury, then they have no QB on the PS for backup that knows the system because the Pats had a garbage camp arm instead of developing a player in the preseason.

It’s really an absurd position, sorry.

Zappe is getting cut and then brought back to the PS after he clears waivers, same as the last two years.

He ain’t starting. (Period)
