Zappe’s sample size is much smaller and therefore a far less reliable predictor of future performance, especially given his age. Of his 12 career INTs, he threw 9 of them last year, and we all know what that was like. Brissett has good wheels, which will never be part of Zappe’s game.Of all the various statistics to compare, this one sticks out https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/B/BrisJa00.htm
Brisset also tops Zappe in other categories such as passer rating, QBR, sack rate, adjusted yards per attempt, success rate, net yards per attempt and adjusted net yards per attempt. These are all useful statistics compiled from the largest possible sample size, their full NFL careers. In other words it's a better gauge than what may unfold in a meaningless preseason game or two.
Quote one post which says I favor Zappe over Brissett or where I say Zappe is a better player than Brissett. Show me one post where I am “actively rooting” for Zappe to start over Brissett. I’ll say it flat out: I want Brissett to start. I also want the Pats to protect Maye and let him develop this season, which means I want a backup QB not named Maye (or Milton, but for different reasons).Perhaps you are indeed not a Zappe apologist - but from my perspective based on your posts and threads, you certainly appear to be actively rooting for him to be the starter over Brissett.
Duh.Right, so #1 is the issue: Mayo was just blowing smoke when he said that everyone has a shot at QB1.
No it isn't. There was no way they were allowing Jones to stick around and infect the new guy. Zappe is training camp fodder. It’s bizarre how Mac Jones was traded, but Zappe stays. That’s dysfunction right there.
This is exactly how I see things, unless the Pats decide to carry 4 QBs, which I think could happen because of Milton. They knew Milton would take time when they drafted him. It's unlikely he clears waivers or survives the PS, so if they aren't willing to keep him on the roster, why draft him at all? Either they carry 4 QBs or are comfortable with Maye as QB2. I'm betting 4 QBs, but perhaps that's just me hoping they protect Maye.I see it as, post OTAS, unless **** really goes sideways in camp...
Starter (Interim) - Brisket - AVP bluntly stated that Brisket is the starter... I believe him more than I believe Coach Mayos equivocating on the topic...
Second String, Primary Back up - Zappe - Zappe is a career back up/spot starter type player... and there isn't anything wrong with that... he can carve out a nice career for himself, just ask Brian Hoyer... in regards to 2024, I really can't see the team rolling into the season with just rookies as backups... doesn't make sense... unless some other vet who AVP is familiar with, who knows his system to a decent degree, gets kicked loose in/after camp, Bailey should get the nod here... and bonus, he's cheap...
Third String (Future Starter, post bye start w14? perhaps, we'll see) - The other #10, Drake Maye
Fourth String - Milton (practice squad / scout team only, will not be active all year)
The 2024 practice squad rules changed in regards to quarterbacks only... they can be elevated an unlimited number of times, without the former three game restriction... So there are options to move guys back and fourth between the active roster and the practice squad without exposing them to the waiver wire after three call ups... it's an exercise in roster management, but it can be easily exploited to keep all four guys in the fold...
Milton will be on the practice squad. Much like Cunningham, if he signs elsewhere, you won't even notice. This is exactly how I see things, unless the Pats decide to carry 4 QBs, which I think could happen because of Milton. Let's say Brissett gets injured in the final preseason game. Is Maye is the game one starter? I don't want to put words in your mouth, but it seems like you think Zappe has no business being in the NFL, let alone starting game one. So if you're the Pats, if Brissett goes down, you roll with Maye and Milton as QB1 and QB2, release Zappe, and find someone else who actually is a legit NFL QB for QB3?If that’s the case then Brissett isn’t an NFL caliber QB, because Zappe certainly isn’t one.
Okay. I'm not high on Milton either. There were probably some other guys at his draft position who could have helped the team more, maybe on special teams.Milton will be on the practice squad. Much like Cunningham, if he signs elsewhere, you won't even notice.
i have zero issues with doubling up on the QB position... Milton just needs a lot of work... I can't see anyone raiding our practice squad for a raw prospect with accuracy issuesOkay. I'm not high on Milton either. There were probably some other guys at his draft position who could have helped the team more, maybe on special teams.
Barely held off Mac? The headcoach wanted to bench Mac two years ago and was told “no” by the owner. We drafted a QB in the first and 6th
..signed a QB in FA...and we're going to start the guy who could barely hold off Mac Jones?
I hope not.
Ok fair, probably a little rough on my end.Barely held off Mac? The headcoach wanted to bench Mac two years ago and was told “no” by the owner.
He didn’t mesh with O’Brien last season, if Mac’s starting unit was bad then the one Zappe inherited late in the season was far worse. More injuries, apathetic teammates and more dysfunction. By the time he took over it was an unmitigated disaster.Ok fair, probably a little rough on my end.
Regardless, I don't think the play was good enough to warrant a starter role this year.
Like my HS French teacher and her thunder thighs.I’m going to mark you down as the first member of the “Zappe is thicc” contingent.
If Brissett gets hurt in game one because our LT sucks, who are we throwing out there? We drafted a QB in the first and 6th
..signed a QB in FA...and we're going to start the guy who could barely hold off Mac Jones?

He’s a good kid and teammate. He’s competitive and smart. It’s hard not to like him.
On June 9th 2024? Zappe naturally... By game 1? I hope Maye.If Brissett gets hurt in game one because our LT sucks, who are we throwing out there?
If the Pats start 1-4 with Brissett they will bring out Maye to see if he can turn things around plus to see if he is the QB of the future.I'm sure you saw that the scenario I laid out is tightly constrained. But if 1-4 are hits, Zappe will start, if Mayo is to be believed. Unlikely, but possible. 5% chance, let's say.
Uh, if Maye is QB2, Zappe will not be on the team. He serves no purpose. If the Pats start 1-4 with Brissett they will bring out Maye to see if he can turn things around plus to see if he is the QB of the future.
If Maye then brings this team to a 2 or 3 win team and we are sitting at #1 the team might need to consider going after a QB again.
In no way should Zappe be starting unless both Brissett and Maye get hurt
