Former Patriots Receiver Ja'Lynn Polk Retiring

It looks like former Patriots receiver Ja’Lynn Polk’s NFL career is coming to an end.

According to the NFL’s Ian Rapoport, Polk is walking away from the NFL, with the young receiver retiring at the age of just 24.

Polk, who was a former 2nd round pick from the class of 2024 Patriots Draft Picks, has since been placed on the Non Football Injury/Retired list by the Saints.

Nick Underhill, who was previously the Patriots beat reporter here in New England with MassLive but now covers the Saints in New Orleans, reports that things were going well prior to his decision. Underhill posted on X that, “I’m told that Ja’Lynn Polk was healthy and happy with his role (he was getting significant snaps). He just decided the best path forward for himself was to step away.”

The former Washington receiver was traded to New Orleans last September along with a 2028 7th round selection, with New England receiving a 2027 6th round pick in return. Reports say his decision will not affect the Patriots’ compensation.

Polk caught just 12 passes on 33 targets for 87 yards and a touchdown during his rookie season in 2024. He got off to a good start that season after catching five of his first six in his first three games including his touchdown. But his struggles began, and he caught just 7 of his next 27 targets, including catching just one pass over the course of the final seven games of 2024.

Coming into last summer, the former 2024 second-round selection had made it clear he was on a mission to prove his doubters wrong, and had some moments where he did flash in camp. However, that effort was inconsistent, and there were questions prior to when he got hurt about his future with the football team.

Polk had been placed on season-ending injured reserve following a shoulder injury he sustained this preseason against the Washington Commanders. The injury came on a running play where Polk tried to stiff-arm a defender, but his left arm got caught underneath him as he was being taken down.

He came off the field favoring his shoulder, which was the same one he had surgically repaired the previous offseason.

Polk Recently Said His Hunger is “Never Gone”

The September trade, despite being on injured reserve, gave the Saints an opportunity to see if the young receiver could continue developing given the promise that he showed early on in New England.

The interesting thing is that Polk previously talked this offseason about how hungry he was for his first full season in New Orleans.

“(The hunger is) never gone. It’s always there, it’s always going to be there,” Polk said via NOLA.com’s Luke Johnson last month . “And a lot of these guys, pretty much everybody in here, is hungry as well.

“We’ve got a big old plate, and everybody is going to have the opportunity to go out there and eat.”

Polk also said that New Orleans was where he felt he was supposed to be.

“I feel like I’m supposed to be here,” Polk said. “For them … bringing me in here and having that trust of seeing the player I’m capable of being, it speaks a lot. I just want to go out there each and every day and show them they made the right decision of bringing me in here.”

Instead, it’s a gamble that didn’t pay off, and Polk will now move on to the next chapter as he steps away from the gridiron.
