Now hear me out: Zappe could start over Brissett.

There are a few prerequisites to believing this might happen. You must believe or accept:
  1. 1. Mayo's claim that QB1 is up for grabs (but not for the rookies).
  2. 2. Either the Pats are going with 4 QBs OR that Milton is going to the PS.
  3. 3. The Pats will not start the season with Maye (or Milton) as QB1 or QB2.
  4. 4. Zappe can outplay Brissett in the preseason.
Now, I'm no Zappe apologist, but I'm also not a hater. I suspect the gap between Zappe and Brissett is small enough such that it's possible that Zappe outplays him in the preseason. I admit it's not likely, but man, it sure would be entertaining to see the heads of Zappe haters exploding if Zappe lights it up and Mayo starts him as QB1, true to his word.

I suppose anything can happen….i was a huge zappe supporter up until last year. He’s a serviceable backup and made a few incredible throws last season…..but overall he is still very limited in what he can do I think. I still think it comes down to Brissett and Maye for #1 ….and then I could see Milton kept over Zappe for #3….we shall see

The only way I see Zappe starting is if Brissett is hurt because of atrocious protection and the rookies are some combination of not ready and not worth risking sending out behind said o line.

He’s going to have to be a LOT better than he was last preseason if he wants to stay on this roster. There’s also the factor that Zappe is from the old regime and doubtful Mayo and staff feel any need to be “loyal” to him.

So I wouldn’t count on it.

I'm sure you saw that the scenario I laid out is tightly constrained. But if 1-4 are hits, Zappe will start, if Mayo is to be believed. Unlikely, but possible. 5% chance, let's say.
There is a simpler path to Zappe starting opening day.

Brissett gets hurt in camp, or during the preseason. He's not injury prone per se, but he's had an MCL, a concussion, and a couple of hamstring injuries that forced him to miss time. I'd call a Brissett injury a more likely outcome that him getting beat by Zappe.

I've been taught to always test my premises.
How would you test that one? Sample size for Zappe is small compared to Brissett, and last year would have been brutal for any QB. If Zappe reduces his INTs, he might be better than Jacoby in the long run. I don’t think there’s enough data to say either way, unless you assume last year is par for the course with Zappe, which seems unreasonable.

He has better odds being on a different NFL roster over starting for NE.
There’s no doubt he lands somewhere in the NFL should his journey here end. If he reduces the INTs he will have a good career as a backup.

Someone below brought up the Brissett injury wildcard. If JB goes down late in preseason, it’s hard to deny that Zappe time might return. I can’t imagine they’d roll with Maye. BZ could be the starter after having an uninspiring preseason, like a zombie that won’t stay dead.

he looks more like a kicker tbh

Brissett was hired to teach Maye some things about being a pro, like going to the field, score a TD, do not overcelebrate, games not over until it is, or throw a pick/fumble, keep your head up, level headed, understand what happened what lead to that mistake, among other things about being a team captain.

Zappe is pretty much competing for his NFL career and in desperate mode, he's not in position to teach ****.

Even if he plays better than Brissett in pre season I don't see it.
