No, I made it because the Patriots "want to keep" Uche, but no offer...they Want to keep Henry but are "far apart"...they consider Onwenu a "cornerstone," but nothing (like I said, if they sign him, I'll retract, but I'm seeing the same old, same old)...
So again you have no info other the what reporters were told. Because we all know agents and sources never lie to boost their clients value. I could get being his upset if this was the end of FA but itvis the start

How long do we get to decide on matching? If it's any significant amount of time, might be a good way to suppress his market. Teams ready to burn top of the market money aren't going to want to leave that cap space hanging around. So maybe you wipe out the top of his market and can negotiate for less?

It's a gut punch to Dugger. A team offering him will have to tie up their FA resources for nearly a week while the others in the market go away, which means he comes back and the Pats save a couple million dollars.

If you're going to tag a guy you want to keep, a guy who came up through his rookie deal in your system, use the damned Franchise Tag.

I don't know.

To me, it means they have no intention of letting him walk, otherwise they would have given him a tag that gives them some compensation if they turn down the offer.
The practical effect of the franchise tag is that it prevents almost all offers. I'm not sure any team has ever gotten the two firsts for a franchise tagged player, and certainly not since 2011.

What a stupid move! Nobody is giving Duggar that kind of money, he just isn’t that good. Now they have removed any chance of compensation too!

Not exactly giving me a lot of hope that things will be different. I hope that Kraft doesn’t think he is Jerrah and is going to be his own GM, and Mayo is his puppet

Interesting. I would think that's going to prohibit a team from making a big offer to him right out the gate. And we've seen in the past that free agency money dries up fairly quickly. This might end up a good strategy to being able to re-sign him without having to go too far outside our comfort zone. We'll see though.

I think we can find a Dugger though finding a LT and Quality G is not that easy.
Right so how do you know they are not close to a deal? Maybe the deal they are close on is the same or less then the transition tag and tagging him would break the deal but not for Dugger.

Helluva gut punch. Here's $13m, go find out if there's more and we will match.

Sign me up for half of that gut punch. I'll take two gut punches and punch in the face for 6.5m.

I'm fine with tag.

STRATEGY ONE
Make an offer.
If Dugger doesn't accept, Dugger would look for other deals.
Dugger might then bring back the deal and basically have the team bid against the other team.

STRATEGY TWO
Use the tag and allow Dugger to look.
If and when, Dugger can come back with one offer, which the team can match or not; no bidding war.
If Dugger doesn't get an offer that he wants, the team has Dugger for a reasonably one-year contract while further negotiations continue.

Why use the more expensive tag if all you want is the right of first refusal? Maybe Dugger wants to come back and is willing to come back at market value and the pats instead of trusting the player covered their bases. The tag does not have to be the contract it is a way to make sure you can negotiate but also know you keep the player

I'll do it for free.

Normally when teams make a deal with a tagged player it replaces the one-year deal altogether.
That was my thought.

Franchise tagged player often play on the tag but with the transitional tag the only way I see for the player to play on the tag is if no one offers him a contract. Right?

I don’t mind the using of the transition tag. It costs less money and no one was giving up two firsts for Dugger anyway. It also makes it more likely he will have a depressed market as teams are less likely to offer a player that can be matched.

What I don’t understand is why we wouldn’t use the transition tag on Onwenu. It seems very unlikely we retain him now.

Makes sense. Dugger is the leader of the secondary now. He alleviated the play callin concerns in the secondary after McCourtey left. If a team is hell bent on adding Dugger they can give the pats a pick.

Your bias is showing. Do you seriously think it was just "being cheap" if you do then you do not understand football and how it works
I think we need OT’s more than safeties so perhaps not cheap but *mistaken* not securing Onwenu…

Now they have removed any chance of compensation too!

We're not getting any compensation in any event - we're going to be signing some expensive FAs. So this basically saves us a few million dollars compared with a Franchise Tag. Doubt if anyone would make him an offer at this point - basically a pain-in-the-ass negotiating a deal that the Patriots could then match.

Very rarely used - last example was Kenyon Drake in 2020, and before that Kyle Fuller in 2018 - that one was then converted into a longer contract.

Only downside here that I can see is the inability to use the Franchise Tag on Onwenu. But maybe they have a contract close to done with him.

Or like already mentioned we either have a deal or are close to a deal w/Onwenu. We’ll find out soon enough.

And how do you know where the negotiations are with Onwenu? So much assumption
