Patriots Player Departure FA: Add A Veteran QB back up? Pats to cut Hoyer...

You could see the writing on the wall for Hoyer... Its why I brought him up in the original post of the thread...

And that is an interesting cap question... But since he's no longer a player, I think it would be ok to do so... But thats just a wild ass guess on my part
The rule is that  if a coach becomes a player, then his coaching salary gets added to the cap on top of his player salary.

... Maybe they don't want a 37 year old backup making near 2m...
They guaranteed nearly his entire 2023 salary, so that's not a relevant concern.

IMO I don't think they will draft a QB in the 1st 3 rounds and if they get a vet it will only be JG.
This only makes sense if you think he will only command $5M or so on the open market. I expect he will get a lot more than that.

I have no idea if he is willing to do a team-friendly deal with the Patriots or not but you might be right.

I’ve read he doesn’t want to coach.
Since I've been one of the ones pointing this out, let me give you the exact quote.

“Why can’t the Patriots just make Hoyer the QB coach?”

Brian Hoyer today: “I think my wife may leave me if I do that. ‘Honey, I am going to work longer hours and get paid less’…I wouldn’t rule it out, it’s something I don’t think about right now.”

In other words, his wife wouldn't approve of him coaching while he can still play.

But they do pick up a quarter mil 8n cap space... I don't know why they cut him loose, it was just one guess

That's exactly right...while he can still play. Let's see what happens now.

Mayfield doesn't look like he's totally cooked even though it seems like that's the general feeling out there, not even 2 years ago he was considered a established starter.

Also draft Bennett from Georgia in the 5th or 6th round

They really don't.

Someone has to replace him on the roster, and it will be a lot more than 1/4 million.

Maybe it will be someone who actually plays?

I dunno Fam... I'm just making guesses as to why... Not saying I'm wrong, not saying I'm right...

I also assume the Pats are targeting a QB on Day 3.
I'm not sure what the plan is, TBH. By the time the Pats felt they didn't need a veteran QB behind Brady, he had already won three SBs.

You're obviously right.

He's gone.

Couple of former Patriots we should bring Stiddy back he played well last year. I don't think there's a big drop for him to our possible Starter.
Stidham looked great in the ganes he started for the Raiders. Accurate, smart, good runner. Would love to have him back but I susoect Raiders bring him back

Stidham only played two games for the Raiders. You must have missed the 2nd game. 61% comp, 1 TD, 1 INT, 76 Rtg., and lost by a wide margin while padding his stats at the end.

I still thought ke looked good in the loss. Poised and calm in pocket. I think he is more talented than Zappe for sure and possibly better than Mac

I always liked the way he looked and his throwing motion, but he lost both Raiders games and his stats in the 2nd game would have been worse (already not good) if the Raiders did not lose by so much and the Chiefs weren't playing soft. He definitely looks the part versus Zappe, but he should be making a lot more $$s in 2023, so I am not sure there is enough difference to pay the extra $$s. Plus Zappe could improve, but has a low ceiling IMO.

Begs the question, are the Pats avoiding a QB controversy by releasing him then?

No, no they aren't, lol...
Cutting Hoyer is a pretty interesting move if you want to take the time to read into what it might mean.

Could it mean they want to draft a QB this year so if Mac is not the answer for 2024 they'll have someone to fill in?

Could mean Hoyer becomes a coach on the staff?

Zappe is QB2 and want to continue giving him backup QB reps in 2023?
Opens Cap money and competition from the start MAC Jones vs. Zappe for QB1

I should have added and maybe another surprise QB1

I initially thought Mac was on short lease also.. but those thoughts faded when I saw the overwhelming endorsement by RK.. I believe he as a very smart and articulate man knows Mac wasn't put in the most ideal of situations.

He'll be given ample opportunity to lead this team under a some structure and hopefully more weapons.. I actually feel it's BB who may be on the short leash..
RK supported Mac Jones because BB didn't. Kraft wants a winner he doesn't care about Jones unless he can win or the Pats win with him. MO
