I’m coming around to not naming Mayo DC

I still don't understand why we think Mayo would be the next great coach. Not saying he couldn't be, but! Who knows how much responsibility he has for the defense. If you don't give Steve credit, why would you give Mayo credit?

Josh should hire Steve for the Raiders DC. Get him away from BB and maybe he would get some credit on his own. Then you can have Mayo as DC.
It's for a variety of factors.

#1. He was always known as a very smart player on the field, he excelled at diagnosing plays
#2. He was a leader and captain on the team
#3. No player--not Tom Brady, not Bruschi, McCourty, etc.--devoted themselves to football (and New England) more than Mayo.
#4. No player spent more time studying football, the playbook, diagnosing offenses, relaying that info to teammates, than Mayo.
#5. His nickname in those years was Jerod Belichick.
#6. When you combine the package (ex-Pro Bowl player, super smart, well respected, very hard working, very knowledgeable about football), it's obvious we have a potential unicorn waiting to become a HC.

My position wasn't opinion. That's the whole point.

MUST interview minorities + Do not need to interview white males = textbook discrimination
I bet there has never been a single HC/GM/C job interview process where multiple white candidates were not interviewed in the history of the league (excluding where jobs were just offered).

I would also bet that before the Rooney rule, most interviews never included minority candidates.

There is no rule mandating interview of white candidates because it is not needed and not because of discrimination against white candidates. That is an absurd assertion and a disingenuous argument. There is one for minority candidates because it is needed to combat clear discrimination in the hiring practices of the league as evidenced by actual data.

I used to think the Rooney rule was weird when I was young and completely clueless.

Again, in the modern NFL, many former players are do not jump straight to being given the a position group to coach. Troy Brown started off a coaching fellowship before he moved over to running backs.
I get it but it is stupid. Brown starting out with menial tasks is insanity. That is what these internships are.

The Pats should counter and name Mayo as assistant HC of the NEP, as he may be the best successor to BB... who I think will retire after this year.
I don't think BB is retiring until he passes Don Shula. I would like to see Brian Flores back with the Patriots as the HC in waiting.

Ok, so you either don't know the English language or you can't accept the reality of the language and are just too emotional to let your mind actually think on this topic. Either way, that's a you problem.

Because, again, it is discrimination against white males, by definition.

A lot of between the lines reading from a simple answer that had none. Which part of my response even remotely made it sound emotional?

And what does anything have to do with not knowing or accepting the English language - whatever that means?

Mayo has been officially coaching since 2019.

He claims that he is ready to run his own team?

Wow - I did not realize he was only a coach for 4 years. What do you mean officially?

It's always good to be confident in your own abilities but I would definitely hesitate about making someone a HC with only 4 years coaching experience.

Then again we have see other sports where former players went from nothing to GM/HC with success so it's possible.

I'm not reading between any lines. I'm pointing out that something is textbook discrimination, and you're arguing against the dictionary. Again, this is a you problem. Laisse tomber.

Maybe he was a player/coach.

Vrabel took 8 years to land his job.

It does seem a little soon for Mayo to be considered as a head coach. The next increment might better be a stint as full-on stint as sole, legit DC somewhere. Likely, given the nepotism, he would have to do that elsewhere.

Neither Bill, nor Steve, nor anybody else involved has done anything wrong. But Bill has. Putting two of your kids on staff is a flagrantly dumb idea, one of several in recent years, tbh.

Nah - pretty sure you are the only one who has a problem with a decent rule trying to combat discrimination by pointing to non sensical stuff about white discrimination when almost all the decision makers in said situation are white.

Let me guess - you don't think there is discrimination in the league and fact there are very few minority people in positions of power is just a coincidence? Do you also think there were barely any black QBs until recently because they just started making them recently? That before 90s there were no minorty players capable of being a QB?

His argument is that racial discrimination is fine if it is intended to serve an end of which he approves. Your argument, with which I agree, is that racial discrimination is always wrong. Any implication that affirmative action is not a form and use of racial discrimnation is not "emotional": it is simply dishonest, and counterfactual. Ahmed, if you approve of racial discrimination under certain conditions, why not have the courage and honesty to say so.

He should have bowed out when he said he was going to. Instead, he's clowning himself.

Mayo may well get a HC job but I really doubt it will be Denver this year. Mostly because the risk of trying a 1st time HC immediately after you just had one fail spectacularly in Hackett is just too great.

I bet they go with a second(or more) time HC.

That's what he is looking for a DC title. He knows that to become a HC he needs to get in the queue of OCs & DCs that are already ahead of him. He's not going to get it here, so he's gone. Can't blame him. It's the same reason Flores left.
Technically Flores left to go straight from LB coach to HC. He didn't need to leave to become a DC somewhere else first.

Thought Flores was known to be the DC even though he did not have the title - no?
