It's for a variety of factors.I still don't understand why we think Mayo would be the next great coach. Not saying he couldn't be, but! Who knows how much responsibility he has for the defense. If you don't give Steve credit, why would you give Mayo credit?
Josh should hire Steve for the Raiders DC. Get him away from BB and maybe he would get some credit on his own. Then you can have Mayo as DC.
#1. He was always known as a very smart player on the field, he excelled at diagnosing plays
#2. He was a leader and captain on the team
#3. No player--not Tom Brady, not Bruschi, McCourty, etc.--devoted themselves to football (and New England) more than Mayo.
#4. No player spent more time studying football, the playbook, diagnosing offenses, relaying that info to teammates, than Mayo.
#5. His nickname in those years was Jerod Belichick.
#6. When you combine the package (ex-Pro Bowl player, super smart, well respected, very hard working, very knowledgeable about football), it's obvious we have a potential unicorn waiting to become a HC.
