J Bethel and T Mitchell are not guaranteed . S Wade and Bledsoe are making plays consistently .

I am hoping we are able to slot Hoyer into PS and elevate as and when needed .

That way we have 43 spots and 10 open spots.

Candidates for those 10 are

Hoyer(1)
Jordan/Nixon/Asiasi(2 out of 3)
Bledsoe,Shaun wade , Myles Bryant ,
T Mitchell, Justin bethel( 3 out of 5)
Mcgrone,Perkins ( 1 out of 2)
Carl Davis(1)
1 OT
Sam roberts/ Ray( 1 of them)

I think without Mitchell, your CB is REALLY young. If the Jones' are ready to step into major roles week 1, then it's not an issue, but I think they like Mitchell and he's played well enough to be the 4th guy in the Jason McCourty kind of role. Then if the kids outplay him so be it. And I think Bethel is 1A behind Slater as a ST mainstay. But these aren't hills I'd die on, neither would be a total shock if they were cut either, so fair enough.

Wade and Bledsoe are two of my favorites for those remaining spots as well.

I think Hoyer's contract this year makes it tougher to do what they did last year with him. He'd be taking a pretty massive pay cut, and may just choose to retire instead. I'm not ready to have Zappe be the only backup on the team yet... he needs polishing.

I feel like 14 in the secondary is high, 7 OL is low….but it could happen.
I consider Bethel, Davis and Schooler as ST only. I agree that 7 O-line is low. I expect that there will be lots of movement back and forth from the PS week to week.

Really good list here.

The only change I have is that I think LaBryan Ray is making the team and I'd substitute Mitchell for Bryant, but we're splitting hairs there.

Ray and Perkins had to be your last cuts. I'm trying to find a way to keep Hines on the O-line also, he's gaining momentum, we'll see how he looks this week.

I’d be very surprised if Belichick dumps Justin Bethel and Cody Davis. I guess possible with Davis, but would be surprised. To get them in, I’m guessing they’d cut Asiasi and one of Hambright/Russey with the hopes they all could make it to the practice squad and be game day elevations as needed (and injury replacements as guys get put on IR).

Cody Davis is 33. If cut/traded he has a dead cap charge of $500k and the team saves $1.8m.

Seems more probable than not he is cut - especially with Schooler and 'Lil emerging and the logjam at FS/SS.

Updated 53 with lots of tough decisions:

QB (3): Jones, Hoyer, Zappe
RB (4): D. Harris, Stevenson, Montgomery, Strong
WR (5): Agholor, Meyers, Parker, Bourne, Thornton
TE (3): Henry, Smith, Asiasi
OL (8): Brown, Strange, Andrews, Onwenu, Wynn, Cajuste, Herron, Hambright
DL (5): Godchaux, Guy, Barmore, Wise, Roberts
EDGE (4): Judon, Jennings, Uche, Perkins
LB (4): Bentley, McMillan, Wilson, Tavai
CB (6): Mills, Jo. Jones, Bryant, M. Jones, Wade, J. Jones
S (5): McCourty, Phillips, Dugger, Peppers, Bledsoe
ST (6): Folk, Bailey, Cardona, Slater, Bethel, Schooler
  • Hoyer's salary guarantees likely keep him from being cut to free up a spot temporarily.
  • Almost kept Humphrey, but I think he probably would clear waivers and the WR5 would probably be inactive anyway. Thornton obviously goes to IR after one day, then one of Humphrey/Wilkerson/Nixon/whoever gets elevated.
  • Ferentz goes on the PS to start to free up a much needed spot, but I consider him part of the OL depth even when he isn't on my 53.
  • Anderson and Carl Davis also go to the PS shadow roster for the DL. Even with those two cuts, I still can't find room for Ray.
  • It feels like a wasted spot keeping Perkins, but he has 3 years left on his contract and supposedly has potential. Would not be mad if Mitchell took his spot.
  • Tavai over McGrone. Maybe they keep both, but I highly doubt Tavai is cut based on the way BB seems to feel about him.
  • Gambling on talent (Wade) over experience (Mitchell) at cornerback. I think Mitchell's limitations are just as likely to be exposed as any potential inexperience by Wade or the Joneses.
  • Bledsoe is just gonna be inactive every single game with the safety depth we have, but I doubt he clears waivers.
  • Schooler takes Cody Davis' spot. I'm a big proponent of ST only players, but I've never been huge on Davis in the context of how much he gets paid and how old he's been during his time here. He probably stays on the PS regardless.

No way Ronnie Perkings get a spot on the 53 he's the 79th best player on this Team. Also Lawrence Guy is interesting I want us to move on from him and go with a younger Guy no pun intended.

I saw your Ferentz comments…who is your backup C?

no jack jones here? Marcus Jones > M Bryant at slot corner imo and depending on Jonathan Jones position i would like jack jones as an outside CB
Bryant's been their main PR. Since when does BB carry the whole rookie class. I don't think either Marcus or Jack will be high targets on final cutdown week. I'm not saying I'm thrilled with Bryant, but he's been decent here for 2 years. We'll see.

What happened to Wilkerson? I never heard of a specific injury moment?
But now with he and Thornton, I'm wondering if Humphrey is moving up the charts. Nixon seems like the guy that could step in at #6 while Tyquan and Kristen are hurt, but Lil'J could make a surprise appearance.

Where has Bryant been decent for 2 years ?

bryant got toast way too often as a slot CB for my taste. A no name Bills slot WR killed him

Of the current group, Bryant is the last person I want be in sticky coverage. He just doesn't have the physical ability. Hes too small to beat up receivers at the LoS and not quick or fast enough to stick with better than average WRs.

With that said he has good instincts, plays hard and will every now and then get his hands on the football.

Hes a bottom of the roster player. Them giving him PR ops is a lifeline for him to try and make the team.

he may be better suited for the S position but i would try him at the PS probably. Our returner look fine

Based on all the real NFL games I've seen Bryant play, I agree. However, that doesn't change the fact that the staff considers him a contender for the starting slot CB role, if not the frontrunner.

Still Ferentz, just from the practice squad.
Saying the obvious…if Andrews gets hurt…we might want someone who can hike and call line plays.

We should not take any solace in that. We need a "Jones" to be in that role.
