Game Day Thread Official Post Game Thread- Giants @ Pats

THIS IS OUR LIVE GAME DAY THREAD:

This is where we gather to follow things on Game Day. Obviously, emotions tend to be high so if anyone gets a little crazy, the use of the “Mute” button is encouraged on anyone who may be annoying to you to control your experience and to allow the moderators to also enjoy the game.

At the same time, please take a deep breath before over-reacting for the sake of making this a pleasant experience for everyone.

The Pats don't have any great WRs just a lot of very good ones...so yeah, if Thornton impresses, he can move up to #1.
I think Parker is a/the clear WR1, his issue in the past hasn't been talent, it has been durability.

Yet, Evan Lazar / Patriot.Com had an almost pornographic description of Thornton:

1. Powerful Play of the Game presented by Enel: WR Tyquan Thornton's 2-Yard Touchdown
Before we get too ahead of ourselves with the second-rounder, let's keep preseason football in context. Still, Thornton is a dynamic route-runner, and he flashed the tools we see daily in practice on Thursday night. His quickness at the line, deceptiveness at the top of the route, and explosiveness through the break are legit on top of his speed.
On his two-yard touchdown reception from Brian Hoyer, Thornton uses a stutter move to gain an inside release at the line. Then, he bursts upfield to get the corner on his back, uses a subtle head-jab fake to sell an inside break, and works through contact to cut outside for six. The little subtleties in his release package and route breaks excite you -- he is more than just a burner.

Great to read this.

Also, more WR talk here:

One thing caught my eye:

The newest addition of the group is Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who has come on in recent practices with multiple catches, and those performances carried over into the game. Humphrey's impressive size might make him look more like a tight end than receiver, but it gives the former Saint a unique trait within the group.
His fourth-quarter touchdown was a notable demonstration of what he's capable of. With the Giants coming on a blitz, quarterback Bailey Zappe stared down the pressure and lobbed a quick pass up to Humphrey who managed to use his size and length to secure the catch and score.

BB loves him some "WR with size" kind of players. It is what "he who shall not be named but now plays for Chicago and is on IR" was supposed to be for this team.

Should make for some interesting decisions on cut-down day.

One thing for sure is someone's binkie is gonna get cut.

No. Too many teams need WRs and they’re showing enough already. They’ll be among the better receivers on the market if cut.

I’d like to see more before deciding for sure but atm I’m feeling we would be okay with Parker - Bourne - TT as the top three and Wilk and Nixon behind them, if a strong trade market materializes for Agholor and / or Meyers.

one drawback is having both Wilkerson and Nixon on one year contracts. Sit down and talk extensions with each of them during the latter part of camp. Maybe even sooner. Offer them three to four years at a decent journeyman NFL WR salary. I think that would be a good deal for both sides. Lock in the back end of the WR corps at a reasonable price.

Would Humphrey have to clear waivers or does he have vet status to choose his destiny? Might be a PS candidate if he wouldn’t get claimed.
I thought Humphrey had a good game. Wilkerson was very good. Nixon okay but a little disappointing

I hated the refereeing, the "roughing the passer" call on Wieland especially. What the heck else is he supposed to do?
I love football but the NFL is making it hard to watch. Taunting calls are ridiculous. If you can't stand someone discussing your birthright or other disgusting remarks, go play marbles. The Wieland penalty was unbelievably ridiculous. Terrific play, textbook tackle, penalty. They are ruining the game.

I agree...that taunting call was pathetic. And the roughing the passer call was BS.

I didn’t see the sloppy, disorganized incompetent offense that can’t get out of its own way the Greg Bedard and crew promised me.

How hard is it to celebrate your plays away from the opposing players? Apparently too hard for some immature slow learners.
Right because how can we support participation trophies, no dodge ball, and everyone is a winner, if we allow people to be so considerate that they celebrate without first prioritizing the feelings if the gentleman who wasn’t as lucky on that play.

LB - McGrone was all over the place making plays along with Langi but I'm not sure Langi will make the 53 (most likely PS if possible). Wilson looked good as well...very fast. I don't remember seeing much of McMillian or Jennings. Uche played 23 snaps and was active...he still might only be a 3rd down guy though...we shall see.
I might need to rewatch because I didn’t really think McGrone showed anything special when I saw him. Conversely, McMillan was only out there in the 1st quarter and just for a dozen or so snaps but he popped out to me along with Wilson.

I'm not so sure about that. The only way we get significant trade value for Agholor is if the Patriots keep his salary. He might be even less of a trade asset than one of our back of the roster WR if he comes with that contract.

I think they'll just keep Agholor for the year and hope he gets more opportunities this time around. He wasn't bad last year, just misused/underutilized. Plus, he got held out last night with the other presumptive starters (although that could also be interpreted as keeping him healthy for a trade).
One thing gives the Pats leverage: they don’t have to trade or cut him. If a team wants him they can’t just wait for him to get cut. And he has the NFL resume to justify a desperate team wanting him, even at top of market salary. He would instantly transform the WR picture for a team like the Bears, and give the fans much more to get excited about than Harry or Nixon would.

I really like what we have at LB position now...so much faster and athletic. I think all McGrone needs is more time. He was away from football for over a year. I expect him to be pretty good though.

That's because they weren't running the new offense last night...except for a couple of plays.

He also had the green dot...so for a 1st game ever in the NFL...it wasn't too shabby.

Perkins was invisible I guess.. so most likely foxborough flu for him or prolly gets cut and lands in PS ...

Nixon will be claimed as soon as he is released.. GB .. raiders .. bears .

Nixon could potentially be our next Edelman .. I would want them to offer him an extension and if not possible to play, get him on foxborough flu and stash him on PUP till we swing a trade for Meyers /agholor.

I am not convinced Parker will last the Season. So better to have Meyers as he is durable.

Trade agholor and Wynn and with cap savings get a better OT if available in market .

We need to get tyquan the reps..

Jennings was real good yesterday.
Joejuan is cut, myles Bryant , Elliott , Humphrey, K Harris, Carl davis would be released and signed into PS if unclaimed. Sam roberts is on foxborough flu this season.
IIRC Perkins had a PBU when he was able to bat a ball down while rushing. Giants QB rolled to his left and Perkins was charging him in the open field. Pass was unloaded while Perkins was several yards away and he batted it down. I remember thinking it was a good demonstration of speed and athleticism.

Agree totally about Nixon. I’d consider extending both him and K-Dub (Hoyer’s nickname for Wilkerson). Locking them both in at a cheap salary would make Meyers expendable IMO. Meyers is more reliable but not enough more to justify being more expensive. Meyers is what he is, no upside while the young guys are not only cheaper they may still have lots of potential improvement remaining. Worth taking a shot on, as far as I’m concerned. But I’ll trust BB to make the best decisions for the team about that.

I have given Joejuan some lukewarm support on this thread. I officially apologize. He sucks. I thought the secondary presents some possibilities. Jack Jones looks to have potential. I thought Shaun Wade was much improved over last year and might provide some depth. Mitchell made plays. Jalen Elliott made some plays and caught my attention, hadn't heard anything about him before. Didn't see much from Bledsoe. LB's made some plays. Wilson, McMillan made some plays, McGrone seemed to get better as the game wore on (hard to evaluate the competition here). I loved the Wieland play. Hope he gets a chance to develop on the PS. Perkins is a mystery to me. Disappointing thus far. Would like to see a pass rush line of Jennings, Ray, Barmore, Roberts and Judon. Maybe a little Ekuale in there for Roberts. Disappointed in Henry Anderson. He was run on early. Not a Davis fan but he did some to be the only one making plays on the runs. Except for the refs and no replays (very disappointing) it was an interesting game for me. Zappe is crazy. Quick thinking, feisty but his deep throws were woeful. Talk about a wing and a prayer. You may call them back shoulder throws but I called them a wing and a prayer.

I thought Zappe look out of his league, with his height throwing sidearm won't make it past the LOS most days.

The Pats could not run a lick! Seems like every run was stuffed at the line.

Thorton looked promising.

I thought that Wilson and Jennings looked faster than any Pats LBS in a long time (maybe ever). I doubt Uche makes the team, give McGrone a longer look, but he seems destined to the PS this year.

Did I see Cajuste playing a little guard last night? He has some talent, maybe even enough that they can try and unload Wynn and his giant cap hit.

I think BB is over his head with the OC position, having two different guys call the plays sucked for the defense in the past and it will be awful for the offense. Offensive football is supposed to be a process where you run one play and then run a variation to keep the defense guessing or by setting them up for it. If you have two guys calling plays, then it is nobody's baby. This will be the ruin of this years team and might set Mac back a year or two. BB needed to hire an OC who should have kept and maybe modify the McDainels system, or come with his own new system. This trying to resurect the coaching careers of both Patricia and Judge instead of hiring an OC is going to be a disaster!

Do you think Nixon and or Wilkerson make the practice squad without getting claimed before?
I am sure McDaniels will pouch either free of charge. I really like Wilkerson he looks like a solid young WR also Nixon showed something last night. Hopefully we can move on from Agholor.

Good point about the Raiders, when I thought of teams that might take a flyer on those players, I initially thought of the Bears and the Cowboys, but it wouldn't shock me if the Raiders were also on that list.

No love for Cameron McGrone I liked what I saw him and Mack Wilson on the inside should make us solid there.

As long as there’s more than one team interested that helps get traction for a trade. More is better. But I’d rather keep the young guys and trade the vets. The youngsters are still developing, the vets are what they’ll be. If we are going with a youth movement let’s go all in on it.

I mean, when the media experts are saying our WR8 is a legit NFL WR depth doesn’t seem to be a big worry.
