Is McDaniels too conservative on offense?

I read Calvin Ridley would be interested in playing for New England.
If we sign Ridley and draft Williams from Alabama are woes are fixed.
Now the question is do we have the dollars and draft capital to do the same.

Our evaluation of top cornerbacks and wide receivers and tight ends is dicey . Better we stick to free agency and draft in 4th and 5th rounds . There is this Alabama speedster who can become our new slot receiver and then there is Moore from I believe western Michigan who ran 40m in less than 4.4 . We should gamble on those?

On Mac's pick 6 in the 1st qtr....

With the CB rotating off his WR responsibility without hesitation and beelining right to where the ball would inevitably end up, it's almost as if Miami knew the play Josh drew up.
Hmmmmmmm?
That’s just not how it works. You don’t draw up a play to throw to a specific receiver. You draw up a play to throw to where the coverage dictates. Had jones recognized the corner cheated he would have thrown it elsewhere and created a big play.
DBs gamble based upon route combinations and instinct, not because “they know the play call”

I respectfully disagree the tighter window makes it easier for disaster to happen on a trick play. This is where I agree with the run plays everyone knows is coming.
For me it’s the fact you have the best rated deep passer in Sec history and everyone he throws a deep ball people ooh and aww over it but we have the kid throwing 4 to 8 yard passes to receivers who aren’t quick or especially fast and tell the receiver go get the extra.
That drives me crazy. What is the thought process here that Mac sees the field so fast to let the ball rip immediately? Death by a thousand paper cuts to the defense?
I love Mcdaniels and I think he is a excellent coach and game planner but the offensive coordinators main job is to call the right play in the right situation and I think this is where he misses the mark.
He has had a number of Ints trying to throw deep.
You can’t base your evaluation of your rookie qb on how well he throw to wide open receivers no one could cover in college.
He has an issue throwing deep into coverage. That’s not a surprise. But he almost never saw the issue at Alabama.

There are so many issues with this team. One of them is the play calling for sure. Maybe they are still limiting the play book for Mac and this offense making it easier for defenses to see what is coming. I believe that was brought up a while back. When you run the same damn plays it makes is easier for better prepared teams to defend it. Colts and Phins come to mind. Colts had an extra week to prepare. Is this play calling or the play book or Mac still being too green to call off a play and make the right change at the LOS? You tell me!

That being said, this is it on Saturday night. Can't be conservative here. Go for it on 4th when appropriate. Chuck a few DPI "Joe Flacco" specials down the field. Run the last 4 trick plays they haven't used this season. Fake a punt. Let Fecking Go!

I agree we need more out of those outside receivers but I don’t think we are going to get it. Those guys are who they are no matter what contract they were given. Until we get a real number one option on offense Agholor and Bourne will never be able to draw any real consideration on the outsides from any defensive coordinator.

I think Bourne can play a vital role in their offense as the guy Jones goes to when he’s in trouble, as he gets open quickly and he’s a smart WR, but I have no confidence in Agholor. I do think they can find a veteran receiver who can widen the field, and draft a receiver to stretch the field vertically, but Belichick needs to let some one else make that pick as he sucks at drafting receivers. If they can fill those two roles then Agholor may be workable as a second option deep threat, but he has shown no ability to get open against good cornerbacks, and has to have a good match up to be effective.

I think there's enough weapons with the exception that there is no third down go-to guy.

Bolden/Meyers/Henry/Bourne are nice pieces, but none is or will be an Edelman/Welker/White/Kevin Faulk type of binkie for Mac. Maybe White will come back, but how old is he?

There must be some Adam Humphries (ok I know people hate him, but someone like him) that you can pull off the scrap heap to maybe fill this role for an affordable cap.

The offense will look completely different if they find this someone.

Maybe we get Nelson to rework his deal.
I’m hoping his contract had alot of incentives he needed to hit.
Paying him more than 4 million is a ski mask type robbery of Robert Kraft.

Humphries was essentially a slot guy, and I think Bourne can fill that role. It’s possible that Wilkerson could fill the role of the receiver that widens the field, as Jabar Gaffney once did for Brady, which would mean that they need to find a true deep threat that can beat top corners and force teams to respect them downfield. If they can fill that role they will have the depth to make the receivers a respectable unit. Meyers is a good possession receiver, and he can help make teams respect them horizontally, and Agholor is good depth as a downfield receiver, but grossly overpaid as a #1 WR, which he simply isn’t.Jones may be able to develop into a QB who can turn average receivers into better players, as Brady was always able to do, but that’s a few years off, for winning now they need to upgrade their weapons for him to maximize their passing game.

Im not sure how is deal is structured but I’m certain that there are people here who know the parameters of it. I agree that he is overpaid and incapable of being a true # 1.

Teams have caught up to mac and are playing every one close to the line of scrimmage. Let mac quick pass like in training camp. Dink and dunk.
Teams are crowding the line of scrimmage...so the solution is to throw close to the line of scrimmage instead of run?

While I don't think this Pats team has the best matchups to consistently work the mid and deep third of the field that's the only way the defense can be forced to back off (even hitting a couple screens or 5 yd slants/outs for bigger gains off missed tackles won't back off a scheme of 8-9 in the box).

I may agree that the Pats do need to "force" the opposition into different looks, but given those defensive schemes are specifically to counter BOTH run and short passing game, "dink and dunk" isn't necessarily the best countermove.

Play action to the middle and deep third in the early (and obviously has to be executed - Bourne, Henry and Agholor are the best of what the Pats have for that approach) series to me would be the only method to get the defense to fall back into deeper schemes.

Don't know, was it all the times Brady was here and we were winning superbowls?

Bourne has too many goof ups and a history of poor hands. He's a nice player, but too inconsistent for that role IMO.

More of a run after the catch guy.

Patriots only had 10 dropped passes all year, which is 2nd best in the NFL. Not sure dropped passes was an issue.

Wow , thats an interesting fact , I did think that Myers and Bourne have pretty safe hands (mind you I did not read if this incl all recvrs and backs )

In SF he was a dropped pass machine.

Maybe he cleaned it up with more targets.

Disagree on this, I thought Bourne was their best receiver this season.
