Cam Released

Mac was going to start eventually. The question was more of a when? Cam was always a short term marriage.

Cam was insurance if Mac Jones wasn't ready to start right away and needed time. But once it became clear that the kid was ready to play, there was no use for the team to go with cam.

Also, the offense is very limited with cam to mask his weakness throwing the ball. Whereas with Mac Jones they can open the playbook more and play the style they want to play.
I am not thrilled with Hoyer backing up Mac.

No huddle offense vs Washington in Mac’s FIRST NFL preseason game and they marched right on down the field to score a TD. Mac was 8 of 9 or something crazy like that. First time Mac did it, and it succeeded. I don’t think we ran the hurry up (no huddle, whatever you wanna call it) all year last year. Offense just looked different, even in game 1.

I agree with how it looked, but just to pick nits, they kicked a field goal on that drive.

The playbook was pretty limited with Cam, it was basically an RPO with a simple concept play here and there that didn't ask Cam to read what the defense was giving him. And it was pretty telling that Cam pretty much didn't run no huddles.
It didn't take much to see that as the year went on, and defensive coordinators adjusted to what the Patriots did on offense the first couple weeks, that they simply had to change the look after the Pats lined up.

Remember how many timeouts the team took in the first half last year that they never took before? That was because what was called in the huddle was going to fail miserably, but there either wasn't time left or Cam wasn't either empowered, or didn't have enough knowledge of the playbook, to change at the line.

This is both on the Patriots and Cam himself. The Perkins-Ernhardt offense isn't really built for an improviser QB, but in Cam's case, it can be modified to a 1-2 read style as well (more RPO-ish). That modification does require the QB to be able to read the D and know the playbook enough to make the protection call swap and the new play wrinkle.

So while the Ninkovich info does damn Cam, it does the same to the Pats who should've seen that his history was as a first read then improvise QB who didn't have the same running explosiveness nor arm cannon anymore.

as the primary back up? not thrilled either ...

But... I want him on the roster ... qb3/player-coach whatever you want to call it... there's a lot of valuable knowledge in that noggin of his that will be useful as the season progresses...

Teams looking at Cam now, “sh1+, if we bring in Cam, we need to bring in a tutor too?”
Teams really aren't looking at Cam though, are they? he had no offers or tryouts in the off season as far as I can remember...

Hoyer only has to last a couple months to Jarret Stidham comes back. When it comes to running the Josh McDaniels offense - Hoyer can make the intermediate throws and adjustments needed to at least stay close in games. Cam will play you out of them unless you revamp/limit your offense to a TEBOW style.

Staff is going to be much more comfortable with Stidham/Hoyer.. I could see us picking up another pocket passer type down the line if something bad happens to Mac Jones - like bringing Philip Rivers in.. I certainly would take retired Rivers over current Cam..

Don't forget they did Garrett Gilbert to the practice squad, fwiw...

Rivers isn't really an option though, imo... Let someone else go one and done with him

Haven't bothered to go through 46 pages but it's quite impressive how the majority of the forum wanted no part of Cam; yet this thread continues strong almost a week after his release and on the eve of the season opener.

Because it's morphed into a new title: "Who should backup Mac Jones?"

Cam Newton hasn’t said much since being cut by the Patriots eight days ago. On Instagram, Newton has said that, come Friday, he’ll have something to say.

Newton apparently does a periodic video dubbed “Funky Friday.” He has posted on Wednesday a video teasing the next installment.

“On this week’s Funky Friday, I have a lot of things that I need to get off my chest,” Newton said. “This is not a retirement speech, and I have a lot of football still in me.”

Cam Newton promises to get "a lot of things" off his chest, but that it won't be a retirement speech - ProFootballTalk

Does he really have a lot of football left in him though?

Certainly not GOOD football.

I doubt it. The Pats have done an all smear campaign on him since he was released. I think he comes out swinging. He has nothing to lose. He isn't getting a job this year.
Ninkovich's comment could definitely come across that way but other than him I can't think of any other Patriots mouthpieces that badmouthed him?

My god, I must see this happen.

I'll be back here to point my finger in the face of every poster here that inferred I'm racist, or a Brady nut hugger, for calling Cam a phony, terrible leader and laughing at Bill for re-signing him. It's going to be glorious...imagine if he says something critical about The Omniscient One.
Oh. It's gonna happen. You can bet on it.
Get your popcorn ready.

Lol team Bill will get real ugly.

It's been non stop from criticism for his vax status to how he was outperformed all preseason to Mac teaching him the playbook.

The main debate has been literally is Cam too dumb and poor of a leader to not get vaxed forcing the Pats to release him vs. Cam was too dumb to learn the playbook and Mac outperformed him all TC.

I mean if you were Cam how would you feel? Bill trotted him out like he was Qb1 all off-season and only gave him 2 drives in the preseason games while Jones was showcased. They also never had him run either. I think Cam is going scorched earth on Friday.

Only your last paragraph is about the Patriots. The first two are his grievances against the media or patsfans posters.

I can see him complaining he didn’t get enough chances to show his skills, but that also opens the door to the argument that he wasn’t available for most of a week because he was an idiot.

I expect Cam to make a statement in his font that says he still has a lot of football left and no one should doubt him, yadda, yadda, yadda.
