BB loves him some Cam Newton

Belichick seems to disagree. Let's see who turns out to be correct
you're skipping some ergos, evidently for the sake of ego.

I don't think that Belichick believes that 8 passing TDs - and 20 QB-involved TDs total - is optimal production from the position.
However, I also think that what he says is pretty straightforward, to wit, nobody's taken the job from Cam. That leaves open the possibility of someone taking it in training camp. It leaves open the possibility of Cam playing throughout 2021, and, at the outside, being brought back in 22 as the starter.

All that BB has said is that the default starting QB is Cam, until/unless somebody takes the job from him. That does not mean that he's satisfied with Cam's play in 2020, the conclusion you appear to be drawing.

.............................play him when he's the best option, not before.

Yes. Play him when and if it's best for the team and that means when it's best for Jones and everybody else.

I should add, that's barring an emergency of course.

Bill does not think Cam is the future or even the right QB to take them anywhere. If he does think that maybe its time for him to hit the retirement road. I just think he is cheap and can take the beating while the team is built for the next guy.

That's really scummy

I don't CARE about TD passes per se. Judging a QB like Newton strictly by his passing is more of a sign of your lack of imagination than in his execution of the offense. This is an offense that is heavily optimized for the rushing attack. We can afford to treat our passing game as our change-up rather than our fastball, if you can stand the mixed metaphor.

I'm gonna care a lot more about the scoreboard and Cam's ability to be a field general for a run first offense than an arbitrary concern about only one aspect of Cam's game.
Yeah, so tell me when was the last time a QB that was better at running than passing won the superbowl? Sorry its not 1975, you have to pass well to win now. He doesn't. The rest of the team is not good enough to carry a 27th ranked QB to a superbowl.

"Five letters here just for everybody out there in Patriots QB-land: R-E-L-A-X"

Our strategy for 2021 is to have a run heavy offense, play good defense and excel at special teams!

bb’s goal appears to be to take as much pressure off the qb position as possible. Bb just needs his qb to not turn the ball over and make a few plays a game and we will succeed!

Which is different than most years where most of the pressure went to the QB and that is not uncommon. The Qb is the most important position on the field and if has a very small amount of responsibility, that has not been how teams have won superbowls. So while this might be a right now thing because that is where we are, I am not sure long term that is an answer to consistently winning.

I agree with you 100 percent.

this is the strategy that worked when Brady first started and because Brady was able to execute what was needed, the strategy worked perfectly.

But Brady was able to throw the lights out in a game and win. See 2003 superbowl, the team will still need that, even with a good run game. We were a run first play great defense team in 2003, and in the superbowl we could not stop the other side and Brady had to go into throw every down man to win the game. You still need that, but it might be a bit before we have that part of the offense.

absolutely. In the early days brady saw a lot of 7 or 8 in the box, much easier to throw against those defenses, especially with play action, and defenses having to respect Dillion!

Yeah, so tell me when was the last time a QB that was better at running than passing won the superbowl?
Almost irrelevant. Very few teams even try running QBs and the teams that do tend to be desperate and/or poorly run. This generates something of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Belichick drafted a quarterback in the first round. How is that proof of disagreement with the premise?

Brady had already won 2 Super Bowls before Dillon arrived on the scene.

People have retconned Brady’s 2001 season to him being some sidecar and not someone who led multiple game winning drives with his arm at the end of games.

He could have easily replaced Newton with Brissett or Fitzpatrick

Instead he took a QB in the first round. The question thus remains the same.

He could have taken Jones in the first round and replaced Newton with a different veteran. This is the part you'rre refusing to comprehend.

I'm not having any comprehension problem here.

So we have a Bleacher Report article that is based on an opinion from one of the talking heads at espn, and PatsFans forum members come to the conclusion that 'Belichick loves Newton', and the first round draft pick will sit for the entire year.

Question: if BB is indeed so enamored by Cam (as some have been posturing here for awhile now), then why did he utilize his one and only first round draft pick on another player at the same position?
He only paid Cam one million dollars last year and had a second year player in Stidham who we all thought was our next QB and he never started him. The chances of Jones starting as a rookie are pretty much nil.

Well no, it is relevant because trying to do something complete opposite of how to win in this league is not the way to be successful. Sometimes you have to do things based on what you have, that is what the pats will be doing early on, not because BB thinks its the best way. The best way won 6 superbowls and the most wins in NFL history in a two decade period.
