2021 NFL Free Agency/Trade News & Discussion: April Edition

Just over two weeks to go until the draft and I still have no idea what the Pats are going to do on day 1 despite the various posts on the subject

they are going to draft a DB projected to go in the 6th Round from a small school in the second round and he is going to suck.

Now fields stinks. Lol. Im
Not going to feed the troll any more. Have a great day.

You’re pumping your guy. Not every pats fan loves fields. Some do some don’t. Just like mac. I hope we don’t draft him.

In other news, the AZ Cardinals signed UFA RB James Conner from Sh!tsdirt...Details unknown...Didn't seem that the Squealers made much of an effort to retain his services...

I'm reading 1 year, 1.25 mill. Really suprised they wouldnt want him back at that , not durable enough to be a feature back but at the worst he's great as a change of pace back / dual threat.

Yeah if those numbers are accurate that should not have been a deal-breaker...Strange...Wonder if they'll consider Najee Harris or Travis Etienne with their 1st-rounder now, though they should still probably grab the best available OLman with it, such as Christian Darrisaw or Teven Jenkins...

With Conner it could simply come down to inconsistency and the Steelers wanting to invest in a higher upside RB in the draft. The small contract shows he didn’t have much of a market: the Steelers weren’t interested in bringing him back, and only the Dolphins were rumored as possible suitors before he landed with the Cardinals.

It's interesting because the Steelers were dead last in yards per carry at 3.6, but Connor got them 4.3. It seems like he wasn't the problem, and for a million you'd think they'd keep him around. Maybe he wanted assurances that he'd be a feature back, and the Steelers wouldn't promise that due to his durability.

You left out the part where fans will defend the pick and say give it time and he will be a probowler.

No one automatically assumes a 2nd round pick is going to be a pro bowler. And "give it time" is a general philosophy when evaluating the unknown. I don't understand why that's seen as some kind of slight against people who don't hate something right away.

Because you can pretty much tell about certain players, particularly at certain positions, and the whole "gotta wait" notion is far less applicable than homers (of all teams, not just this one) try to argue it to be.

And teams know this, too, and they show it with their cuts.

Before I reply to the whole thing, can you clarify this portion? It's not making an immediate connection in my head.

Sure...

Teams routinely cut draft picks in years one and two. They tend to be lower round draft picks much more than those picked higher, but the same dynamics still apply.

Ah, I see, thank you for the clarification. I'll try to clarify my point as well, because I don't want to come across as saying I believe some picks are better just because we don't know yet. I think it's fair to say that this board would be a LOT more drab and empty if every discussion boiled down to, "Well, we can't see the future, so why debate it?" I don't want that.

What I was trying to combat is the idea that the general philosophy of "give it time" (or as I would classify it, "wait for more information") is a failing of the person arguing it. It can take some naive forms (assuming picks or players from other sources are automatically going to work out is naivety in my mind), but in general I assume that teams are working with a set of information I don't have access to, and so I wait until I can at least see a player in training camp/pre season before declaring it a bad pick. It's kind of a similar mindset that we saw in the Edelman retirement thread, where some posters were talking about how cold and callous a move it was to cut a team legend for a failed physical. Waiting just a few more minutes provided more information and context, where it appears there's a medical benefit he is now eligible for that he wouldn't have been if he'd retired while still under contract. It doesn't invalidate their opinions based on the information they had, but it does show a benefit of waiting for all the facts to come in before being outraged.

It's why I try to frame player additions (from the draft or otherwise) as adding competition to a role or position group, rather than saying something like, "This player is now our top receiver" (example). It frames it, IMO, in a way that leaves some wiggle room for the unknown. Saying a player is a bad pick is a valid opinion, and as you say may turn out to be right more often than not (draft picks definitely skew towards failure on average), but I choose to give it time, and I don't feel that's a bad way to approach it for me personally.

The Clowney to Cleveland signing is now official..."Up to $10M" which means maybe 1/2 or 2/3 is guaranteed? No details yet from Spotrac...

He was the best unsigned ED until now...I still want a vet here for the opposite side of Judon, in case Wino & especially Jennings continue to suck...The next names in Bill's rolodex should be Ryan Kerrigan, Justin Houston & Everson Griffen...

Would you prefer that, or a Jones or Casey to thicken the middle?

Also, they're going to make tough cuts now on the DL, I think. I'm not surprised they didn't get Clowney on a 1-year deal. They've got to protect TWO cornerbacks and want flexibility in case a QB opportunity pops up (yep, I still think BB wants Jimmy).
