Trade up now or wait

I would try and trade into the top 10 and draft Patrick Surtain II. Other than Lawrence, there is no other QB worth trading up for IMO. I like Mac Jones but don't trust him. Lance is a project and if he were to fall to #15, then i would take him, but I'm not trading up for a project (and I like him). Wilson just became a starter is his last year so I see Trubisky written all over him. Lastly, I don't see Fields' talents transferring well to the NFL for some reason. Yes, we need a future franchise QB, but these guy are not it

Belichick has said that he might be comfortable with trading ahead of the draft, but many teams aren't.
I’m pretty sure both Philly or LA Rams traded up early (before draft day) when they drafted Wentz and Goff in 2016.

I disagree that no other QB is worth trading up for besides Lawrence. You have to be aware of the situation. Next year is a very poor year for QBs. ZERO QBs at the level of the top 5 from 2021 and the top QBs in the 2020 draft. If you are going to get your franchise QB, THIS is the year you do it. PLUS, the fact they gave Cam a ONE year contract, pretty much tells you where they are at.

We went almost 30 years without having to worry about our QB position (Bledsoe & Brady). We discovered last year, what it’s like NOT having a QB. We’ve seen teams, for years, in the same situation we find ourselves now, and always knew those teams were beatable because of their crappy QB. This team can’t wait any longer to find out their identity at QB. It’s the one MAJOR question mark this team has, they don’t have their franchise QB in waiting. Draft one at 15 or higher.

The reality is that you need to do business as business is being done. These QBs go early and if you want one you will need to overdraft and probably overpay. If you think Lance is worthy of the 15th pick, you should also probably be willing to trade up to get him. If you take a QB at 15, you should think that he has franchise potential, so the decision is simply about where you think you can snag him rather than if he is worth the spot.

The top 4 QBs are likely going in the first 6-8 picks. Jones could also go soon after. If they really like one of these guys they should all out to get him. There is no guarantee they can pull off a trade with Carolina, Denver, SF, Washington and Chicago also in the hunt (and possibly also Pittsburgh, NO etc) but I'd like to see them be aggressive if they identify a guy.

The slight issue I see is with the possible trade down candidates - Miami, Atlanta, Cincy, Philly. I think they would rather drop down a few spots to 8 or 9 (Carolina/Denver), where they can probably still pick up the guy they were focusing on e.g. top WR or OT. Dropping to 15 makes that a little dicey and I think just outside the true blue chippers.

i think there's other QBs worth trading up for........trading back up into the late first or up into the early 2nd for

lance has a higher potential ceiling and a lower potential floor than some of the guys below him......

not a mac jones fan per se, but he's safer

guys like mond/mills/newman, along with jones, ARE worth trading up for, at some point, and really aren't huge drops from QB3 & QB4

Putting the pieces together:

jacksonville - qb lawrence
Jets - if they were smart, they would take Sewell and give darnold a shot in lafleur’s wide zone blocking scheme. But since it is the Jets, they take Wilson!
Miami - should take d smith, but will probably take chase!
Atlanta - everybody thinks they should take a qb, but will take Pitt’s.
Bengals - they need to protect burrows. Sewell
Philly - they need receiver help d smith.
Detroit - parsons is the best defender in this draft.
carolina - qb fields
Denver - they desperately need a right tackle - darrisaw.
Dallas - secondary help for them - surtain
Giants - they need receiver help - waddle
San Fran - qb lance
Chargers - secondary help as well - farley
Vikings - de Rousseau
Patriots - Mac Jones?

One thing to remember about trading up: it doesn't make the player taken any better than he would be at a later pick (hi, Duke Dawson!), just more expensive.

You might get your way if the Pats trade up to 4. I fully expect Lawrence and Wilson to go 1st and 2nd. I know I got caught up with the Mac Jones hype (though it would be hilarious if the Falcons reached on him at 4th overall, I’ve already seen Falcons fans online puking at the thought of it). I can see the Panthers being aggressive and trading up for 3 with the Dolphins, and drafting Trey Lance in that spot. That leaves Justin Fields at 4.

I think the sooner a trade is done the better. ...

I think it is safer to wait and see what is on the board before trading up....and let's not get too optimistic about how far the Patriots will trade up:

When predicting what the Patriots will do, rest assured that they will not trade away a 2 or a 3 this year to move up. There is no way that the Patriots go into the second or third round with no picks; they never like to sit on their hands like that. So right now, the best they could offer would be a 4 or a 6. However I could see them trading back at 15 to pick up another 3 and then later trading up with that 3.

The Patriots hate to go into a draft with a gap-tooth selection, i.e. rounds with no picks. They hate it so much that they will eagerly trade back to fill the gaps. They have no gaps this year and three 4's so the best you will see is using an extra 4.

It is hard to predict what the Patriots will do on draft day, but one thing you can rest assured of is that they will not go into a draft with no 2'd or 3'd round picks.

I doubt throwing in a 4th round pick will be enough to entice a team to take a 11-12 pick drop in the first round. The Patriots trading away 2nd and/or 3rd rounders to move up would be unlike them but this has already been an offseason that has defied convention so who knows. They’ve had the luxury of a franchise quarterback for decades so there is a different level of urgency with this draft I would imagine. He also has the option of trading future draft picks as needed.

The key is going to be if BB is in love with any of the top QB prospects or not. If he thinks someone outside the first round will be enough for him then he may just be content to sit at 15 and take the best available player regardless of position.

All eyes will be on the niners I still say it’s Jimmy G

Here's a proposal in CBS Sports for the Pats moving up to get Lawrence:

Potential offer: QB Jarrett Stidham, CB Stephon Gilmore, 2021 first (No. 15), 2022 first, 2023 first, 2021 second (No. 46), 2022 second, 2023 second, 2022 third

Do you do this?

Much as I’d love that to be true, I don’t see it happening. It’s contingent on the Niners getting a replacement QB that they feel is a better starting option than Jimmy. Watson would be a clear upgrade for them but it looks like he may not be dealt any time soon. The Packers and Seahawks are holding onto their guys as well. That leaves the Jets trading Darnold, if that’s even a plan for the Niners.

You’d have to think they’re bluffing, considering they can’t sustain their cap situation where it’s at with Jimmy’s contract, and the Niners have already gone on record that they’re not interested in restructuring or extending his contract (as it would result in a cap hit beyond this season). I’m sure they want to trade or cut him but have to get their replacement first, and I’m not sure where it’s coming from. Only other option would be for them to get one of the rookie QB’s that we would like for ourselves, and that’s not an ideal scenario either.

Someone on this board said it best earlier: the management on this team is paid good money to worry about this sort of stuff so there’s no point in me worrying about it. I want to believe the Jimmy speculation is more than just rumor mill fodder, but we’ll have to wait and see.

With Miami, they signed Fuller, wonder if they take a Wr with that pick or take Sewell or possibly trade back.

I've been hearing if we want Mac Jones, we need to trade up, he's not going to be there at 15.

What does project mean? Whomever they draft will sit on the bench for the year.

I do this then turn around and trade the #1, move down to 4 and get all the picks back.

They went to 1 and 2 though if I am not mistaken. So they knew they were going to get their guy. I doubt Jags or Jets (not to us at least) will trade 1 or 2. We won't trade before the draft for a lower pick. We might agree before the draft with the condition that said player or players are still available.
