Its very clear we are drafting a QB. It’s also very likely we are trading up to do it.
I want that QB to be Justin Fields. Probably need to go to 4 to be sure.
Does it make more sense to do it early or wait until draft day? Will the price go up or down?
I think BB needs to approach this like he did Free Agency. He had a plan, he new what he needed, and he went out and got it right away.
I think he should be talking trades now up to 4th or 5th. One of the top 4 will be there at 5 so unless you hate one and need to go up higher your in position at 5, and of course you are at 4. Bb should be having long talks with Atlanta and Cincy and if the price is acceptable do it now.

You can't be passive here. If you wait too long, the type of QB BB wants may well be gone.

Absolutely agree. Lay the groundwork now with ATL/CIN; then pull the trigger on 4/29.

And it seems like the price will only go up on draft day as those teams settle on the player they would take with that pick, a guy they expect to be a cornerstone.

I'm trying to think of examples of teams trading up prior to draft day, and I'm drawing a blank. There's always chatter about the #1 pick because as the team trading for it you know your guy will be there guaranteed. But I can't think of any times it's actually been done prior to the day of. For picks further down, like 4, the risk goes way up. What if the only guy they really like is Fields, so they trade a boatload to move up to 4, and then Fields goes to the Jets at 2?

The jets did it for Darnold. Pretty sure skins did it for RG III AND OUT

If fields goes at 2 they take Wilson.
They have to draft a QB so going to 4 or 5 gives them one of the top 4. If you only like 3 of them then you probably have to go to 4 with atl.

You don't trade up now unless you have a specific player in mind AND you know he's going to be there in the spot you trade up to. If you trade to 4 or 5, Lawrence, Fields, and Wilson can go 1, 2, and 3 and then you're stuck with a QB you don't rate as highly like Lance (Miami could easily trade out of 3 to another QB needy team). If BB is desperate to trade up for a QB, then it's better get 3 from Miami. You are then assured of Fields or Wilson.

You might get your way if the Pats trade up to 4. I fully expect Lawrence and Wilson to go 1st and 2nd. I know I got caught up with the Mac Jones hype (though it would be hilarious if the Falcons reached on him at 4th overall, I’ve already seen Falcons fans online puking at the thought of it). I can see the Panthers being aggressive and trading up for 3 with the Dolphins, and drafting Trey Lance in that spot. That leaves Justin Fields at 4.

I think the sooner a trade is done the better. Because if someone does trade into Miami’s spot at 3rd overall, that’s going to make the 4th spot even more contested for than it is because it’ll be the last chance at one of the top 4 until the next drop, and you can’t rule out Detroit, Denver, or San Francisco looking to take a QB. If the Pats can pull off a trade now they’ll be sitting pretty with their choice of QB. The question is if they can compel Atlanta to make a trade now rather than use their leverage to wait for better offers on draft day.

Target the guy and trade whatever you need to to get him.
Agreed

I am assuming Lance is fine. I mean you have to have a QB. If you can’t trade up to guarantee one of 3 then you guarantee one of 4. No chance QBs go 1,2,3. There are too many good players and too many team needs for that to happen.

It’s happened before in 1999 when Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, and Akili Smith were gone with the first three picks.

He trades for a particular player IMO. Gotta know he’ll be there. Bill will wait.
All 4 are miles better than anything we have or anything else we can get. Sleeping on it and getting no one would be the worst plan.

I didn’t mean ever, I meant this year.

Unless Bill has a specific QB in mind, I would say no until the draft plays out. I get the feeling the Jets and Falcons will pass up on QBs, so if that happens Bill can trade up with Cincinnatti and hop in front of Carolina who is desperate for a QB.

Not sure what he'll do but I'd wait and see how the draft is going and get an idea exactly how far you need to trade up. That is IF Bill likes one of the top guys, we don't even know if BB likes any of them after Lawrence goes enough to do a trade up.

Won’t happen if the order stays as is but trades can change the outlook. Really hinges on whether Miami deals out of their spot or stays put.
