Player Signing RapSheet: Agholor to Pats

I like what I'm seeing

That was some very impressive route running, along with the speed and athleticism to make him pay after the setup. Love it.

Corey Davis got identical money (over an additional, third year), but I would argue has a more limited ceiling. Davis is a really good, predictable ‘X’, but he doesn’t have the athleticism or top-end speed to threaten a defense deep.

Agholar, on the other hand, has a higher ceiling, is more athletic, better speed, and can be a true deep threat. He’s also viable over the middle and from the slot as well. A lot more potential there for sure, and most likely a better fit for what the Pats need (so long as he can consistently and reliably catch the ball).

Maybe I’m mistaken, but I think the team is envisioning him being the next Deion Branch in his prime. That would certainly fit this offense if he can catch the ball. So far unfortunately he also seems to have Branch’s brittleness.

Depending on the money I don’t hate it.
What about now?

My fear that Billy would Overpay for Mediocrity has come true, naturally.

Curtis Samuel & Corey Davis >>>>>>>>>>>>> Agholor & Kenny Bourne.

$13 mill a year I don’t love it. Especially considering Corey Davis got the same thing and I think he’s a much better receiver.

I’d rather have Agholor than Davis. Also, you can’t say Samuel and Davis >>>>> when Samuel hasn’t even signed with anyone yet and you don’t know how much money he’s going to get.

They're all different players.

Samuel is a piece you can play anywhere (other than as a pure outside the numbers guy). He can play out of the slot and the backfield.

Davis is a pure 'X', who's really good and reliable, a solid signing absolutely, but is basically at his ceiling and not a true deep threat.

Bourne is a technician who's not terribly athletically impressive but has exceptionally good feet and route-running.

Agholor is a bit of an enigma. In PHI he played more of a slot role akin to Jordan Matthews or Avant. When he went to LV, he was a deep-threat playing the 'Z', working deep and across the field.

Bourne is a safe option and is a good signing, absolutely.

Agholor is definitely higher risk (if only because of his drops), but I also think he has a higher ceiling and offers more of what the Pats need right now (athleticism, speed, and deep-threat potential ... not to mention some slot / RAC / ball-in-his-hands potential).

I'd still love to see Samuel here, and while Davis is a darn good player who I wouldn't have been disappointed with, I do think Agholor fills a bit more of a need (speed and a threat down the field).

Davis (to this point in his career) is certainly a more consistent receiver than Agholor, but I'm not sure he's necessarily a "better" receiver. I would argue Agholor has a higher ceiling and provides speed / threatens the deep part of the field in ways Davis doesn't.

Davis is a very good, rock-solid 'X', with great hands and physicality. But he isn't a true deep threat. I wouldn't have been disappointed with Davis at all, and I think he's a very good receiver. But the Pats hopefully will benefit more from Agholor's skill-set than Davis' right now.

0-6 isn't great regardless - Deion Branch was a solid player but Brady had a lot to do with that
Branch had the same per-game stats in SEA as he did here.

Agholor is a fierce down-the-field blocker and has played multiple positions at WR.

For good or bad, that matters tremendously to BB and Josh.

I wasn't aware of this. Very good information and certainly informs the decision a bit more. Love to hear it.

Yea if you google Agholor blocking there are quotes from Reich and Petersen praising him for it. Plus my Iggles buddy said he was really good at it. The prick pointed out some block he made on Chung in the SB that sprung LG for a big gain.

I don’t love Agholor but I’m happy they upgraded the position. I think they may have overpaid a little bit but I’d guess his ability to play in the slot and outside is what sold them over Davis who’s strictly an outside guy.

Exactly. Just gotta see the structure of these deals and understand what's real.

I think we will learn the Agholor deal is a lot more reasonable.
Has to be, and I hope they put something in there for drops as well. Tape is ugly. Please mute the video.

wonder what changed with the Raiders? had some amazing plays in 2020

Agholor is a poor man’s Diggs. (Hands not as great & route running not as precise). BUT very good routes, deceptive speed, shifty, good hands, field- stretcher & passion for the game. A DOG!

I was a big proponent of Corey Davis but now that the pats have two quality TEs I think a field stretcher compliments them more. Henry news today made the Agholor signing IMO.

It's also worth noting what he did with Carr is impressive considering these are Carr's deep passing numbers from 2016-2020:

2020 21st % of passes 20+ yards 13th comp pct.
2019 30th 20+ yards, 21st comp pct.
2018 33rd 20+ yards, 5th comp pct.
2017 16th 20+ yards, 25th comp pct.
2016 29th 20+ yards, 9th comp pct.

Had the 2nd most 20+ yard receiving TDs with an Alex Smith style QB. He was also productive with Ruggs out of the lineup.
