Aaron Rodgers GOAT Talk Again

Once again the stupid talk is heating up because Aaron Rodgers is off to a 4-0 start and Brady is 43 and well over the hill. Funny, but I didn't hear how great Brady was when, with 3 rings already on his fingers, he started out 2007 at 18-0. He had to take it to the incredible level of 9 AFC titles and 6 SB rings just to pass Joe Montana, the former GOAT.

That brings up my questions.
1 - When did looking good become the standard of greatness over winning?
2 - When did clutch performances at key times take second fiddle to stats?
3 - How can people ignore the amount of comebacks that a QB has?
4 - Will the stupidity ever end?

It's all part of this jock worship culture that has been created in part by ESPN. IMO, people cannot wrap their heads around a clearly inferior athlete like Brady is a better QB than a guy like Rodgers.

The issue is differentiating between a QB and a Passer.

Overall, Rogers and Peyton were better passers than Brady. Fine. That's great. You have to admit that both (add Brees and Wilson as well) have a lot of amazing throws - all four can come up with a wow moment every week.

Brady, however, did far more with less, elevated everyone around him, ignored stats for results - all those other things that make a passer a great QB.

100% correct. Guys like the ones you mention (and I would like to add Mahomes to that group) make these unbelievably athletic plays that make for great TV and even better ESPN highlights. Tune in for 30 seconds and see an amazing play week in and week out. Meanwhile, Brady's greatness happens over the course of a drive, a quarter, a game, a season or even multiple season. His play doesn't make you go "wow" until it's game over and he wins. Again. To be honest, I can't recall a single play where I thought Brady is an unbelievable athlete. There's drives, comebacks, games and seasons where he amazes. But there's already lots of plays that Mahomes makes where you go "oooooooooooooh".

You literally said "Not sure I understand all the Rodgers hate on here..." so I was giving you some insight on why a large number of people dislike the guy.

There's a couple of categories that influence me in judging a QB. One is the media's fawning over the player and the other is the poor attitude of the player. Rodgers fits in both.

Yes, I get it that Brady has outperformed Montana and Young combined. In fact, he has outperformed every single NFL franchise in the Super Bowl era (except the Patriots themselves) so that point really isn’t in question.

But you spoke about the moment Montana left the 49ers for the Chiefs as being analogous to Brady leaving the Pats for the Bucs. The analogy suffers due to the fact that the 49ers actually had a very talented backup waiting in the wings. The fact that Brady outperformed Montana/Young is irrelevant to that point.

I think Brett Favre's legacy might be that he changed the position...causing the league to shun the big, strong-armed, gunslinging interception machines from the 1990s and focus on a physically competent, cerebral type of QB. We had our own Favre in Bledsoe, who unfortunately was even less mobile and didn't have Favre's ups to make up for the downs.

We had our own Favre in Bledsoe, who unfortunately was even less mobile and didn't have Favre's ups to make up for the downs.

The video quality is bad because it's stuff from the late 2000s.

Favre came up short in big moments, but he did lead his team to 2 super bowl appearances and 3 NFC championship games on two different teams. Rodgers only took his team to 1 super bowl. I would take Favre in his PRIME over Rodgers for sure.

I'm actually a big Brett Favre fan (the Packers have been my 'NFC team' for some time). I would love to agree with you on this point but unfortunately I can't. As much as I love Brett, he (just like Tony Romo) was more likely to throw an interception on a potential-winning drive than a TD.

Edit: Sorry, I must concede I read the question as who you would want in last minute drive, but that is clearly not what he said. As for big game, ok, I could see it. Still debatable, but much better argument. Favre certainly was a lot of fun to watch.
