Predicting a football game is not a matter of logic.
Arguing that a player will be good simply because the coach kept him on the roster (which you did) logically means that every player key on the roster would therefore be good. Which we know is not true.
Unfortunately you react emotionally to logical arguments.

Ok, I’m moving on. In your quote you said BB drafted him and has had him on the game day roster all season long. My point was the game day roster means nothing. He has to be as he is the only back up QB. It only means Stidham is close to Hoyer for less money and Hoyer was not that good. And in ‘09 and ‘10 Hoyer was the lone backup. In 12 Ryan Mallet was the lone backup etc. it’s more likely roster management than a belief Stidham is a viable option next year.

In my opinion, we can move on from some of the aging defensive players (or tag and trade - if everyone else in the league can do it, I wish we would too!) but keep Brady and retool the offense. The defense is young and can adapt. The offense can't really evolve beyond the pieces it's given (as we saw this year). Move Van Noy, we have plenty of young linebackers that we drafted with 3rd, 4th rounders. Even Hightower might not be necessary right now with Bentley behind him.

Our group of CBs is the key position group on this defense. With them the best in the league and locked up, we have leeway to mess around elsewhere. Harmon, Chung, and even Brooks can pick up the slack for McCourty and we've already been experimenting with others playing safety, such as Jones. I have no concerns over that area. The pass rush is dependent on our secondary. Our guys rarely win 1 on 1 like the premier pass rushers in the league do - it's often stunts up front, coverage sacks, and blitzes. Do we really need expensive pass rush specialists in our linebacker and DL core such as Hightower to do that? - could be something to move on from. The defense was already the oldest this year so it's something that needs to be a tough call situation.

Keep Brady - his physical skills haven't yet declined, just his decision making has been a bit off. Hopefully it improves in playoffs. OL has been good for 2nd half of season and the running game improved with it. Andrews back and Wynn improving will be big deals. The big area of emphasis is TE - and the FA class is perfect for TE. I'd honestly prefer to go two competent TEs over a big splash like Hooper or Henry. Ebron is young and could be on sale and we would need a second guy to play in front of Izzo next year.

WRs aren't too bad on paper. Edelman was great this year when considering the entire season. N'Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers should have extra juice. Those three by themselves aren't a bad trio of WRs - really it's been the complete lack of a TE that doesn't open up any space. Sanu has been a good WR2/WR3 his entire career and I see no reason to start believing that he won't get over his drops problem.

This isn't a rebuilding year going into next season. It's just a transition. Our team is really old and we have all the young pieces in place (DL we have our 3rd and 4th rounders we drafted 2-3 years ago in Wise, Rivers, etc. for example). But for me, the defense is the area to take from, because there is MORE young talent stuck in backup positions compared to the offense, and since the cornerbacks are locked in.

When asked about QB Jacoby Brissett, Ballard said, “the jury is still out.” He later added, “Right now, I’ll say Jacoby is our starting quarterback.” Ballard also suggested the passing game needed to improve. Brissett began the season well but struggled down the stretch as the Colts lost seven of their last nine games. Brissett finished as the QB23 for the season.

• great release & NFL accuracy
• prolific FCS passer
• undersized
• played in a simplistic offense
• pocket awareness needed work

Jarrett Stidham:

• 3rd-4th round prospect
• great arm & NFL accuracy
• protects the ball (48 TD 13 INT ratio)
• mobile
• undersized
• pocket presence a mess junior year

Posting since there is some hindsight analysis that Garoppolo was a great prospect & Stidham some late round flier. There difference isn’t that notable as the pats slightly reached on Garoppolo & Stidham fell to them.

Stidham was my 3rd QB in the draft. If he came out in 2017 he was projected a late 1st-2nd round pick ( Auburn's Jarrett Stidham Is NFL Draft's Early Favorite for QB1). He returned to school & Auburn’s OL was horrible. He developed bad habits that would need awhile in the NFL to correct.

Who knows if he will be able to play. However, he was a legit NFL prospect who had a great camp & preseason. He threw an INT after picking his nose on the bench. That should override his progress this offseason?

I don't think there's anyone that wishes we kept Brissett. He didn't seem to fit the offense (fast, precision passing) at all...

Nobody is "sure" until he actually does it and proves himself.

The issue with all this is that the decision on Brady has to be made long, long before anyone can evaluate how much of a "jump" Stidham has made into year 2. I don't think you can just go on projections with the most important position on your team.

Granted we don't know how Stidham looks in practice as of right now and maybe he has already made a substantial jump from where he was in September.

No matter from which angle you approach the QB situation you will either have to make a leap of faith either about Brady or about Stidham. Guess it just depends what makes you feel more comfortable.
