Why should a team pay ~$30M more than it needs to by signing a player in his 4th year?
This is the benefit of drafting well - you're supposed to get good performance from a 1st round player for 4 years.
There is no reason to sign a longterm deal this year. Sure, it sucks for Gonzo, or any player who is a top 10 at their position while still on a rookie deal. But, if he wants to sit out to force a top 2 or 3 contract, then so be it. He's making $4.8M this year.
Prove you're a top 5 CB, stay healthy - and you'll get a HUGE deal with massive GTD.
???
Why would next year be any different. He is signed for 2027 for $18M and he could be franchised for 2028 for the average of the top 5 CB's (not the highest). Even in 2029, he could be franchiosed agains ansd still not be the highest paid defensive player, probably not even highest paid corner.

Waiting doesn't change the situation for Gonzalez.

Over 30 but under 50 per year for sure. If they can get him to sign for a non bank breaking contract, I think we will be on the verge of Juggernaught status with all the other goodies we now have. And it makes me moist and I am loving it......

Assuming that Gonzo Inc. is unreasonable there is always the option of going the Chiefs/McDuffie route trading Gonzo and reloading @ CB in the 2027 draft. Premise being getting back to square 1 with an all pro CB in a affordable 3 year window. Gonzo is great and Id hate to see him leave, but the Pats were looking for a CB when they found him.

The end game is Super Bowl Championship and there are lots of moving parts. I do not see the Pats going back to California this coming February even with Gonzo.

Just sayin.
Gonzo was taken with pick # 17 in the 2023 draft. One pick after Emmanuel Forbes, who is not an all-pro CB. Seems likely that to be sure of getting an all pro CB would require trading up into the top third of the first round. That won’t be cheap, and is not a sure thing. It’s an easy internet prescription, but may not be as realistic as we would hope.

Just curious, there was a big contingent of folks who think a 2028 first round pick for AJB was a massive overpay.

If Gonzo could fetch 2 first rounders plus save 35-40 million against the cap where is your head on that?
My head is wanting whatever fed that valuation. It’s got to be stronger than THC,

Any team that trades for him then has to sign him.

You think signing him at his asking price is a bad idea, but some other team will pay two firsts for the privilege of doing it?

LOL.

I mean, the compensation makes sense in a trade, it's what the Colts gave up for Gardner, who is not as good of a CB as Gonzalez is - although the point about Gardner already being under contract is a fair one.

I just don't know why you'd want to trade arguably your best defensive player, and while he's only 24, and under contract for at least two more years. Pay that man his money, he's earned it. The market is what it is.

Trent McDuffie was taken @ 21 who is now the highest paid CB in the league.

For beginners, I dont expect the Pats to be drafting in the 30's in 2027. I see a much tougher season ahead and the possibility of no playoffs. Gonzo not willing to budge could also be a factor in the final win tally. Scenario being that there is a team will a SB shot this season, but they lack pass defense. NE trades Gonzo prior to the trade deadline for a 2027 1st and change.

Now, NE has 2 - 1st round picks in what is rumored to be a deep draft.

I agree that dumping Gonzo will have us drafting much higher.

I disagree that taking that big step back is moving in the right direction.

I got the impression that the trade for Sauce was a surprise in large part because it was viewed as overpaying for him. I certainly thought the Colts overpaid by a lot.

And he wasn’t on an expiring contract, as you acknowledged.

I think a good question, one that’s likely to be considered in pricing the next big CB trade, is how the trade for Sauce paid off?
