Jeff Howe: Pats in market for a WR and TE

Starting to like the Hooper idea that other posters have stated. The Falcons are 1-4 with -8 million in cap space next year needing to rebuild the defense. He’s just 24 and a top 5-10 receiving TE in the NFL. He’d fit as a chain mover type too.

A half season rental won’t be too expensive trade comp wise. If it went great you could try to re-sign him anyway.The cap hit would just be over 1 mil too. Go Cardinals

I'm in the Hooper camp as well.

If we can't upgrade the WR position then the TE position needs to be (ideally both).

Been reading about him and the skinny is his run & pass blocking have improved considerably.

If Falcons lose him they will most likely get a mid round tender.

Maybe a conditional 4th gets it done. If we re-sign him it becomes a 3rd?

I would love:

OJ Howard and Chris Godwin are the best options IMO. TB will trade both? Probably not ... i would give them a #1 #2 and #3 for them and a #2 in 2021. Both young, cheap, signed for next year, with huge upside.

Other Options:

WR Corey Davis
WR Kenny Golladay
TE Mike Gesicki

1. Zero chance that either Godwin or Golladay are available. They are both developing into stars and their cap numbers are both under 1 million for next year. Can we try to stick to realistic options? This is just dumb.

2. Gesicki sucks.

3. Davis has potential to break out when given a better quarterback situation but they do not need potential right now. They need an established veteran who has the possibility to step in and contribute right away. Can never rule out something coming out of left field with BB but these are by far the most likely options:?

Keenan Allen....never thought about him until the 98.5 caller threw him into the mix. If SD loses this weekend, they may be willing to deal him for a 1 or a 2 + 4. He would be perfect for this offense. He has an injury history but I was surprised to see that he is still only 27 years old.

Can we also STOP dismissing these options because of lack of salary cap space. It’s so annoying. They currently have $3.7 million in cap space. At most the prorated space needed in order to acquire one of the above would be less than 8 million, I believe. That is achievable without much difficulty.

Though, Hooper is not a very good blocker, which we would need for the RUN game (we have no FBs!)...

Internally, the Patriots have sounded hopeful they could pry away Stefon Diggs from the Vikings, though that still has the appearance of an overly lofty goal. Diggs just signed a five-year, $72 million contract extension through 2024 and is one of the most talented players on a 3-2 team only two years removed from the NFC Championship game. There’s even been speculation coach Mike Zimmer could be on the hot seat without a playoff push, so it’d be a hard sell to weaken his roster in order to boost future draft capital, potentially for a future regime.

At least publicly, Diggs has played nice since voicing his frustrations last week over the Vikings’ lack of winning. But that won’t prevent teams like the Patriots from calling — over and over again. When sharks smell blood in the water, they show their teeth.

Diggs would almost certainly command a first-round pick. Since his game suits the Patriots better than Brandin Cooks’ style a couple seasons ago, the Pats may very well be willing to surrender one for his services, as they did for Cooks. But the Patriots also may not be the only ones willing to pay that price, and their first-round picks tend to reside in the 30s. If a fringe playoff team offers a first-rounder that could fall in the Nos. 16-24 range, the Patriots would likely have to at least counter by adding a third-rounder.

Sanu is clearly an upgrade to Meyers. And if a WR is injured, we would Meyers as the backup to be made active for the next game.

Eh, I don’t know. I’d be pretty happy to get an experienced, physical presence like Sanu for the right price.

This will be the 4th season in a row (he’s already halfway there, through 5 games) where he has 60+ catches, and that’s in an offense with Julio Jones and a first round draft pick in Calvin Ridley.

Richards is irrelevant unless Watson is a top defensive STer.

If Watson were considered better than Izzo or LeCosse, he would have been activated.

The third possibility is that LeCosse injured himself again and needs to be put on IR. If that is the case, Watson (even now) will be considered, along with other possibilities.

this makes cutting ben watson make even less sense. guy caught 46 passes last year. yet Bill tells me he doesnt have a roster spot while carrying jordan richards and scouring the market for a tight end.

Keenan Allen’s salary is terrific considering his production. He’s a steal at his current number IMO. Chargers ain’t trading him, but boy; would that be a coup

A lot of pats fans /media people recently talking about Mohamed Sanu....not a fan of this guy and wouldn’t even remotely be a difference maker here....look at his numbers......

Sanu has always been an odd choice, to me, though there are years where he'd have been an interesting and helpful addition. He's pretty much exactly what they don't need now,, though, yet they've wanted him for years and it wouldn't shock me to see the team looking into his availability. But this 2019 Patriots team needs a WR who's at least one of two things:

1. Pure slot Wr of the Patriots variety (Troy, Wes, Edelman when he's inside)
2. Deep speed with height

and Sanu isn't either of those.

I agree that Sanu isn't the perfect addition. However, he would be a clear upgrade to Meyers, and likely not a huge expense to acquire.

Also, Sanu's contract goes through 2020, giving us Edelman, Sanu, Harry and Meyers as a start for 2020 (hopefully plus a re-signed Dorsett).

Sanu has always been an odd choice, to me, though there are years where he'd have been an interesting and helpful addition. The Watson situation baffles me too. Unless he has nothing left or if they find a better available TE I still think there's a possibility that he returns because, imo, a solid TE is the highest priority.

I hear you. I just don't think upgrading Meyers a/k/a/ an improvement at the Gaffney position is what's needed. What they need, if they're not going to have AB (just saying, not trying to stir that pot) at WR is either a second deep threat to help Dorsett, or a second true slot to take the pressure off of Edelman.

In other words, they don't have a Brandin Cooks and they don't have a Danny Amendola. They need one of those guys. Sanu seems much more like a consolation prize kind of option.

Yeah I agree but left the door open in case BB wanted to do a little window shopping before committing to Watson. But it seems you're correct.
