A thought that keeps entering my mind as training camp progresses....

If the Captain ends up being correct about both Dawson and Williams, I will never, ever forgive Belichick.

And you shouldn't. The track record of 2nd DBs is downright horrendous.

My surprise cuts are Burkhead, Allen, and (somewhat surprise) Berrios

Burkhead would be a surprise while Allen would not.
Yeah, Burkhead can be also used in the slot and ST's. He's made himself useful....when healthy.

Just curious, does the Picker keep track of how many people choose each player? Like "Braxton Berrios has been chosen on 34% or rosters"? That'd be useful.

DEFENSE
1) Brooks has a fine contract and will make the team. I don't know whether this will be in place of Ebner or ObiWan. I suspect that Ebner will be put on PUP or will retire.

OFFENSE
2) We will have at least one more TE in the 53. As you say the first one doesn't count. readiness will decide whether we need both Kendricks and Anderson (or even another acquisition).

3) You forgot OG Froholdt; presumably Cajuste will be on the PUP list.

4) I'm fine with Karras a the Game Day backup at center and guard (or Froholdt). There is no need for Ferentz. I would keep Burkhead with this saved roster spot.

5) You waffle on Ebner, both on the 53 and one of the key players cut.

Here's mine so far:

QB (3) T.Brady, B.Hoyer, J.Stidham
RB (5) S.Michel, J.White, D.Harris, J.Develin, B.Bolden

CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Williams, J.Jones, J.Jackson
SS (3) P.Chung, O.Melifonwu, N.Ebner

- Ben Watson is suspended...so add one more TE.

- Josh Gordon is suspended...so cut one more WR later.

- Cameron Meredith is on PUP...maybe cut one more WR later.

- Have 9 OL-men..not sure about Yodny Cajuste being available this season. Also, not sure we will keep Dan Skipper..if all OT's get healthy.

Offense (22)

QB (2) T. Brady, J. Stidham

ST (5) S. Gostkowski, J. Bailey, J. Cardona, M. Slater, B. King

Notes:
Offense is a bit light, but all the quality depth is on the defense

QB - Cutting/ trading Hoyer not only frees up a roster spot at a position of depth, but it also gives Stidham the backup snaps instead of primarily running the scout team. With limited practice time, I would rather invest those snaps in Stidham.

WR - If Edelman is ready for Week 1, this is a good mix of veterans and younger guys.

TE - No depth here, but Watson comes back after Week 4. Not sure if there's anyone else deserving of a roster spot.

CB - 7 is a lot, but there is precedent for it (Williams essentially replaces Rowe from last year). Included Dawson for now, but he's my 53rd player. It would be difficult to part with a second round pick from a year ago, but a lot has changed in the secondary since then.

S - Melifonwu added as a developmental player at an aging position.

Inactive (6)
B. Watson (Suspended)
J. Gordon (Suspended)
N. Ebner (PUP)
D. Thomas (PUP) - I wonder when he'll be ready to play. His salary seems a bit too high to just stash and re-sign for next year ($1.5m cap hit if he spends the season on PUP then IR), but I couldn't find if there's any injury split to reduce this. My understanding is that he can be kept on regular season PUP for up to eleven weeks and then practice for three weeks before he needs to be either activated or sent to IR.
C. Meredith (PUP) - Seems like a stash for next year.
Y. Cajuste (NFI) - It was reported he'd be ready to go by start of training camp. At this point, I have to assume there was a setback and he'll be redshirted.

Posted a new one :).

I posted one a few weeks ago that's nearly identical to this one; the only real change from the preseason game is I've replaced Stephen Anderson with Ryan Izzo for blocking specialist purposes.

QB (3): 12 Brady, 2 Hoyer, 4 Stidham
RB (6): 26 Michel, 28 White, 34 Burkhead, 37 Harris, 38 Bolden, 46 Develin
WR (5): 13 Dorsett, 16 Meyers, 82 Harris, 8 Harry, 14 Berrios
TE (3): 83 LaCosse, 81 Kendricks, 85 Izzo
OL (8): 72 Skipper, 62 Thuney, 60 Andrews, 69 Mason, 61 Cannon, 76 Wynn, 75 Karras, 64 Froholdt
DL (5): 77 Bennett, 93 Guy, 98 Pennel, 71 Shelton, 70 Butler
EDGE (4): 91 Wise, 55 Simon, 95 Rivers, 50 Winovich
LB (5): 54 Hightower, 8 Collins, 53 Van Noy, 51 Bentley, 52 Roberts
CB (5): 24 Gilmore, 30 McCourty, 31 Jones, 27 Jackson, 33 Williams
S (4): 32 McCourty, 23 Chung, 21 Harmon, 25 Brooks
ST (5): 3 Gostkowski, 7 Bailey, 49 Cardona, 18 Slater, 36 King
PUP/NFI/Susp (8): 1 Meredith, 10 Gordon, 11 Edelman, 43 Ebner, 47 Webster, 65 Cajuste, 84 Watson, 88 Thomas

  • The best case for QB is Hoyer miraculously plays himself into having trade value while Stidham continues to look at least roughly on his level.
  • The moment Edelman becomes a full participant, I'm replacing Berrios with him. It sure would be nice for WR reinforcements to slowly trickle in over the season (Meredith, Gordon, Thomas specifically). That way, the offense can figure out how to live without them if and when it happens again.
  • On the note of PUP/NFI, I expect Edelman and Ebner to return by week 1 and be on the 53. Not sure what Cajuste's deal is but his spot is safe once healthy. We should ideally have 9 OL, not 8, but keeping 8 now ensures Cajuste that spot.
  • Not sure what the deal with Pennel is but I'm not changing my projections based on recent speculation about him quite yet.
  • I wonder if Wise has the lowest upside of all those edge players. Note that I consider Bennett (and Calhoun, who was close to making this projection) DL because they slide inside to DT more often than they stand up as OLBs.
  • I was starting to worry about Bentley having a quiet camp after the injury but he looked like his old self (coincidentally last seen in Detroit 2018) on Thursday.
  • I don't even know if I'd want Dawson on the practice squad at this point. I would definitely want to keep Crossen on the PS, if not find room on the 53.
  • Obi is a tough cut but our top 3 safeties are ironmen and Brooks looks capable with the added ST ace factor making him a lock regardless of what we do with Obi.
  • Positions we could trade away: RB, EDGE, LB, CB (specifically Jones)
  • Positions we could trade for: WR, TE, T, DL, S
I know we've only seen one preseason game that was out of control from the start, but it's hard not to feel like this team is as complete + healthy in August as it's been in years (knock on wood).

I'm even less confident than usual in this one, but here goes:

QB (3) T.Brady, B.Hoyer, J.Stidham
RB (6) S.Michel, J.Develin, J.White, D.Harris, B.Bolden, R.Burkhead
WR (6) J.Edelman, N.Harry, J.Meyers, P.Dorsett, M.Harris, M.Slater
TE (2) R.Izzo, M.LaCosse
C (1) D.Andrews
G (4) S.Mason, J.Thuney, T.Karras, H.Froholdt
T (4) M.Cannon, I.Wynn, D.Skipper
DE (4) M.Bennett, D.Wise, C.Winovich, J.Simon
DT (4) L.Guy, M.Pennel, A.Butler, D.Shelton
ILB(2) J.Bentley, E.Roberts
OLB(3) D.Hightower, K.VanNoy, J.Collins
CB (6) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Williams, J.Jones, D.Dawson, J.Jackson
SS (2) P.Chung, N.Ebner
FS (3) D.McCourty, T.Brooks, D.Harmon

Crossen was one of my last cuts, I think he'll make it somewhere (and maybe here over Brooks), but with 11 spots already taken up by the secondary I went WR and RB instead (with Meyers and Burkhead being the last guys I put in). I'm assuming that Demaryius starts on PUP, as well as Meredith, with Watson suspended and Izzo keeping his roster spot warm. and maybe Meredith as well, which is part of why I like the idea of Meyers on the roster. Gives him a chance to prove he belongs, and isn't just a Chris Harper-style preseason stud. I think there's a real chance he establishes himself, but if he can't there are midseason vets coming in to take his snaps.

I left Derek Rivers out, and I'm betting that'll be an unpopular result, but I figure that by year 3 a guy who belongs on a roster will demonstrate it rather than banking on unrealized potential. Sucks that he missed his entire first season and all, but unless he shows a lot this preseason I just don't see why you'd keep him over the other end of the roster guys.
