BB almost always makes room for Bolden, though I get your take.

Agree here, I think BB was sorry he let Bolden leave for the Dolphins last time. He's one of the better gunners on the team and has a lot of roster flexibility.

Also not sure they're committing to an UDFA RB who knocks Dion Lewis out of the top spot for smallest guy in the NFL. Place that guy on the PS if he looks good.

Hey cool. I made this tool many years ago - glad to see people are still using it. Let me know if you want any improvements. I feel like the first initial in the name is unnecessary? Maybe add salary cap info?

Yeah it's been very handy over the years...thank you. IMO the first initial should stay...some last names are very common.

If you ever do decide to make improvements, a healthy-scratch feature might be interesting. [Starting this year, game day rosters are 47, or 48 if you activate 8 OLs.]

ETA: You might also consider having an "ST player" section where people can place Slater, Bolden, et al., if they choose.

YES, I strongly agree that there should be a ST section for players like Slater, Bolden, King, Davis and Bethel. They are clearly different from the specialists: kicker, punter and long-snapper.

The defense is short at least a couple of players. The offense has uneeded PS players. Plus, Bolden will make the 53.

Who are the uneeded PS players? Where is the defense short players? BTW I am of the belief that Onwenu will play more NT then G...so there is a defensive player.

OK, please indicate when we last had a 20 man defense. Your effort is a fine one. So, I will deal with the substance, one group at a time.

DEFENSE (22)
DE (3) J.Simon, D.Wise, A.Jennings (IMO they need Wise this season as he is the only traditional DE here)
DT (4) L.Guy, A.Butler, B.Allen (Allen makes it, Cowart doesn't, Murray to PS. my hope is Onwenu also has snaps here) [We need a 4th; Cowart was Bill's choice last year; I don't see a change]; I will have Onwenu as my player 53, a utility player]
ILB(2) D.Hightower, J.Bentley
OLB(3) C.Winovich, J.Uche, B.Copeland
CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Jones, J.Jackson, J.Williams
FS (2) D.McCourty, A.Phillips
SS (3) P.Chung, K.Dugger (Brooks didn't make it, Williams will take snaps here
[Bill likes Brooks; he'll stay. After all, Chung and the McCourty's may be gone after the season.]

BOTTOM LINE
1) I'm fine with your 20 positional players.
2) I've added a DT (Cowart as of now) and a S (Brooks as of now).
3) I'll consider the social teamers in a separate thread: Muluia, King and Bethel.

SPECIALISTS AND SPECIAL TEAMERS (8)
SPEC (3) Rohrwasser, Bailey, Cardona
ST (5) Slater, Bolden, Bethel, King, Davis (Bill will have at least this many)

Many posters will want to cut the number of special teams to 1 or 2, or perhaps even as many as 4.
Few will want to carry as many as Bill ends up carrying.

I suspect that we will carry an addition STer instead of the 24th player on Offense, but clearly 24 give us more flexibility in this exercise.

OFFENSE (24) [I have Bolden and Slater in the STers]
QB (2) J.Stidham, B.Hoyer (no 3rd QB on the 53...the other 2 go to PS)
RB (5) S.Michel, J.White, R.Burkhead, D.Harris, D.Vitale
WR (5) J.Edelman, N.Harry, M.Sanu, J.Meyers, D.Byrd
[We need only 4 WR's; considering injuries and age, I'm fine with 4; Hastings to the PS]
[Please check the number of receptions for #5 WR's over the years; very, very low]
[If healthy, Lee might win a position; I prefer the PUP list]

TE (3) D.Asiasi, D.Keene [we need a backup, likely to be LeCosse]
C (1) D.Andrews [Froholdt is our backup, and perhaps future starter at center]
G (5) S.Mason, J.Thuney, Froholdt, Eluemunor [also backs up at OT], Onwenu
T (3) I.Wynn, M.Cannon, Cajuste, (Herron to PS)
[Cunningham is unlikely to make the 53]

BOTTOM LINE
1) I added special teamer Bolden [Bill saw how much he added when he came back]
2) I added OT/OG Eluemunor.
3) I'm not sure that Woodard will even make the PS over Ferentz or someone else. Froholdt could probably start at center for Game One if needed. He has highly drafted as a center as well as a guard.
4) Johnson and Hastings are fine on the 53, especially with the new rules.

I might have too many DBs in there. One of Bethel, Phillips, and Brooks might not make the team, but Cassh Maluia could make it instead. I'm leaning towards Brooks being on the outside looking in.

  • An UDFA has made the roster for 15+ years in a row. Thomas is the most talented on the roster. He'll compete with Byrd for the burner role.
  • LaCosse vet TE. If they had cap Walker would be an upgrade.
  • OL when healthy is a top 5 unit. Not a lot of experience among the backups though.
3-4 defense

SS (3) P.Chung, A.Phillips, T.Brooks
FS (2) D.McCourty, K.Dugger
  • I don't see the role for Wise in the defense. He was abysmal in the playoffs as 3-4 DE. He's a situational pass rusher & they have players there.
  • Copeland was underrated with the Jets in 2018 as a 3-4 OLB. He's my pick for surprise bargain signing.
  • Similar to past years, some ILBs (Hightower, Uche) can play OLB & some OLBs can play ILB (Copeland, Jennings).
ST (7) J.Rohrwasser, J.Bailey, J.Cardona, M. Slater, B. Bolden, B. King, J. Bethel

4) Johnson and Hastings are fine on the 53, especially with the new rules.

1. I'm one of those that believes that ST only players should be few and far between. I don't have a problem with Slater or King and maybe one other but I prefer those positions be replaced by rookies or younger players that also have roles on defense or offense (Slater if a HOF player on ST IMO...so I am not diminishing his contributions.) SO that's one of the reasons for no Bolden. Don't get me wrong I love the guy. 5-6 years ago I was one of the few on this site that praised his abilities (and shot down for it) and pushed for him to be in the regular RB rotation. I think the Pats are making a push (intentional or not) to get younger as every team should. 30 year old only ST player Bolden is starting to age a bit.

2. I have 7 WR's including Slater because of the unknowns at the position. Hastings will be valuable to Stidham because of there familiarity. I have always agreed with you in regards to the number of receptions WR 5 and WR 6 get....it's not much at all. However Stidham is going to need all the options he can get and I think they will also try to keep Hastings on the 53 because he will be snatched up from the PS.

3. I would much rather have Vitale / Johnson as a TE backup then LaCosse and you save a spot.

4. I picked Cunningham for his NFL experience (even though its limited) and didn't want all the backups on the OL to be rookies or 2nd year players with zero experience. It's been my belief that Eluemanuer is a better G then T. I'm not sure he played any T last season but I could be wrong. I think it's better to have a T play T then a G play T and weaken that position. I do agree that Fro is a backup center (along with G) and could possibly be the starter one day.

2. I have Onwenu helping at NT / DT as I mentioned....not Cowart. So he is your 4th. It's possible this doesn't happen at all....we shall see.

The biggest change I would suggest would be to use DL, EDGE, and LB for front 7 positions instead of DT, DE, OLB, ILB.

So you would want:
DT+DE -> DL
OLB -> EDGE

Or:
DT-> DL
OLB+DE -> EDGE

Or is it a player-by-player distinction? One nice feature of the current setup is that it matches the official Patriots depth chart so there's no subjectivity and it's harder to miss players, as well as giving the added benefit of keeping the sections smaller in the UI.

My first attempt:

QB (2) J.Stidham, B.Hoyer

RB (6) J.White, S.Michel, D.Harris, R.Burkhead, D.Vitale, B.Bolden
- Bolden > Yakob Yohnson.

WR (5) J.Edelman, M.Sanu, N.Harry, J.Meyers, D.Byrd
- It's Byrd vs Jeff Thomas for WR #5/Returner...

TE (2) D.Asiasi, D.Keene
- The rest = Suck.

C (2) D.Andrews, H.Froholdt
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, J.Eluemenor
T (4) I.Wynn, M.Cannon, Y.Cajuste, K.Cunningham
- Billy paid for ElManure & Cunnyham; he might as well use them...OneMenu to the PS until they figure out what to do with him...

DE (4) C.Winovich, D.Wise, S.Calhoun, N.Coe
DT (4) L.Guy, B.Cowart, B.Allen, A.Butler
- Nick Coe could be a starter at DE (with Wino) by season's end...DT after Guy is pretty bad...

ILB (3) D.Hightower, A.Jennings, DJ.Harris
OLB (3) J.Simon, J.Uche, D.Rivers
- Harris is a better ILB prospect than either 5th-rounders, JaWrong Bentley or Straight cassh for maLola, homie...Really hoping that Derek Rivers has some good luck for a change...

CB (5) S.Gilmore, J.McCourty, J.Jones, J.Jackson, J.Williams

SS (3) P.Chung, A.Phillips, K.Dugger
FS (3) D.McCourty, C.Davis, J.Bethel
- Neither Davis nor Bethel are pure Free Safeties, but neither also is Terry Brooks, who Just Plain Feckin Sucks...as does Both Brandons, King and Copeland (as soon as he had to stop juicing)...

ST (4) J.Rohrwasser, J.Bailey, J.Cardona, Slater

Practice Squad candidates:
QB Brian Lewerke; RB JJ Taylor; TE Ryan Izzo; WRs Jeff Thomas & Gunner; OLmen OneMenu, Najee Toran & Justin Herron; DE Tashawn Bower (if eligible); LBs Bentley (if eligible), Lola & Terez Hall; CBs Pipkins (if eligible), Bryant & Ross; FS Adarius Pickett & SS Malik Gant.

I have both Wise & Winovich listed as DEs, though they are different physically and have different roles, but as long as I can list them with the defense then I'm good...My only suggestion would be listing Slater with the Specialists, because he is Absolutely, Positively NOT a WR...
