Top 10 head coaches in NFL: Bill Belichick still reigns, but who fills out the rest of the list?

Not that I necessarily disagree with (most of) their list, though I’d never put Reid over Carroll... It just struck me that not only is BB the best coach, it isn’t even close. If THIS is the best the league has to offer, it makes sense to use this article as exhibit A to tell our grandchildren why the Patriots kept winning so much.

I’m sure that running an NFL franchise is very difficult, but I can’t believe half of the names here would even be considered in other generations. I found it astonishing.

As much as I hate him, John Harbaugh is the clear #2. Dude has never had a great QB and still is in playoff contention every year, and the Ravens are a really tough out in the playoffs due to his game planning. Every other guy near the top of the list has a perennial pro bowl QB. Last year I would have put Reid there, but I’ve seen the Reid thing too many times now. His poor big game decisions/clock management are just part of his fabric, even though he’s a heck of a coach. Belichick, Harbaugh, Reid, in that order. No one else stands out to me.

As a younger fan, I've always thought it was weird that Pete Carroll was the coach here before BB. Seems even weirder that he's good now.

You mean the guy who doesn’t read the rulebook?

Everyone on the list that hasn’t won a Super Bowl are rated too high.

Carroll would’ve been a good coach but their drafting was their downfall. Also, they couldn’t replace Curtis Martin which exposed Bledsoe and the O-line who were aging. For the younger Pats fans, they tried to trade up for Edgerrin James in ‘99, Jamal Anderson and then Priest Holmes before he blew up in KC.

Their defense was also really old in the front 7 with McGinest always injured. It seemed as though every one of their draft picks were flushed down the toilet.

He was big time for USC and they were considered our pro football team out here in LA. The players during that time were celebrities like Leinart and Bush. It was a crazy time.

First impression, there a lot of bad coaches if a guy like Colts HC Reich is #7 after just 1 year.

Who is more valuable to the Patriots TB or BB will be as much debated as the chicken or the egg.

Add to that, Buffalo’s coach... imagine.

It’s Brady. You could be the best coach with the best schemes, but you’re ineffective if your players stink.

BB was 5-13 before Brady took over and started this dynasty. Brady has always been the driving force behind their success.

The dolt who said he’ll never play for a tie despite being in a position where a tie was easily a favorable outcome.

In fact, that decision cost them the divisional title. Had they taken the tie, both the Colts and Texans finish 10-5-1 with the Colts winning the H to H tiebreaker.

What a total idiot.

Yes but having a great Hall of Fame QB doesn't mean 6 titles ask Indy or GB.

Was the writer running out of column space. As the list wound down, the write up for numbers 3,2, and 1 became shorter.....

yep. What simply can be said that a bad coach and a great QB have a higher ceiling than a great coach and bad QB in most cases. In this case however the bad coach wouldn't be called a bad coach because of the great QB. Fangio is a great, great coach. Will be interesting how his reputation will be if Flacco stinks.

They took a pay cut when they got to the NFL.........

Belichick is allowed to get away with a lot of roster moves, and he is brilliant enough to exploit this. They don’t usually spend high picks or high money on offense, whereas GMs for Manning, Rodgers, etc. spend their first rounders on skill position and use lot of cap space to re-sign those guys. Belichick capitalizes on Brady’s greatness by allocating resources better. He knows he doesn’t need two $14M WRs for Brady to succeed. Their offense is filled with late round draft picks and bargain players. Their defense is where all the blue chips and most bigger free agent signings are.
