What happened to Schiano at Tennessee was disgusting.

Do we believe that it is because of the great independence and skill of defensive coaches like Patricia and Flores?

Belichick needed a skilled coach to run his defense. He chose Schiano. I'm as fine with this as I was with the choice of Flores. We can trust Bill to choose coaches.

Bill has a tremendous amount of respect for Schiano. This is not like plugging a bunch of first year coaches together and hoping something good happens.

Harmon knows him, the McCourtys know him. We have considerable secondary talent that came to us from his system. Schiano knows his stuff, I am sure Bill knows his coaching style and will put things in place to make sure the transition will be a good one.

Schiano will essentially be the defensive playcaller for the BB defense and might give some input during the draft season since he has seen some players much more up close than most scouts on the Pats.

But that's about it.

@supafly can give more input but OSU CBs usually seem to be in the face of WRs near the LOS. I’d assume our press man scheme would continue.

I’m not really sure what to think of Schiano, aside from the fact that he takes a disciplined approach and has previous head coaching experience.

BB liked how Schiano was preparing his players at Rutgers to the point where they became a farm for us and essentially all of them were a success in the NFL. JMac, DMac, Ryan, Harmon..

That is really all I need to know in terms of his teaching/coaching abilities. Will he be a good defensive playcaller ? Who knows.. at least he already had HC experience in the NFL.

Could you elaborate on this thought? Are you suggesting that they often started with bad field position? It couldn’t have been that bad considering the fact that they went 13-1, and just barely missed out on another playoff appearance.

I’m thinking that the poorer play on defense was due to less ball control/quicker scoring via a lethal passing attack and less of a ground game, coupled with the loss of Nick Bosa, who is expected by many to be the top overall pick in the draft.
