Greg Schiano to be named DC

If Schiano is indeed coming to the Pats, will he be given the DC title right away, or wait like Patricia and Flores did?
Patricia and Flores were internal promotions up the ranks who had no experience being DCs anywhere else. Belichick was having them earn their job before being named to it, likely with BB doing more behind the scenes than he would with a fully experienced DC. Schiano does have experience as a DC and as a HC, so I'd expect he would actually receive the title if in fact that is going to be his role (rather than Defensive Assistant or something like that when Dom Capers was here).

Not that I think McCourty was going to retire in the first place, your point is well taken. There seems to be a real bond between Schianno and the McCourty's,

BTW- The REAL question becomes whether JASON comes back. IF you look at the roster we have a plethora of young CB's on the roster. With Jones and Jackson developing so rapidly and Dawson looming in the wings, do the Pats really need to resign Jason next year.

In fact that entire secondary seems like log, with Chung, DMac, Harmon, and Obi already entrenched at the S position, who exactly are the Pats going to use those 12 picks on. If need was the only factor it looks like we should have 4 for the DL, 4 WR/TE's, 3 LB's and a QB. ;)

Spend a high pick on a safety for sure.

These guys are all living on borrowed time.

I was actually advocating a trade-up for Derwin James this year.

Did James play any deep safety? Not sure if I ever saw him play that, seen him play as that STAR linebacker

UGGGH

Someone please give me info that exonerates Schiano from Penn state. Something.

Since you asked: the only indication that Schiano ever had any knowledge of Sandusky's behavior was a comment in a deposition from one coach that he thought he remembered another guy years before saying once that Schiano told him he saw something. The other guy, and Schiano, insist this third-hand memory was in error, and no investigation has substantiated any part of it. Here's a statement from an investigating trustee:

Penn State trustee: 'Greg Schiano had nothing to do with the Sandusky scandal'

I think I read that they played Jonathan Jones at safety a little bit. I wonder if he can serve as a depth piece at both spots...

Gilmore is the #1 obviously and I think you can count Jackson as the #2. After that you’ve got Jones/Dawson/Crossen. I would like to keep a McCourty with that group too but I can see why he/they wouldn’t.

That’s a fair point too. I think Harmon has a lot of time left but McCourty and Chung not so much, and I think the jury is still out on Obi.

@supafly can give more input but OSU CBs usually seem to be in the face of WRs near the LOS. I’d assume our press man scheme would continue.
Forget OSU. Look at Schiano's pro experience/exposure.

Look who Schiano learned under.

1996-1997- Dave Wannstedt (mentored by Jimmy Johnson)
1999-2000- Butch Davis (mentored by Jimmy Johnson)

Schiano is a 4 man front, man to-man, blitzing, attacking coach.

BB has changed his scheme to be a lot more like Jimmy's.

I don't see anything changing.

more often that not his defenses at OSU were stout.
2016 gave up 15.5 ppg (very good)
2017 gave up 19 ppg (OK)
2018 gave up 25.5 ppg (pretty bad for D stocked with 4-star & 5-star talent)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Wait, wait -- didn't Ben Volin assure us just last week that Bret Bielema was going to be named DC??? Say it ain't so! If I can't trust Volin, who can I trust???
sorry messed this up
God, I hope this is not a step in the wrong direction for our defense.
Let's not trust BB. Clearly he can't identify players or coaches and is completely disorganized. If you want to wallow in the Schiano negativity , go listen to beatle and Johnson,

One thing remember is where the defence started too. As you can have all the talent in the world, but if your starting on your own 30 you will end up conceding more points than you would if they started on their own 30

I am quite comfortable that Bill isn't going to employ an idiot. Bill seems to know this defence thing.

And yes, I miss B-Flo

well at least gives the fan and media something to complain about :-D

I didn't say it WILL be a step in the wrong direction. I said I 'hope it's not'. Learn to read.
