I think CP is closer to what Hernandez was than Benjamin could ever be. Swiss army knife that can play h-back, pure RB, line up as WR (with a limited route tree), good blocker in the run game.

In 2018 he has been targeted 62 times and has 23 receptions, grand total of 354 yards... will take a flyer on this guy.

Compare to Edelman's 69 targets and 49 receptions in fewer games..

No thanks, Kalvin barely has a 30% catch rate.

Hernandez could block. Not well at first but he was at least willing, and by the end he was a decent enough blocker. Benjamin doesn't have that skillset and he's not about to learn it either.

The only reason I would want Benjamin is to provide another big target in the red zone to help the offense down on that end of the field. As you said, his blocking sucks. Plus he’d have to learn a new position and a new playbook and he wouldn’t exactly come cheap. The negatives outweigh the positives.

In theory Dwayne Allen should be a good, big red zone target. He was with the Colts. Don't know what happened.

I feel like he was never able to gain Brady's confidence, and the few times he was given opportunities were shaky. Brady seems to gel with certain guys reasonably fast (Gronk, Edelman, Hogan (last year), now Gordon) but if he loses confidence in you, you won't get the ball. Brady is very accurate and does a great job of trying to place balls for his guys to succeed and YAC it up. If he has confidence in you, he'll even take some risks and allow you to make a play. It seems he and Allen never developed that chemistry, so the Patriots have decided to utilize Allen at what he's best at in THIS offense: blocking.

Doesn’t hurt that he gets virtually zero separation when he DOES run routes. Brady won’t throw it to him in that case. Same reason Gronk’s stats have gone down this season when he’s been active.

The issue is probably blocking and of course effort. If he isn't willing to do anything extra, whether it be warm ups or after practice, he won't make it here.

If he's even running routes. Allen runs a route on about two thirds of pass plays in which he's on the field. Gronk and Hollister are over 80%. That's the lowest percentage of any tight end in the league with a meaningful number of snaps. So more than any other tight end in the league, he's effectively serving as a third tackle.

The Dorsett situation is interesting. When hes been in there, hes been reasonably productive. He also showed that he knows how to sit in an open part in a zone.

He's not one with a great catch percentage, but this year's 37% catch percentage, that Triumph is pounding the table about, is far lower than his career norm, and runs counter to his prior trending. Last year he was at 61.5%, he was at 53.4% the year prior, and he was at 50.3% as a rookie.
