Apparently Patriots "sources" felt they could've won 5 superbowls with any other top 15 QB cause Brady a system QB

This is the kind of line that I think comes from a throwaway thought, filtered through a game of telephone. Someone says something like, "Belichick and his staff is good enough that they COULD win a Super Bowl with any of the top 15 QB's. Maybe not multiple, and certainly not FIVE, but he's still a SB winning coach so long as he doesn't have a dumpster fire at QB."

Then the person who hears that relays it to someone else as: "Belichick thinks he can win a Super Bowl without Tom Brady." Okay, BB wasn't the one who said it, but still not outrageous.

This gets relayed to the author as, "Belichick thinks he could have matched his success with any top 15 QB." Whoa now...

Then it gets WRITTEN as, "Belichick thinks he could have won 5 Superbowls with any top 15 QB, BECAUSE Brady isn't actually that good."

This was an example, I don't have any reason to believe this is exactly how it happened, but it's more plausible to me than thinking the Patriots actually had that mindset.

@ArchAngel007 beat me to it, but ESPN just had Ian O'Conner on the show and he revealed a quote from a Patriots assistant from his book stating that Brady is not as "special" as the media and fans make him out to be. If they were to take any top 15 QB in the league, they'd have similar success. Damien Woody chimed in and told O'Conner that it was disrespectful. O'Conner clarified that it didn't mean they'd win 5 Super Bowls but they'd have success.

He also said the Malcolm Butler benching was a big reason why Brady wanted to retire. But he couldn't because he didn't want to let Robert Kraft and the fans down after he said he'd play until 45 and they traded JAG.

Is this new book published by "The Onion?"

This kind of reporting without naming sources is very dangerous. there is no way for the other party to defend itself. seems like an attempt to drive a wedge in the team.

Not quite. It says Meyer told that to someone, but the someone isn't identified.

Maybe because i am 100 years old, but after so many decades of suck, I am beyond thrilled that the TEAM I ROOT FOR has won 5 Superbowls, and is in the mix every single year. This is beyond my wildest dreams.

Damn right. People forgot how much of a joke the Pats were in the 70's, 80's and most of the 90's. The absolute laughing stock with arguably the worst stadium in the league. I remember thinking how great 10-6 would be and potentially making it is as a wildcard team.

Ian O’Connor is the ABSOLUTE WORST sportswriter in America. He is such a hack. Not just saying this because of the book; I’ve said this for a long time. The guy is the master of the obvious and going along with the kneejerk mainstream opinion about every issue. He’s incredibly shallow, hypocritical and unimaginative. I think he needs another front page ESPN article telling us how Tiger Woods continues to “win” while embarrassingly choking away leads on every Sunday major, as he’s done about five of those in a row.

Now that I know the author, I’m quite sure he didn’t even interview the supposed original sources. This is just a Greatest Hits (or Misses, who really knows or cares since it’s ESPN and not journalism) Of Patriots Clickbait.

I sometimes wonder if these guys take pride in their idiocy. I know of local beat writers that follow teams here in California who post similarly inane stuff. Are they not sports fans, and they think it's hilarious that they 'made it' in the business as an outsider, like a wolf in sheep's clothing?

Problem is , they are human. However inaccurate it maybe , when throwaway statements like "assistant thinks system not brady the key" are made, it can affect how people think.
