With banged up running backs, the Patriots needed Hill more than Bolden.

Ignoring that Hill has been very mediocre in his NFL career, Bolden seems to be more useful than the trash WR they picked up (Darboh, Hansen)

It's a lot more likely that a big ST play, which Bolden can provide, will contribute to a win more than waiver wire WR who likely won't even dress on game day

I am absolutely gutted right now.
I cannot believe it and what's worse we lost him to our Div. Rival.
What a Team player he was,,,,,,all I can say is thankyou Brandon for all your efforts.
Two times World Champion.
So convinced he was coming back.

We needed a wr more than we needed Bolden.
If both wrs work out and contribute it will look genius.
If we tried to resign Bolden after releasing him we didnt play the market right.
He has a better chance to play offensively in Miami and alot of players love south beach.
I wont be shocked they go after Gronk the tail end of his career.
Losing a lockerroom and great team mate like bolden sucks hes a beast on special teams.
Sometimes teams call and players listen.
We are on to Houston.

What exactly was the plan here? Were they trying to sneak somebody onto the PS by cutting them late?

The waiver wire WRs were a desperation move to replenish a depleted WR corps.

Bolden was beaten out for that special teams job. It happens.

No the plan was to cut bolden.
There was no sneaking, they cut him and only kept 52. There was no reason to cut him if they wanted to keep him, they gained nothing by cutting him.

Why did they do it last year?

They didn’t cut to 52 last year. Cutting bolden allowed them to essentially keep 54. I forget who the 54th player turned out to be.
There is no gain in cutting him when it drops you to 52. (And 51 with Izzo to Ir)

Oh was he cut to get somebody to IR?

Finally!

According to Armando Salguero, the Dolphins contacted Bolden as soon as he was cut.
When the Patriots heard this, they tried to re-sign Bolden but were not successful.

Last year, the Pats cut Bolden (temporarily) in order to get another player onto the IR/Eligible to Return list, then brought him back the next day (or day after).

This year, I think the Pats were trying to do the same with Izzo, but they also left an extra roster spot open in case one of their waiver claims for a WR came through. Because two of them came through, they ended up having to send Izzo to IR early, thus ending his season, and there was no room to bring Bolden back immediately.

Since there were multiple reports that Bolden's helmet and gear were still in place in his locker, it seems reasonable to assume that the Pats intended to bring him back at some point this week or next week at the latest.

Apparently, Bolden didn't want to wait.

Last year? As I said I don’t remember.
This year, no.
They cut down to 52, including keeping Izzo who ultimately ended up on IR. There was a spot for bolden if they wanted him.
