How good is Tom Brady? When you can't complete your passes, there's always the old pooch punt play.

Not that new punter Brooks Barnard did poorly, but Brady stole the show in the closing moments of Sunday's snowfest at Gillette Stadium. With two minutes left in this game, played in conditions which were better fit for Frosty the Snowman, the Winter Warlock or the Abominable Snow Monster, and facing fourth and ten at the Miami 37, Brady lined up in a shotgun formation. He took the snap, and plopped a perfect punt which was downed by David Givens at the Dolphin 1. Four plays later, Jarvis Green sacked Jay Fiedler in the end zone for a safety, and the Patriot thrashing of the frozen Fish was complete.

Calling the Fish "frozen" is fitting, but it unfairly describes how well Miami played this game. The Patriots merely played it better, as they have done all along during this nine-game win streak. With neither offense able to get untracked on a cold, snowy and windy evening at Foxborough, the Patriots used a field goal by Adam Vinatieri which sailed literally over an upright, an interception return for a touchdown by Tedy Bruschi, and the aforementioned safety to blank Miami, 12-0. Delirious fans were tossing and flinging snow in the air with regularity following the Bruschi score, as many of the Gillette Stadium seats were buried under two-foot drifts of snow.

The win was huge for the Patriots. It clinched the AFC East title, their second in three years. Combined with Kansas City's 45-27 loss at Denver, the Patriots (11-2) moved into first place in the AFC, and now control their own destiny towards the one seed in the playoffs. If the Patriots and Chiefs both win out, the Patriots would get home field for the playoffs based upon a better conference record.

It was an afternoon where punting, field position and turnovers ruled, and the Patriots reigned supreme in each area. Neither team was able to get a running game going, which proved both the terrific ability of the Patriots to stop the run, as well as the glaring decline in the skills of Antowain Smith. Because of this, both defenses were able to overplay the pass, and the Patriots stood toe to toe with the Dolphins until the breaks came along which decided the contest.

Both teams totaled 21 punts. Brady and Barnard combined for 11 punts, tying a team record. Barnard had only a 36.5 gross punting average, but four of his ten punts were inside the Miami 20, and he shanked only one of his punts, a 26-yarder midway through the third period. In a game like this, Barnard was effective in helping the Patriots pull off the shutout, as the average starting drive position for Miami was their own 27-yard line.

Punting was never more at a premium than this game. Nine of Miami's 15 offensive drives were three-and-outs. Seven of the 15 Patriot offensive drives similarly ended in such futility. Going further, only one of six Dolphin drives in the first half went more than three plays. The Patriots went through a six-of-seven stretch of three-and-outs, and did not achieve a first down in the entire third quarter. And on the eighth drive of that stretch, the Patriots mustered only one play, a 15-yard gain on a pass play by Kevin Faulk before he was blasted by Brock Marion and coughed up the ball. Jay Williams recovered the loose ball for Miami at the New England 45, but the drive ended quickly after only seven yards gained.

Only four times did Miami drive into Patriot territory. Two of those drives ended in turnovers, one of which took place at the Patriot 10. In the third quarter, the Dolphins drove 53 yards to the Patriot 10, their best drive of the game, helped by a freak catch by Oronde Gadsden for 23 yards after Chris Chambers deflected a pass up in the air. On third and three at the Patriot 10, Rodney Harrison came in on a safety blitz and clobbered Fiedler, jarring the ball loose. Richard Seymour would have lumbered for a touchdown had he been able to pick up the loose ball, but he bobbled it and Mike Vrabel eventually fell on it. The Dolphins would never seriously threaten to score again.

Barnard's best punt came with 8:59 left in the final period, which left Miami pinned back at its own 4-yard line. On the first play, Fiedler dropped back and tried to hit Chambers on a quick slant in from the right side. Bruschi cleverly hid behind the onrushing Bobby Hamilton, read Fiedler's eyes, then leapt in the air at the exact instant Fiedler released the quick slant pass. The play went bang-bang, Bruschi snared the laser and rumbled five yards into the end zone. He fell down to his knees, and his happy fans began to throw fistfuls of snow into the air.

Two drives later, Fiedler took over at the Patriot 45. After two incompletions, Fiedler tried to hit Chambers in the right flat for 13 yards. Law stepped in front of Chambers and made the pick. The Patriots took over and held the ball for just under three minutes, forcing the Dolphins to burn their final two timeouts.

Neither Ricky Williams nor Smith were effective at power running. Williams gained 68 yards and was held to 2.7 yards per carry. But Smith averaged only 2.2 yards per carry, and that included a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter which skewed another miserable day for the former Patriot powerhouse. On a day where his power running was never more needed, Smith again showed that this is a position which needs major addressing next year in the draft. As for Williams, credit Ted Washington and the rest of the interior Patriot rushing defense for flat-out brilliant play all game long.

Brady and Fiedler also suffered through miserable days. Brady barely completed more passes than not, but was sacked three times and had a passer rating of 67. Fiedler fared far worse, completing only 13 of 31 passes for 111 yards and two picks. He was sacked five times, and finished with a passer rating of only 25.1. But while Fiedler was harassed all game long by Patriot defenders, Brady was more of a victim of some dropped passes and receivers who simply could not get open.

With trap city on deck next weekend with Jacksonville in town, the Patriots have a clear shot at a number one seed in the conference ahead. The next Patriot win will establish a franchise record for most wins in a season, and the one remaining pure losable game is in two weeks at the Meadowlands. As Charlie Weis tries to figure out how to squeeze more yards out of his feeble offense, Romeo Crennel sits back with pride and begins to figure out how to take Byron Leftwich to school next week.

Meanwhile, the fans may still be frolicking in the snow at Gillette, and may not get home until the gates open for next week's contest. The Dolphins are division contenders "snow" more, and the Patriots are setting their sights on the cold, rarefied air of a possible one seed.

The weather outside may be frightful, but Patriot Nation sure is delightful right now.

Patriots improve to 10-3, three games ahead of Buffalo and Miami in AFC East
Chargers drop to 8-5, two behind Denver in AFC West

The Patriots scored 20 unanswered points to overcome a 14-3 deficit. After losing 26-21 the previous week at Green Bay where Aaron Rodgers threw for 348 yards and the Packers scored on five straight possessions, the New England defense cut the total yardage allowed in less than half (from 478 yards to 216), forccing their opponent to punt eight times (compared to only one at Lambeau), while only allowing one score (the Chargers also scored a defensive TD on a fumble recovery).

Brandon Bolden blocked a punt that set up a 14-yard touchdown from Tom Brady (28-44, 317 yards) to Rob Gronkowski (eight catches for 87 yards) to make it 14-13 at the half. After a third quarter where neither team could generate any offense, Stephen Gostkowski kicked his second field goal of the game, the D forced a three-and-out, and on the first play of the next possession Brady completed a short pass in the middle to Julian Edelman (eight receptions for 141 yards), who took it all the way from there for a 69-yard touchdown.

From there the defense forced another punt, then LeGarrette Blount's five carries on the next drive chewed up more than four minutes off the clock, with San Diego not getting the ball back until only 2:05 remained, and had used all three of their timeouts. Tavon Wilson made tackles on completed passes on 3rd and 4th down to force a turnover on downs, and two kneel downs later the Patriots had won for the eighth time in their last nine games.

On a side note, this was the last-ever game played by the Patriots in San Diego, before their 57-year return to Los Angeles.

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman ended up being the one player who was able to make some key plays in key situations, including a huge play in the fourth quarter that dealt San Diego a knockout blow and ultimately proved to be a back-breaking play that put the game out of reach for the Chargers and propelled New England to a 23-14 win.

Just after taking a 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter, New England's defense was able to force a three-and-out by the Chargers and after the punt the Patriots started the drive at their own 31-yard line.

On their first play from scrimmage Tom Brady found Edelman over the middle for the completion for 15 yards, and the veteran receiver was able to break away from two defenders and took off running 54 more yards and was off and running for the end zone. His 69-yard touchdown reception sent the majority of Patriots fans who invaded the Chargers' stadium into a frenzy, and silenced what little home-field fans were there hoping to see San Diego come away with the victory.

Edelman finished with 141-yards receiving on the night, his first 100-yard performance of the season and the fifth of his career. His 69-yard touchdown was third longest pass play from scrimmage going back to 2012, and he's approaching the 1000-yard mark as he now has 85 catches for 884 yards along with three touchdowns on the season.

The veteran receiver credited the guys around him for helping set up that incredible catch and run.

"Tom (Brady) put us in a play," Edelman told CSNNE.com. "The offensive line held up the play and Tommy put a good ball up there and I did my job to get open, try to catch the ball and do something with it and we were able to make a play.''

Gronk finished Sunday night having been targeted 11-times by Brady against the Chargers, with 8 receptions for 82-yards on a night where every play counted against a tough San Diego defense. That gives him 73 receptions on the season, trailing Julian Edelman who currently has 85.

He has 997 yards receiving, putting him just three yards away from the 1000-yard mark on the year. After his 14-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, the veteran also has 10 touchdowns on the season which set a team record for the Patriots and it's now the most of any player with 10 plus touchdowns in team history as it's the fourth time he's done it, moving him ahead of Randy Moss and Corey Dillon, who each had three.

He's also the first tight end in the NFL to ever record 10 or more touchdown receptions in four separate seasons.

It's been a terrific season for Gronkowski, who after a slow start has settled in and appears to be at the top of his game as he continues marching his way up the NFL record books. Not bad for a player who at just 25-years old still has plenty of football left in front of him.

The Patriots came from eight points down in the fourth quarter to keep pace with Miami (who also won) and catch up to the Jets (who lost) in the AFC East title race.

Seattle took a 21-13 lead late in the third quarter when Seneca Wallace completed a 4-yard pass to Deion Branch. That score had been set up by a short pass to the right from Wallace to Branch, who ran down the field for a gain of 63 yards. On the next drive the Pats drove deep into Seahawks territory, but had to settle for a 27-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal after having a first down on the Seattle 13 yard line.

The Patriots converted three downs on their next possession, including a 13-yard pass from Matt Casssel on 3rd-and-10 to Wes Welker, and then a 25-yard completion to Welker on the next play. Sammy Morris was stopped for no gain on third down at the one yard line, but was successful in a run up the middle on fourth down to give New England the lead with 2:50 to play. The Pats converted the two-point conversion on another pass from Cassel to Welker to make it a three-point lead. Three plays later Brandon Meriweather strip-sacked Wallace, and Richard Seymour recovered the fumble to seal the win.

Patriots improve to 9-5, tied with Miami for first place in AFC East
Jaguars drop to 9-5, one game behind Pittsburgh in AFC Central

This was the third meeting between the two franchises, and first game in Jacksonville. In a week four game the previous year the Patriots won 28-25, and the two met in the playoffs in January, with New England coming out on top 20-6. The Jaguars dominated this game statistically, with one exception: turnovers. Early in the game a Steve Israel strip sack on Mark Brunell was recovered by Willie McGinest, and three plays later Drew Bledsoe (26-35, 234 yards, 2 TD) threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Troy Brown. Later a fumbled kickoff led to one of Adam Vinatieri's four field goals, while the Patriots did not commit any turnovers.

Jacksonville also had a missed field goal, and twice failed to convert onside kicks. The result was that the Patriots were working with short fields, with an average field position on their own 42, whereas Jacksonville's average drive began on the 26. Vincent Brisby had four receptions for 58 yards and Ben Coates had six catches for 54 yards and a TD to help offset an anemic running game (20 carries for 55 yards).

With the victory the Patriots remained tied with Miami at 9-5, moving one game ahead of the 8-6 Jets. For Jacksonville, who got 152 yards receiving from Keenan McCardell on 11 catches, it was their first home loss of the season.

So even though 7-6 Tennessee was also in the mix, this was shaping up as three AFC East rivals playing a game of musical chairs for two playoff berths. But the Pats would be at one big disadvantage — Curtis Martin had a separated right shoulder and would miss the rest of the season.

New England went to Jacksonville. It was a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship Game. Given the Patriots’ less-than-stellar track record against quality opposition, and the absence of Martin, this game has to count as the best one the team played in 1997. Bledsoe went 26/35 for 234 yards and led the way to a 26-20 win.

The Dolphins kept pace, but the Jets lost. So did the Titans. The Patriots had an ironclad lock on the tiebreaker over Parcells’ team. New England was in a good situation.

NFL WEEK 15; Patriots Sharp in Victory
With playoff fever in the air, the New England Patriots took a deep breath and played like the defending A.F.C. champions.

After listening all week to talk that they cannot win big games, the Patriots showed they could with a 26-20 victory yesterday that ended Jacksonville's 13-game home winning streak, dropped Jacksonville into second in the A.F.C. Central and kept the Jaguars from clinching a playoff berth.

The Patriots, meanwhile, kept a share for first in the A.F.C. East, where they hold all the tie breakers.

''Today was a championship effort by a team that was really committed to getting it done,'' Patriot Coach Pete Carroll said. ''The intensity was really obvious.''

The Patriots played without running back Curtis Martin but got a superb performance from Drew Bledsoe, who was 26 of 35. He did not throw an interception for the third straight game. Meanwhile, New England's blitzing defense sacked Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell four times.

Just like in January, when they lost, 20-6, to the Patriots in the A.F.C. championship game, the Jaguars had two early turnovers in falling behind by 13-0 in the first quarter. They never recovered.

''We acted like we didn't know what we were doing out there half of the time,'' tackle Leon Searcy said. ''We played like it was a preseason game.''

The Jaguars now have to go on the road for their last two games, against Buffalo and Oakland, to try to secure a playoff spot. The Jaguars are 2-4 on the road this year.

The Patriots got their asses kicked in this game, as Cincinnati ran over the Pats to the tune of 300 yards rushing and 584 yards of total offense, while sacking Tony Eason six times for a loss of 40 yards. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for New England, and was the only time the Pats were held to fewer than 20 points in the regular season. The lone bright spot in this game was Stanley Morgan gaining 107 yards on five receptions.

Four weeks later Patriot fans would watch Eason get sacked six times again, in a 22-17 divisional round loss at Mile High Stadium that would have been played in Foxborough had the Pats won either this game, or one the following week at Sullivan Stadium against the 49ers.

BENGALS SHOCK PATRIOTS
Cincinnati gained a club-record 584 yards today, shut down the National Football League's highest scoring team and defeated the New England Patriots, 31-7. The loss kept the Patriots from clinching a wild-card playoff berth.

Cincinnati (9-5) got 163 yards rushing from James Brooks and stayed in contention for a spot in the playoffs. New England (10-4) failed in its bid for a team-record eighth consecutive victory.

Boomer Esiason threw for 284 yards and a touchdown, and Stanley Wilson ran for 120 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown, as Cincinnati demolished a defense that was ranked fourth in the N.F.L. before the game.

Brooks also gained 101 yards on 6 receptions and scored on a 56-yard run that made the score 31-7 with 5 minutes 29 seconds to play.

After managing just a 7-0 halftime lead on Larry Kinnebrew's 1-yard run, the Bengals turned a close game into a rout in the final 17 minutes after a controversial call by the replay offical.

With about four minutes left in the third quarter and Cincinnati ahead by 10-0, Robert Jackson of the Bengals ran 63 yards into the end zone after Tony Collins had apparently fumbled. But the replay official, Joe Gardi, ruled that Collins was down before the ball popped loose. The Patriots retained possession and scored two plays later to pull within 10-7.

But Esiason passed 23 yards for a touchdown to Eddie Brown with 1:24 left in the period, and Wilson's touchdown with 9:44 remaining in the game and Brooks's scoring dash completed the rout.

Tony Eason of the Patriots was sacked six times as the Patriots were held below 20 points for the first time this season.

Head Coaches: Chuck Fairbanks, Ken Shipp
QBs: Steve Grogan, Joe Namath
Odds: New England 5½-point home favorites
TV: NBC; Jim Simpson, John Brodie
Clear, cold, 34º, wind 15-20 mph
Referee: **** Jorgenson; Attendance 53,989 (57,539 minus 3,550 no-shows); Time: 2:49
Patriots drop to 3-9, tied with Jete for last in AFC East

There is a reason I did this post in reverse chronological order.
Losing to the Jete is reason #1, especially when Gang Green entered this game with two wins.
The Pats turned the ball over five times, four on Steve Grogan interceptions.
Don Calhoun rushing for 103 yards on 15 carries (6.9 yards per carry) is worth mentioning, but not much else.

Billy Sullivan decided that Mike Holovak had to go after a 4-10 1968 season.
Talk about going out of the frying pan and into the fire, hiring Clive Rush as a replacement.
Ron Sellers did have three receptions for 102 yards in this game, one of eight 100-yard games he had in his career.
