I suppose it would depend on one's opinion of how long they expect Brady to keep playing. Personally, I think we can safely assume 2 more seasons with a shot at a 3rd, but I also think that could change if the Pats win another Super Bowl, too.The tone might have rough but his point is valid. Michel is a one contract proposition and not someone who will help bridge anything past Brady. He has been selected to have an impact NOW (next 2-3 years) while Brady is still here.
Since first round picks often get the 5th year option (we hope), it's possible that Michel could play 2-3 years with Brady and 2-3 years without him. It’s also possible that Belichick may be looking to take advantage of Brady’s cerebral strengths—which may be the best ever—while also expecting some level of decline in arm strength and athletic ability. As we know, it’s not unusual for a QB getting up there in years to start to rely on the running game a bit more than in the past, and I think this may be Darryl’s bottom line.
I don’t know if this message got lost in translation or if he simply worded it poorly, as I don’t really care enough to go back and re-read, but judging from the context, I’m guessing that I’m somewhere in the ballpark as it pertains to what his point was.
