I'd love to know how a DC can take away his strengths when his strengths are a quick draw with excellent accuracy in the short pass. We saw the Jags try ti jam the middle, and Jimmy G just found Kittle or Bourne behind most of the crowd for large gains. And they'd had both a very talented D and plenty of film to go over by that point to try to develop a game plan for him.

When Jimmy G takes a 1-10 team and beats the Jags more convincingly than we did, I think it's fair to speculate that he's gonna be pretty good. I agree about health, but I also do want to point out that the shoulder injury Garoppolo suffered against the Phins in Week 2 last year was pretty fluky, it wasn't a sign of "being injury prone," it was nothing more than a bad fall like can happen to literally anyone.

Yeah but when it comes to "the guy he likes the most" that's like 5 different guys. San Fran's stable of receivers are very easy to underestimate. George Kittle is comparable to Zach Ertz as an offensive tight end, they've got a fullback who's able to be a big part of the receiving game, and they've got 3-4 good receivers including Goodwin who's nearly as good as Edelman in the slot.

Between Kittle, Mack, Juschek, Goodwin, Bourne, and a couple other depth receivers whose names I can't recall off the top of my head, their offensive depth is spectacular, Kittle and Juschek in particular are probably going to be Pro Bowlers at their position if they stay healthy, especially now that they've got a good quarterback throwing to them.

And of course, Garoppolo is good at making his short and intermediate options look good and has stuck his deep throws when they jam the middle. If he does that, it's going to be really hard to come up with a defense that can stop all those weapons at once, consistently.

I think he's not going to continue to win every game he ever plays, so in that sense yes, I expect regression. But the 49ers have themselves a very, very good starting quarterback, and fans here don't do themselves any favors by throwing stones at him just to cover up their disappointment that he's not in our uniform anymore.

I think the so called malaise of the league is badly overblown. They had a few image problems this year. Probably worse than the average due to the kneeling thing and how poorly that played in Middle America but nowhere near the worst they've ever seen. As long as the hits don't keep on coming, they can weather this like they do so many other scandals and issues.

People like to fixate on TV viewership. The fact is that TV viewership has been a smaller chunk of sports team revenue that it had been in decades thanks to new media sources. I know i for one don't have TV, if I take in a game, it's on a livestream. They livestreamed the Superbowl on the NFL.com website, and judging by how waterlogged the servers were, lots of people had their eyeballs there. So yeah, TV revenue is down but they've done a fair job of divorcing themselves from the typical dependence on TV revenue.

I think the NFL is much healthier than the Pundits (especially the TV pundits who definitely have a dog in this fight) want us to believe.

Saying Garrapolo has a lot to prove isn’t “ throwing stones at him” in any way. He’s never faced any adversity (playing through injury, multiple interception game, losing his top weapons). He’s never played in a game with the season on the line. He’s never had to play through an injury. He’s never had defensive coordinators put together game plans to stop him. And he’s never played an entire season. Garrapolo will have show that he can deal with all of these situations and more to prove himself, and that’s just life in the NFL, saying that is reality, not dissing him Garrapolo is a talented young QB who looks like he’s going to be a good player, but acting as if he’s already arrived is just foolish. At this time next year we will have answers to some of these questions, two years from now more answers, and three years from now we will have a great idea of what kind of QB he truly is. It should be interesting, I’m glad he’s in the NFC.

This is actually a great structure for the 49ers. The cap hits and guaranteed money are front-loaded -- at a time they are significantly under the cap, can afford it, and roster isn't fully ready to contend yet (roster bonus hits 2018 cap, signing bonus is spread over the 5 years). If he doesn't work out, can cut him after 2 years with inconsequential dead cap hit. And if he does work out, his cap hits will be relatively low by franchise QB levels that they can afford to pay talent around him (cap hit of around $37M in 2018, $20M in 2019, around $27M thereafter).

Agreed. Cousins is a good play reader. His problem is that he doesn't have the best arm and often gets lured into gambling too much, probably because his teams don't tend to have a lot going for them other than himself.

Put him on a decent club, or even a club with at least a few other promising assets like the Phins or Bills, and he could become dangerous.
