Yikes of course I don't think BB is or was ever lazy maybe when he's relaxing on his boat.
Why would you make a post then questioning why he didn't make a trade instead of just cutting him and getting nothing?

Because its a little perplexing how he lead in waiver claims yet a trade even for a conditional pick wasn't consummated.

You can't involuntarily claim a player off the PS; he could just turn down any offers.
That's not what I was saying - as far as I recall, Foster had told his agent to let teams know he wished to remain with the Patriots, so please don't put in a claim or try to sign him off the PS. If they claimed him then yeah he'd have to report to them, but teams respected that wish, it seems. Dunno if he'll do the same this year, but if they pay him the same way they did last year (basically equal to if he were on the 53) then I think he probably has incentive to keep working in the system until he gets his shot. Many running backs before him have adopted the same approach and had success.

Is there a deadline to designate someone as the "IR to return"?
They have to miss eight weeks, so in order to return for the Super Bowl the latest would be week 12, if my math is correct.

- To be eligible to return a player must have previously been on the 53-man roster at some point that season. For example, Shea McClellin is eligible to return; Derek Rivers, Cyrus Jones and Julian Edelman are not.

- Teams no longer have to designate a player as 'IR to return' like they did in the past. They can now wait to see how the injury rehab is going before making that commitment. (Imagine that, an intelligent rule change by the NFL...)

For example, if a team places three players on IR after creating the initial 53-man roster, they can wait and see how their rehab is going before deciding which two players to return.

- Two players can now return from IR to the 53-man roster. In the past it was only one.

- A player is not eligible to return to the roster for a minimum of eight weeks after he was on IR. He can begin to practice after six weeks.

- Once a player on IR starts practicing, the team must notify the league that they are designating him for return from IR.

- If I recall correctly there is no maximum time that a player can be on IR, and still return (other than time running out because the season is over). For example he could be on IR for ten weeks, practice for two, and then return. [edit: uncertainty on this point]

- There is no limit to the number of players a team can place on IR. However, players on IR still count against the salary cap.

Minnesota thought beavers was lousy. A lousy bum of a 4th round pick.

Unless Blackson is replacing Valentine (with Valentine going to IR), then both are probably on the PS.

No, but there's a minimum amount of time the player would have to spend on IR. So there is a deadline technically since the season might be over.

Interesting.

Blackson, at 6043/318, was a rotational* DE in the Titans (mainly) 3-4 defense for the past two seasons (* approximately the same number of snaps that Valentine had last season). He was occasionally used at NT, too.

So, that gives the Pats at least three players with similar size and skillset/experience to play 3-4 DE. Hmmm ....

He was definitely a lousy 4th-round pick, but as raw material for Dante to mold he's pretty interesting. Came out of a small school last year as a rare physical specimen with lousy technique.

Hopefully its about Hamilton (and Kilgo already gone)
Beavers adds more intrigue on the Fleming front though.. (really hope its about Ferentz but he is G/T..

- The team has to make a decision on the player three weeks after he begins practicing. He must be activated, left on IR for the rest of the season, cut or be traded at that point.

Are you saying the Return from IR is different than the PUP now. So they can decide to activate McClellin for the super bowl? There's no window after 8 weeks where they have to decide whether to permanently leave him on IR?

Factoid:

In the 2015 draft, Blackson was selected at pick #100. Trey Flowers at pick #101.

I think that @jmt57 was ponder how late in the season a player could be PUT on IR and still return in time for the Superbowl. However, you raise an interesting question about how long a team can leave a guy on IR as eligible to return before his eligibility runs out.

Willie Beavers, T, Western Michigan, 5.48 (mm 4) 6040 324, Three-year starter who’s athletic enough to play the left side in the pros. Good burst off the snap, and has the ability to get into space to block screens that the Patriots love. Beavers is just what I’m looking for with the Pats in this draft and he should be available to them if they feel the same.
