Used some of his bonus to pay off Brother's student debts, a couple of other thing he did I was unaware of.

High character person.

Logan Ryan speaks up, pays his brother’s $82,000 in student loans

“Surprised my big bro and paid off his student loans for his 29th Bday!” Ryan wrote. “My man got accepted to college, graduated with honors, and now works as an engineer. He did everything the right way and still lives with a ridiculous amount of student loan debt. The system is broken and makes no sense! I’m Fortunate and blessed to be able to take care of that for him.. Love you big bro you deserve it!”

Ryan, a cornerback who played the last four seasons for the Patriots, also did a good deed recently when he and his wife asked all the guests at their wedding to donate to an animal shelter instead of buying gifts.

Wish him well in Nashville.

Now I was a Logan Ryan supporter. I think the Titans got a quality CB who plays better than his physcal assets would seem to allow. He's smart, instinctive and a very good tackler. Personally I think what the Titans did was get another solid NFL starting CB for about the same money they were paying McCourty, only 3 or 4 years younger. I was very happy he got paid.

All that being said, I'm guessing Logan Ryan made somewhere between 4 and 6 MM or more during his 4 years with the Pats. Not a lot for a for an NFL player who started the better part of 3 years at CB, but in the real world, that's still a lot of money. I'm not surprised that he paid off his big brother's student loans, but I AM surprised it took him this long to do it. $89K is NOT a big chunk of change for someone who has earned as much as Ryan did while with the Pats. I would have thought he would have paid at least half that amount before now. Just sayin'

Maybe he was unaware that the loan amount is so large as to give his brother trouble in paying it off (I've had a student loan, and I always kept the balance private, even from my family members). Maybe he'd offered to pay it off before, but his bro respectfully turned it down. Maybe he was always planning on it, and was just shuffling his own finances before getting to it. Maybe half a dozen other plausible scenarios.

People shouldn't make assumption (let alone pass judgement) on situations unless they're confident that most of the facts are known. Not chastising you on it...this board would probably shut down if we all followed that.

That's a total drive by. You have no idea what the situation is and neither do I.

Just because he's loaded doesn't mean he's under any obligation to provide financial relief to family and friends.

I liked the part where he and his wife sought donations to an animal shelter in lieu of wedding presents.

Was bummed about him going elsewhere... his skills improved so much last season, amazing CB and of recent news, a stand up guy as well.

Haha. My loan was from AES too.

I laughed at the dig in the memo. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't have the lifestyle I have now, or even be the person I am now, if it wasn't for that loan that let me afford my education. The lender gave me something I didn't have but needed (upfront cash), and in return I gave them 9.5 years of interest. Fair deal as far as I'm concerned. If anything, I'm grateful that such a product existed for me to utilize.

If anything, it's a testament to the entire Logan family. No wonder BB used a high draft pick on the kid. Seems well-grounded, mature and intelligent. Something of an enigma in today's professional sports. He earned every bit of it while playing for the Pats.

My company paid for mine, from the start all the way through my MBA. I just had to earn a C or higher and had to serve 5 years in a call center for a living. I honestly sometimes look back on that job (worst I've ever had, by far) and think that my life would have been easier had I chosen to go the student loan route. Half joking, of course.

While I think most college prices are absurd ( have 3 kids and I'm looking at $800k all in), I don't believe in "free" education for everyone. I had student loans but they were nothing by today's standards.

Education should be valued and earned. If people earn scholarships, great but just because you want and education it does not mean you are entitled to one.

What Logan Ryan did for his bro was great. Clearly his brother saw the benefit of college and has a great job as an engineer. Sucks that he had $80k in debt but well, sorry....

ryan made just over $4m with the patriots. after taxes, call it $2.7m. let's say he averaged $100k in living expenses over the four years--that's $2.3m left.

suppose he suffered a career-ending injury during super bowl LI. $2.3m in savings isn't bad for a 26-year-old, but it's nowhere near enough to being secure for the rest of your life where you can just give away $82k to a relative. note, he also has a wife and a 2-year-old daughter that he has to think about first. and his brother has a paying job, so it's not like he needed the financial help.

while it would have been a really nice gesture on his part, it would have been financially irresponsible for ryan to pay off his brother's loan before he got his big contract.

Its actually an interesting discussion. Your 800k number sounds like top end private schools? If you think about state schools, more like 30k/yr (not trying to get an exact number, since there are no salary cap implications ;-)) or even trade school/apprentice programs, probably less...

So is it worth it to society to educate people who have the drive to go to school and maintain that C average, regardless of who their parents are? I think even a hard hearted number cruncher might add it all up and say yes. I recently read a piece on the California prison system. It costs the state pretty much the same to hold an inmate for a year as it would to send them to college. Which is really a better investment? (Yes, a bit of a devils advocate there .;-) Feel free to add in paid mandatory service to get a little more value out.
