But the value that could have been received for JG is a crap shoot. All probability is that at least half of the guys picked yesterday will bust for one reason or another (can someone say injury?). Seems BB wanted to stay with the safer bet.

I'm guessing sometime in the near future, JG signs an extension, say 3 yrs, $30 MM with $10MM SB. Essentially gives him similar money to being tagged in 2018 plus money up front in exchange for delaying free agency by two years. Spreads some of the cap hit into this year where the Pats can afford it. And there is no guarantee that JG will get top of the market money should he become a FA next year. JG swaps the uncertainty of FA, Pats keep their man for 3 more years to see how TB fares. Win, Win for everyone

Butler is not on BB's **** list. He's an RFA, and BB is just leveraging the team's rights. Butler is getting exactly what he deserves, exactly what the CBA says he's entitled to. It's his own fault for developing expectations of getting a free agent payday when he's not a free agent.
He's definitely getting what the CBA entitles, but he's definitely not getting what he deserves.

A big factor in determining (most of the time) the quality of a QB is the level of competition he faces.

I think if you look at the 2016 Red Raider schedule and then look at the 2013 Eastern Ill schedule you will have your answer.
So how do you explain Wentz?

I would love McMillan in the 3rd. Like thuney last year I think he's a plug and play starter day 1

I still can't believe how much Mitchell friggin Trubisky cost in draft capital. Goff/Wentz & now Trubisky have proven that we got lucky three years ago with Jimmy G IMO.

Granted he was my binky at the time, Garoppolo had elite college production (55 TDs senior year), arguably the best release entering the NFL, accuracy, enough arm & size, mobility and good field vision. Somehow this profile equated to a rd 2-3 projection.

Flash forward to present day and Eastern Illinois Jimmy G was a better prospect than Wentz or Trubisky. The QB desperation has gotten so out of hand.

That's probably part of the reason the team doesn't want to trade him either. Getting that caliber of a QB that late probably won't happen again. I like Mahomes but he went top 10 as a Texas Tech project!
I wish I could rate this post higher
This is 100 percent true look at the teams throw away assets on anyone who is remotely capable of throwing a football.
Patriots see this know what they have in Grap so BB is thinking ok I trade this guy for two picks unless I'm fortunate enough to get a top 5 pick In a trade only Arguably better QB prospect coming out is Sam Darnold and I really think the Browns would trade their next 5 drafts for him.
BB is no Fool Tom is the goat no doubt keeps himself in amazing shape loves the game but is 40.
BB doesn't want to strap the franchise to a maybe we can get a QB scenario God bless him for that.

I agree.

The Browns are being VERY smart managing their assets.

What we don't know is if they will have a good team but at least they are accumulating draft capital and cap space to give themselves a fighting chance.

The problem is it takes time for all that young talent to jell/succeed as a team. By time they do (assuming the Browns hit on every pick which is not a given and especially by time whatever QB they get becomes adequate) they will be faced with the same problem the Pats recently had, namely too many top players entering free agency at the same time. It will be difficult for them to keep the team together. A mixture of youth and experience (for example JG) would be a better path.

There is no exact science to this.

6-5 240 rocket arm. Tore up FCS. Kicked ass at the combine.

Same thing applies to guys like Culpepper, Steve McNair, Romo, Carr, Roethlisberger, Pennington, etc....

Some guys are so good they just do enough to get noticed and in combines, all-star games, bowl games, etc they just shine

I had to laugh at the 'highlight' video of Mahomes, which consisted of him running around on broken plays and throwing off his back foot into triple coverage.

You are right but I think they are in "core player" building mode right now and in time I bet you'll see vets sprinkled in their program.

My question as well. Wentz was a less successful FCS passer on a loaded team with a mess of a release:

He was taller and a better athlete but nearly every other QB trait I'd give to Jimmy G (Had Garoppolo 10th in 2014, Wentz mid 40s in 2016).

Yup. Some great tools but is one heck of a project. The best QBs the big 12 has produced this century are Bradford & Tannehill....those defenses are high school caliber.

You know damn well the browns will find a way to screw this up. They have fallen in love with loading up on picks. They better hope they get a QB that will be any good. I am not in love with their coach either.

Yep. That goes to the dreaded upside question. Physically Wentz is a gift from the gods.

The question can he maintain his mechanics, composure and throw a ball 30 yards downfield to the spot the size of a small bucket on a 3rd and 11 in the 4th qtr of a playoff game with someone ready to destroy him after he releases the ball.
