Not exactly a "back up". He played over 50% of the defensive snaps last season, and his skill set allows Matty P to be more flexible with his defensive schemes. Because he can man the deep safety role, Patricia can use McCourty and Chung in a variety of ways that he might not be able to if Richardson or Ebner where his only options, since they both are more Chung type back ups than McCourty. He also used a lot of 3 safety setsSeems like an overpay for a backup safety, but I guess this is going to be the new normal.
Also I'm patient enough to wait for the full contract info to happen. I doubt in the end it will end up being a true $5MM/yr deal, though I'm sure he'll get close to 8-10MM guaranteed. The back end will likely be like most these deals, easily cancellable. The $20MM talk is there to enhance the agent's stature. You'd think we'd learn by now.
This makes me REALLY want to see Malcolm back, even if its just for a year. But what a year it would be for this secondary.
