Safety Duron Harmon Re-Signed to 4-year, $20 mil deal

Seems like an overpay for a backup safety, but I guess this is going to be the new normal.
Not exactly a "back up". He played over 50% of the defensive snaps last season, and his skill set allows Matty P to be more flexible with his defensive schemes. Because he can man the deep safety role, Patricia can use McCourty and Chung in a variety of ways that he might not be able to if Richardson or Ebner where his only options, since they both are more Chung type back ups than McCourty. He also used a lot of 3 safety sets

Also I'm patient enough to wait for the full contract info to happen. I doubt in the end it will end up being a true $5MM/yr deal, though I'm sure he'll get close to 8-10MM guaranteed. The back end will likely be like most these deals, easily cancellable. The $20MM talk is there to enhance the agent's stature. You'd think we'd learn by now.

This makes me REALLY want to see Malcolm back, even if its just for a year. But what a year it would be for this secondary.

He's the backup at safety, and the Patriots play a fair amount of 3 safety sets. That's just the reality. I'm not sure why this is an issue for people, as it wasn't meant as an insult. As I noted, this appears to be the new normal.

Vastly overpaid for a JAG. Makes as much sense as overdrafting him in the first place. Hard to believe anyone was bidding for him.

That's an overpay for his current role in the team, but if they see him as a starter in the near future--which I think he's talented enough to be--that could became a bargain in a hurry.

I don't expect Malcolm to be any less professional and do his job or behave as Collins was rumored to have acted. However...

I think with that lessoned learned and playing the same position as a guy who just got $40m guaranteed and he is making much less after two ProBowl seasons with the team that gave you a shot, I can completely understand how he might have a bit of a problem with BB.

At the end of the day Malcolm is an asset and has a ton of value and is under the Patriots control.

Such is life.

I'd be willing to bet he's demanding significantly more than what Gilmore got. If Belichick could've extended Butler for the same price, I think he would have by now.

Nobody who plays over 50% over a season is in reality a backup.
Especially with every “starter“ at the position fully healthy.
He is a rotational player that is used a lot (similar to DE rotation)

The new contract pays that and possible increase
and (that is true) insurance for Harmon.

At the end it doesn't matter.
He is on the field a lot and deserves the money.

But don't you dare ask Bill if Harmon is a backup..

Jordan Richards is officially a bust BTW. Being forced to give Harmon that much money when Richards was drafted to avoid that.

He's the nickel safety, the S3, the backup. It is what it is, and it's apparently the new normal, because it's not likely that they'd have paid him what they did if they were planning on changing the system.

Pretty sure that's not why Richards was drafted. They are very different players with very different skillsets.

None of that to say that he doesn't suck, which he sure seems to, but this contract isn't really evidence of it.

He's not a backup because we often play 3 Safeties. He's a backup AND 3rd safety.

Think of it this way, neither of the "starting" safeties missed any real time but Harmon played 50% of the snaps. That is a part time starter not a backup.

By that logic

Sheard
Long
Flowers
Branch
Ninkovich
Brown
Hightower
Collins (before leaving)/Van Noy (replacing Collins)
McClellin
Butler
McCourty
Harmon
Chung
Ryan
Rowe

were all starters.

Sorry, but you don't have 15 starters on defense in football.

You're the only JAG here you clown.

Since nonsense territory is nearing let's put it in terms that matter
(otherwise we might learn that Pats have no starters etc.)

Harmon played north of 750 snaps in 2016. (similar to Brown)
His playing time increased in the playoffs to 60% on D.
5M is a very good value deal.
