My guess is that this is with an eye towards 2017, and reducing reps for Brady during practices this late in the season.

Not sure that is worth a roster spot though. It's Jimmy g Reps that would be reduced. Not sure what running the scout team will do for 2017. But in BB we trust

Overall we have been fortunate with injuries through the first 14 games and this allows us to put Brissett on the back end of the roster.

He impressed me with his poise in the games he played. I think his throwing can improve. Practicing with the team is important in his development and having a 3rd qb heading into the playoffs is not a bad thing.

It's not like there aren't ways to make room for him. Grissom, Hamilton, Foster could be waived and/or cut and Richards could be put on IR. Several possible ways to make room for Brissett.

Yet we KNOW that BB does nothing by accident, he has a reason for every move he makes. Especially rosters moves like this. So how do we read between the lines?

The impression I get is that

a) Belichick is satisfied with the overall health and depth of our team, and doesn't mind sacrificing a roster spot for a third QB

b) The coaches really like Brissett a lot (he's been travelling with the team even while on IR) and have long-term plans for him as Brady's backup. They probably want to give him as many reps as they can

c) And if b) is true, then the implication is Bill does not mind reducing reps for Jimmy Garappolo, because the Pats don't have any long-term plans for him. Which means he will likely be traded this off-season.

That's what I get from all this....unless anyone else can come up with a better explanation

BB KNOWS right now IF JB can will be better than JG. HE has been watching football for 56 years studying the game and the players. BB KNEW that TB12 was going to be better than DB prior to TB12's second year.

He tapes EVERY rep in camp he STUDIES the mechanics he knows if the player will take the coaching and IF he has the ability to improve those mechanics. He has watched and studied on tape EVERY REP that JG and JB have taken as a professional I am of course including practice reps. He knows what JB needs to do to improve his mechanics he KNOWS the work ethic of each player. HE knows the intangibles of each player at this most crucial spot.

BB know where JG was at this point in his career and knows where JB is. He has a pretty good idea of how much Brady has in the tank. He knows what the market for JG is.

BB will do what is best for the Team both this year and going forward.

Just relax and enjoy the show. The Pats have a great situation here.

The are more than a few NFL teams that don't have one serviceable QB and we are blessed in NE to be discussing trading an asset. What could JG garner in a trade???? Whatever the market will bear.. Suppose it is draft weekend some team looks around and couldn't get their QB during free agent signing time and doesn't like the draft pickings. they may be tempted to overpay like Minnesota did for Bradford....
If you've the movie Draft Day with Costner, there is a scene where it happens like that.... team overpays for a franchise QB or so they thought.....( in the movie).....
I would love to see a bidding war.......Wash, Arizona, Chicago, Cleveland.........SF, Houston ( can they dump Brock?)

I don't think there's enough to say that Jimmy G. wouldn't be able to adjust his mechanics or be open to the kind of coaching that Brady and others received....but of course, if Brissett's strongest attribute is his coachability, toughness, and composure - then that's a damn good start!

Hope he can at least be a solid stop-gap until we find Brady's eventually successor

Yup, so often the discussion seems to take place in a vacuum where the decision is what is it worth for the Pats to give up Jimmy vs what will a team give up, when the calculus needs to include the scarcity of the asset, and the demand for the asset.

Other teams needing QBs are not going to stand around while Cleveland gives up only a #2 plus.

There WILL be competion.

Picture teams coming hat in hand to deal with Belichick trying to pry a potential franchise QB knowing there are other suitors... He'll be sipping his orange juice while somebody whispers into BB's ear and he tells the suitor, " hang on I have a call on another line" and he leaves the room like a car salesman...hoping the team panics/blinks/overpays...and somebody is going to pay a king's ransom.......

hmmmmmm.....Brissett can make pre-snap reads and has a quick-release like Brady? That's definitely not the impression I got from watching him

His intangible are another thing.....we can only go off the word of Parcellls and the coaching staff, and they seem to love the kid.... but his throwing mechanics are not nearly as fundamentally sound as Tom's, and I certainly feel Jimmy has a better release (and a pretty quick one too!)

And Brady's form was not perfected when he was a rookie. He worked with Tom Martinez right up to Martinez' premature death in February 2012- - in fact he had Martinez fly in with an oxygen tank and all when he was dying for emergency lessons.

Let's not pretend Tom Brady showed up in 2000 all perfect on his throwing mechanics. He was dependent on teachers to get it to where it is today PAST Martinez' death in 2012 - - he worked with Tom House for a year or two afterward.

Where Brissett is in his career and his throwing mechanics is pretty good when put in a contemporaneous comparison to #12 in his rookie year.

I'm not arguing the merits of Jacoby over Jimmy.

I think it's just way too early for any of us to know for sure If Jimmy (or Jacoby for that matter) has what it takes to be a long term starter. Not a big enough sample size. Durability is a HUGE factor in the success of any NFL player, way overlooked IMO.

Which is why it is great that we have Brady, no?

Brissett can grow over time on the bench. Nobody is saying to put Brissett in this year.

Jimmy G. is already prepared today. he's ready to rumble and we should get good value for him over the offseason.

Brady playing 2-3 more years is perfect for Brissett's development timetable. If Brissett doesn't pan out, look to a late rounder this offseason to be next in line at #3.

Ok, fair point. No one could've predicted that Brady would be able to re-invent himself as many times as he has - whether it meant adjusting his mechanics, changing his diet and fitness, and adapting to an ever-changing playbook and turnover in personnel, Brady has shown a remarkable ability to transform himself as needed - for himself, his team, and the longevity of his career.

Bill has known him longer than anyone, and if he and coaches see even a glimpse of that in Jacoby, I'll be very impressed No doubt, they love the kid

Garoppolo's mechanics and release were never a a problem, they were/are his strength. What you're referring to in his rookie camp is his mental game, the learning curve processing information at NFL speed at the line of scrimmage. There's a big difference between speed of release and the time it takes to visually/mentally work through progressions deciding where to throw it.

I was at the Buffalo game at the end of 2014. He had happy feet and was seeing ghosts. His best play was the scramble. Thank goodness he doesn't now and seems to have great pocket presence (from the first two games this year).

Brissett seems far ahead of the rookie year Garropolo in terms of pocket presence and field vision. Neither models are within light years of Brady, of course.
