So, a wrist has a whole bunch of tiny bones attached by muscles or ligaments. Is it the bones in the wrist breaking? or would it just be a tear in the ligaments in the wrist?

Those two won't last much longer. The reason why Tom and Peyton were able to play well at a later age is because they were/are great at reading defenses and no coverages inside and out. Brees does to and he's still doing well.
