Mallett may resign with Patriots, as trade is less likely, now.

Why wiould he resign? He will be a FA next year and can go somewhere to try to start.

Nobody is going to end their pursuit of a possible long-term starting QB because of Ryan Fitzpatrick. If they were interested in Mallett before, then they still are now.

I don't think it means anything, Ryan Fitzgerald has proven throughout his cares he is not capable of being a starting QB. If anything his accusation is for security should they draft a young QB or trade for a player like Mallett or Cousins.

Precisely what I was going to say.

And, more aptly, if they weren't they still aren't.

Hey man, don't trash my boy Ryan Fitzgerald! Dude has a ton of upside, and he's gonna be an elite QB by the time hits his sophomore season!

Ryan Fitzpatrick on the other hand? Yeah, I don't think he's scaring anyone.

Two words why he won't, Matt Cassel

I doubt Mallett will be resigning here at all, but what does Matt Cassel have to do with anything?

He just resigned with MIN for 2 more years, and is the favorite to start over Christian Ponder this season.

His deal was for 2 yrs/10 million anyway. That wouldn't have been the kind of "backup" deal that Bill Belichick would have considered. We're not paying our backup QBs 5 million dollars a year.

Three-quarters through the workout, most had seen enough including Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien as Bortles had answered the call. Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner openly said something to the effect, "great - this means he (Bortles) won't be available for us."

You don't pay a QB $5m a year and then turn around and trade away your 2nd or 3rd draft pick. The moment they committed even that relatively low amount of money to Fitzpatrick I think it's clear that the Patriots' asking price was too high.

I think at this point unless some unknown organization panics on draft day or the Patriots lower their asking price Mallett's gonna finish out his contract and move on.

What the signing of Ryan Fitzpatrick means, that its clear that the Texans are going to go with a QB with their first pick. Picking up Fitzpatrick means they'll have a veteran QB who will make the Rookie's entry into the league a lot less stressful. Fitzpatrick has been a decent NFL QB. In Texas he will have more talent surrounding him than he ever had in Buffalo. In BOB he will have better coaching and play in a better system than he ever did in Buffalo. What Fitzpatrick means to Houston is that they won't HAVE to start a rookie at the start of the year. And what it means to NE, is that Ryan Mallett isn't going anywhere.

If you're going with Bortles, you start him from day 1 and allow Fitzpatrick to coach him up during practise with the rest of the coaches.

Fitzpatrick is a good ordinary player. Unless they feel the need to tank, I don't see being any better than Schaub or Keenum given their stage of development.

The Pats were never shopping him. It's absolutely ridiculous to suggest they would. There may we have been interest from teams but the suggestion that the Pats should be shopping him BEFORE they draft/sign someone else they feel can be the #2 is incredibly laughable.

I would personally love us to pick up AJ McCarron and if...that's a big if...he showed the capabilities early on to be TFB's backup, then I would look to showcase Mallet in the Pre-Season and then offer him out to teams.

How often do we see teams fall off the pedestal because they underestimate how difficult it is to find a replacement for their franchise QBs? All too often.

Mallet is the closest thing we have to an heir at the position and we shouldn't be so quick to trade him until we are 100% sure we have a guy who can step in his place.

I just don't get it...why do people on this board think that iut is SO easy to just pluck QBs out of nowhere?!?!

Have consistently questioned the trade value of Mallet.... the dreams of a second round pick, were what they were, dreams...

I wish that this 'player as coach' meme would die. Fitzpatrick is like, 3 years removed from being considered a solid starter in this league and getting a big payday.

While he would be silly to not see the writing on the wall you've got to imagine his focus will be on trying to win the starting job, win games and get one more big contract. Also I'm not convinced that Ryan Fitzpatrick is the guy you want 'coaching up' your #1 draft pick...

It might be fair to question "player as coach" but I think it's reasonable to talk about an experienced veteran being a mentor and someone that can help facilitate a rookies entry into the NFL.

How so? Mallett outside of his arm is a mess. Brutal footwork, slow reads.

This is an assertion, not a fact.

Yeah, ummm because it's SO much smarter to have teams that need QB's spending high picks on QB's before you offer your wares? Your "solution" only works if there is an injury(ies) to starting QB's in camp. So, cut down your opportunities by what > 50% - I take it selling/marketing isn't your forte?

How often do we see teams fall off the pedestal because they underestimate how difficult it is to find a replacement for their franchise QBs? All too often.

How often do casual fans make the mistake of lumping complex and interlocking issues such as an aging team all on the change of a QB?

Mallet is the closest thing we have to an heir at the position and we shouldn't be so quick to trade him until we are 100% sure we have a guy who can step in his place.

This team cannot win the SB if Brady goes down this year, next year, and the year after. Mallett isn't going to do the job neither is a 5th rounder -> UDFA we pick up as a 2nd this year. We need to make sure the OL is in good shape to keep Brady upright. We don't need to fritter away our cap on a second contract on an "heir" that's not the equal of Hoyer or Cassel.

I just don't get it...why do people on this board think that iut is SO easy to just pluck QBs out of nowhere?!?!

Why do you think the designation of "backup QB" means that Mallett is an heir?

As for this move, Houston can still pursue Mallett, but they can decide what's a fair offer and walk away if they don't like it. Take the 65th if offered and run like a thief.

Good call. My bad on the name.

I don't think they were interested in Mallet in the first place. Limited film on him, especially during the regular season in the NFL, may be the biggest problem and the reason why there was never an offer for him.

Now, IMHO, I'm not sold into Mallet. I don't think he's a capable starter in the NFL and, in the long run, not a successor for Brady. We'll be better off drafting a QB this draft(Round 3~4), growing him for a year and let Mallet go rather than giving him the amount for a Back up QB (2~4 M/Y)
