Slow week topic: Does Ras IR's fragility cost another player a roster spot?

BTW in case it's unclear, this Pats homer is for keeping him...subject to his play tomorrow night and against the Giants. Then again Glass IR may miss the Giants game, making this an easy decision.

You are assuming he plays tomorrow night. I won't be surprised if he is hurt already by then, or gets hurt the first two plays of the game.

Speaking of the possibility of Dennard's suspension, what is the NFL waiting for??

Are they waiting for the outcome of his court case?? If so that may take a while, was under the impression that this stuff happened in the early part of the season if it happened off-season...

Marshawn Lynch got a DUI last offseason, the case still hasn't been closed and the NFL has done nothing.

Also Braylon Edwards pleaded guilty to DUI and all the league did was give him a $50k fine.

So I honestly don't expect Dennard to get more than a fine if he is guilty of the DUI.

On the violating probation thing, the fact that Dennard had no probation restrictions on drinking or a curfew and his license, insurance and registration were in good standing and that he is contesting the case. I just don't know how they could rule that he did violate until the DUI case is closed. Now i'm not saying they won't it's just my opinion that I think that's what Dennard's Attorney will argue. That if he is ruled to have violated his probation then their basically saying that he is guilty of the DUI. In other cases I would expect a no jail time punishment to be agreed on but clearly the district attorney's office has a hardon for Dennard

Besides even if they do violate him and there is no jail punishment, I just don't see how the NFL could do anything and if they did it would be 1 game at the most.

The closest and most recent example for the 1 game thing is Kenny Britt last year when they suspended him 1 game for numerous incidents involving the police.

Dowling will not cost anyone a roster spot......if he's healthy enough to play, then he will.....if not, it's back to IR for him unless he is cut, but I believe there are some negative cap ramifications of cutting him

It's cheaper to IR him than cut him, so if he's and deemed to not be worth a roster spot, I assume that that's the direction they'll go in. Not to mention the whole injury settlement issue.

It's a pretty straightforward question (I'm not saying the answer is: just the question), I think, and I won't add too much to the background, in order to keep the table clear of any biases, so to speak. The only thing I will add is that there's also the issue of Dennard getting some type of suspension which you may/may not feel adds to the equation. Having said that.....

Have at it.

Belichick, unlike some of the hasty fans here, won't cut somebody with nobody to take his place. He will bide his time unit he has a possible replacement in mind. What you do in haste you often regret later.

If you cut Ras-I would you be better off re-signing Sergio Moore or Phil Adams? Don't be daft.

Right now our last CB is a hopelessly and proven inept Marquis Cole, who may make it as a ST gunner. In short we have at least one CB hole now and nobody to replace even him. Perhaps after the next draft, and continued ill health.

if it came down to tebow or Ras, I'd rake Ras.

Ras never passed for negative yards in a game.

He cut Sanders and Meriweather leaving Ihedigbo as a starting safety.

I think that is "daft" to think that the #5 position corner would need replacing.

Yeah, they're waiting for the outcome of something--either the VOP case or possibly even the outcome of the DUI case.

The Marshawn Lynch DUI case is a prime example of how one could potentially avoid a suspension until the outcome of the case. He was expected to see a suspension in 2012 and didn't, and now it's looking like he won't see one in 2013 either.

Still no trial date for Marshawn Lynch DUI case | ProFootballTalk

Of course there was not a VOP case either, so that makes it somewhat different.

EDIT: Sorry, did not initially see JMC00's response.

Is it possible that Braylon Edwards' DUI was his first? There usually aren't suspensions handed out for first time DUI's.

Now we're getting into a whole other issue...

The state of Nebraska chose to violate him early/immediately before allowing the process of DUI to play out. They did that for a reason, as most cases are allowed to play out to innocence or guilt first. The fact that they already believe that he's guilty of something is a whole other issue, so saying that "the suspension won't take place until after the resolution of the case" is not even close to correct....or else the state of Nebraska wouldn't even have violated him yet until after the resolution.

If Dennard is found guilty of violation of probation (which he's already been arraigned on as of last month), the NFL may certainly give him a suspension; and that's IF the judge doesn't have him her own punishment where he'd potentially miss games.

In the end the team could choose to hand down a 2 game punishment/suspension, which may be enough for the NFL to live with and not pursue it any further.

Since he had a hip operation (2011) I wonder if he favors it and causes other injuries. In other words, he could play but they'd prefer to have him work it out under supervision so he won't favor it again.

Never see the sense about worrying on these things. If he can't play, they'll cut him, if he can, we'll see what he's got.

Is this a Contract Year for Dowling?

If Glass-IR Dowling does not play against the Detroit Lions tomorrow, it may be time to cut ties. Besides, Dowling provides little to no value on special teams.

He cut Sanders and Meriweather leaving Ihedigbo as a starting safety.

No he had Patrick Chung a 2nd round pick, who failed, and the SS we got from (KC? James Hasty???) who promptly was injured. Only the did he turn to Ihedigbo.

You're probabaly thinking of Brandon McGowan.

As long as the other player is not "you know who" I would be okay with him be let go if they feel he cant contribute .
